Letter from the South African Deaf Squash Association (SADSA)

Date: 3 July 2007

RE: SADSA Form circulation amongst all squash clubs in South Africa

I am writing to you on behalf of the South African Deaf Squash Association (SADSA).

The aim of SADSA is to promote awareness of squash as a sport amongst Deaf or Hard of Hearing players in South Africa. Participation builds character and would be a positive addition to a person’s life.

We request your assistance in circulating the attached form to all Squash Clubs in South Africa. We are trying to establish how many Deaf or Hard of Hearing players exist in every club so that we can sufficiently cater for the needs of these players. We are currently in the process of developing the SADSA structure and knowing how many people we are dealing with will help us to successfully arrange events as well as the next championship and tournaments in each province.

We have recently completed the SADSA annual championships at The Wanderers club in Gauteng. Ronel van Coller (2nd League - Paarl Squash Club, Western Province) and Max Percival (5th League - Crusaders Durban North Squash Club, KwaZulu-Natal), are the two Deaf champions for 2007. The level of squash amongst the deaf players at the tournament was markedly improved compared to previous years. This was due to an influx of new players who had previously never heard of the SADSA before which is a great shame. We wish to avoid such unfortunate occurrences in future by informing all clubs in South Africa of SADSA and where they can contact us.

Your support will help the entire community and will be recognized by the South Africa Deaf Squash Association who is dedicated to helping and developing deaf squash amongst it’s participants.

We greatly appreciate your help in this matter. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Squash is breaking ground

Squash is breaking new ground. Squash goes on the sea. In the future All-Glass-Courts will travel across the ocean on modern cruise ships. ASB and AIDA make it possible. ASB, the company from Bavarian Stein, innovative global market leader in the building of squash courts, brings the fast
game on the high seas.

From now on all squash fans can pursue their hobby squash during their sea voyage in the All-Glass-Court on deck of the AIDAdiva. The latest cruise ship of the AIDA "fleet", the AIDAdiva is now on a voyage after completion and after a breathtaking naming ceremony in Hamburg.

On the uppermost deck, directly behind the huge chimney of the big ship you will find the object that people long for: The absolutely sea-worthy ASB SquashCourt. For the first time it was installed on a cruise ship - on deck, open-air - with a view to the surrounding sports facilities and even a better view on the ocean, the clouds and the landscapes passing by.

The court was newly developed and it is completely made of glass. Even the floor is made of a glass surface, which is mounted on a sprung aluminium base. The floor is antiskid. All fittings and connections are seaworthy. The big panes, made of safety glass, are elastically fixed to a newly developed supporting frame, as on the sea high demands are placed on the material.

The glass floor developed by Horst Babinsky has an elastic substructure with seaworthy aluminium parts. The huge glass floor panes made of a double layer of safety glass are placed onto the sub-frame by rubber parts and this ensures protection of the players' joints. The floor's anti-skid surface guarantees dynamic matches even under moonlight. For squash players it will be a new experience to play all over the world, open-air, at sea on an ASB GlassCourt.

It will soon be four AIDA-cruise ships that will be "decorated" with an ASB GlassCourt. For the second cruise ship, the AIDAbella, the traditional lucky cent was laid under the first of a total of 55 building blocks in the beginning of May. Each of the four AIDA cruise ships is 252 metres long and 32 metres wide and 2050 passengers can be accommodated in 1025 cabins. Four diesel engines produce 50 000 BHP, and the cruiser can reach speeds of up to 22 knots.

Weekly Roundup

Well, the mighty have fallen eventually – the Ladies 4th league SLK convertible and the 7th league Juggernaut both came to a shuddering halt. This leaves only 1 undefeated team at the end of the 1st round, that being the 9th league A team (as all squash connoisseurs will know, this is an amazing performance considering the characters making up this team). COTY nomination to Colin Bullen for dropping both his No 1 and his most consistent player for the same match.

Overall possibly the worst week of the season with only 4 teams winning.

On a more serious note the long awaited for, comeback match between Hagger and Loake was scheduled to take place over the weekend, with most tickets sold out weeks ago. However a serious headache suffered by Loake (following a lemonade or two) led to a 1st postponement until Monday evening and then common-sense led to a 2nd postponement due to a fear of injury in the current cold snap. The two “comeback kids” have asked members to be patient and will give plenty of warning before the next postponement match.

Complaint about the press

"Characters making up" 9th "A" team ? We detect an element of defamation in this statement. Or is it your intention Mr. Chairman to plead truth and public benefit in due course ? ( which may well be sustained, we concede ). Whatever the case, the truth will be told next Wed --- that is to say 18 JULY --- when the local derby of the season takes place. Yes indeed, it's 9th "A" vs. 9th "b" at home in the ice chamber. No fancy under floor heating, only cold beer on offer.
Ticket sales are open via Patricia.
May the Gods help the "b" team. Otherwise they're stuffed.
George
Honorable representative "A" team

12th LEAGUE vs Edenvale

No 1 - Brian. Was vicious in his execution of the eyebrow and ear studded opponent taking a very short time to whack him 3/zip. (9/0; 9/0 and 9/4). We were rather annoyed that he gave the boy four points!

No 2 - Des. Playing (without Sharks beanie but with fleece in first game) as usual in his relaxed and casual mode easily took the fist game 9/4; arsed about in the second - got a fright and then took it 10/8. In true Crossman fashion then got serious and was clinical in taking the third game 9/0.

No 3 - Paddy. Still full of British pork pies and Italian piazza's after his (yet another one) overseas trip, looked like a pork pie on the court and waddled around the court getting in the way. Lost the first game 0/9, took the second 9/1 and then the pies and pizza's bit back and he lost the next two 9/5 each. Played a ladies 1st league import we suspect!

No 4 - Bob. Dear, dear, what a debacle. He came expecting to play squash but ended up playing ping-pong with a very round lady who did very little running and tipped everything into the front corner. Only two rallies beyond serve, return, kill in the entire match. In fact the ball was still ice cold at the end of the five setter! Lost 8/9 in the fifth after calling "one" at 8/8. Points for 34; points against 34!! Very frustrating.

RESULT - WON 11/6

The only real complaint of the evening was the noise from the adjacent court where George Bowen and his merry men were doing battle in a 9th league match

Final result won 11 - 6

10th league vs. Old Eds

After the euphoric wins of the past two weeks it was inevitable that we would come down to earth eventually. Wits University decided it was their night last night and they took us in all four matches. Not that we didn’t put up a fight. Dylan played a marathon to come back from 2 down but was squeezed out 10-8 in the fifth after more than an hour of play. Phil N, playing No.1, felt that the final result (0-3) didn’t reflect the closeness of the game. I didn’t see the game so I can’t comment ….. . Phil P took a 2-1 lead from 1 down before his opponent stepped up a gear and took Phil to the cleaners in the last two games. That left Paul to salvage our dignity in the final match but alas, despite Paul’s hard work, formidable forehand and total commitment, Wits took this one too. Not the result we wanted but ……… watch this space.

  1. Phil N 0-3
  2. Dylan 2-3
  3. Phil P 2-3
  4. Paul 1-3

Match result: 516,

9th League B vs. Suburbs

Unfortunately we had our 2nd loss of the season going down to Southern Suburbs 5-13.

Graham Vermaak lost 1-3 started off well but the match was a long one and Graham faded at the end.

Peter Fillmore won 3-1 a good win.

Peter Le Roux lost 1-3 two weeks at Bali showed.

Digby Chapman lost 0-3 once again had to concede early in the match due to a strained calf muscle

Match result 5-13

9th League A vs. Old Parks

Rain delay, á la Wimbledon causing the team’s late arrival ‘cos of traffic snarl ups and accidents. Mikey, fresh from his knee operation less than 2 weeks ago, enters court 3, sees Kim warming up and exits, obviously wrong court ‘cos it’s Men’s league. Wrong again, it was his opponent and he desired, infatuated and obsessed for the first game, only getting 3 points. The boyfriend, David was ecstatic and spurred on Rourke more than Christine who succumbed to a thrashing; in his dreams. On goes “Correct” George, in a hurry, not wanting to make his flu symptoms (which surely will not survive their beer drowning) worse and only drops 4 points; a fantastic display that lasted 9½ minutes and OK the man was recovering from a broken collar bone! On goes “diver” Paul and retrieves like a dog, and comes back from 2-1 down to win. A successful return and it is recommended that he wears knee and elbow guards to prolong his playing career. Last up Nick and oops, he is in the art gallery waiting for the assistant, however she does not come (!) and Nick plays “a game of note” to claim maximum points for the team. 9A has yet to loose a match and hopes it can be maintained through the second half of the season. We play Chamber 9B away in the next game and hope they field a full strength side this time other wise the assistance of the Australian Rugby board may have to be sort.

Squash Commentary of the Week

To the Lower League Tournament entrants, good luck. And remember play the ball not the man or the woman.

#1: Paul played Trevor 3-2: 7-9, 9-6, 8-10, 9-4, 9-6

#2: Nick played Mike 3-2: 9-10, 5-9, 9-2, 10-8, 9-2

#3: George played Steve 3-0: 9-1, 9-1, 9-2

#4: Michael played Christine 3-1: 3-9, 9-1, 9-3, 9-3

Match score: 16-5

To clarify some of the comments above for those whose brains do not work the same way as the scribe, he is apparently referring to Kim Bassinger in “9½ weeks”- .

8th League v Jeppe

The 8th league boys (top of the logs) went up against Dainfern (haven’t lost this season) this week. When I arrived, Stuart was being finished off by his opponent, 3-0. Not a good start. Then on went Andy. He lost to a girl again. 3-0, although she is a first league ladies player. Still not looking good for us. Then on went Jacques who was unlucky to lose the first two 10-8 and 10-9, won the third and lost the 4th 9-7. A closer game than the 3-1 score line suggests. Then Duncan beat the lady’s husband 3-0. At one point they offered to send on his 12 year old daughter, but I wasn’t having any of it, especially after what happened to Andy. A good evening at Dainfern with a roaring fire and great curry and lasagne. However, we dropped 8 points to our main competitors in this league, so we’ll have to pull out all the stops now.

Match result: 4-12.

7th League vs Bryanston

NEWSFLASH: 'Unsinkable' Titanic hits iceberg

Yup, the unthinkable happened to the unsinkable. 7th league finally experienced defeat - and did we like it, no not one bit! Admittedly it was as a consequence of 'Cookie' Bowes, who crumbled with an injury in the second game of his tie, otherwise it was going to have been a very close evening.

It started badly with 'non-playing' captain Bullen dusting off his squash shoes at 4 and playing like the proverbial donkey. After 2-9 in the first, it looked like one way traffic. I jumped him in the second but he dug deep and won the third 9-7. Then going 1-7 down in the fourth it was all over, right? Nope, Bullen fought back from match point down for a dramatic 10-9 victory. Into the last game and guess what? Yup, 1-7 down again. Again the fight back to 8-8. Match points were exchanged, until finally, Bullen won on a clear stroke! But what? Gavin G, our own team member and marker called it a let? Bowes had even given him the correct call. Sadly, that allowed Gary back in and in the end he nicked it 10-9 with an amazing recovery winner. 2-3. It was only afterwards my opponent told me he had not lost all season...

COTY award for 'crook' Gavin G for stealing victory from his team mate and captain?

Then on went Richard, elevated to one at the behest of the non-playing captain. Another humdinger of a game which could have gone either way and, in the post match analysis (thanks Terry), should perhaps have swung our way. However, it was not to be and for the first time this season we had lost two games in a match. Richard went down 2-3.

But all we needed was for the broad shouldered Gavins to step up to the plate, as they had done all season. Sadly 'Cookie' Bowes, playing two, experienced a calf injury and crumbled in game two after having won a tense first game 10-9. Although he tried to battle on, ultimately he had to concede 1-3 and the match was over. If he'd spent more time warming up and less trying to sell his house (you have to question some people's priorities), it might have been a different story.

Finally Gavin G ('the crook') playing three held the floor in another amazingly close game. As with all other games, the victories alternated, but GG came back from 1-2 down to salvage some pride for the dented egos of 7th league with a 3-2 victory.

If Gavin B had finished, I'm fairly sure it would have 3-2 and we'd have had a points count out...wouldn't that have been fun.

Match result 8-14.

Lessons for markers: If it's a stroke, call a stroke, even if it is match point.

Lessons for captains: Dropping your number one and your top-performing player in the same match might not be a smart move.

Lessons for the team and match reporters: Never get arrogant, Bowen is bound to have some advice...

Lessons for all: Stretch thoroughly before stepping on to the squash court - you could get hurt!

Match result: 8-14.

5th LEAGUE vs Western Rackets 5th LEAGUE vs Western Rackets

Ryan on first – had a long hard match after a few weeks off and finally lost 9-8 in the 5th.

Jeff on next, tired his opponent (Monty) out in the 1st 2 games to win convincingly 3-1

Chris allowed Dimitri to get to 8 first in all the games before starting to play squash. Eventually won in the 5th narrowly avoiding a COTY nomination.

WR couldn’t find a 4th player so the Silver Fox took a walkover and challenged the 4th league captain to a match. (His team had requested he sit out apparently.)

Playing on 2 courts and starting at 6.00pm resulted in a very early evening.

Result 14-6

4th LEAGUE vs Parkview (again)

Herewith match report for 4th against Parkview.

Willem 2-3

Trevor 3-0

Shaun 3-1

Vevek 3-1

Overall result, 14-5

Shaun up first and, after appearing in command first game and winning comfortably 9-3, lost the second game 9-6. He finished well to take the next two games winning the match.

I was up next against the ever confident Mireck and after a well run game and after some “interesting” calls (my opponent dropping his racquet in amazement twice), I won the match with some well timed boasts.

Vevek up next and after losing the first game appearing a bit asleep, he came back well against Dean and won the next three comfortably conceding five points the last three games.

And now to the COTY nomination (unanimous consensus), Willem against Gordon. With Willem running his heart out he appeared dead and buried in the first two games losing to five each game. The third, Willem 0-8 down and he got a second wind and won the next nine points to win 9-8. To the fourth, Willem on form and took it 9-0. Willem served and lost serve and seemed to have run out of steam (his opponent feeling more tired) and despite good support could not manage to win the match and lost the last game 9-1. So despite a valiant effort in winning 17 points in a row from 0-8 and youth on his side, went down. We all felt that this was very deserving of a COTY nomination.

None of their players stayed for dinner so we ended up at Nunos for a well deserved pizza. A very good win for us and we finish the first half very well.

Thanks

Trevor

Match Result: 14-5

Caroline 3 – 2

Claire 1 – 3

Overall result 7-11

Ladies 4th LEAGUE 01 vs Alberton

First match we have lost

Julie won 3-2

Jenny won 3-0

Chrisna lost 0-3

Megan lost 0-3

overall result

6-10

Well nothing really to say, Jenny went on first had a very easy game against their No 2. Then Julie went on lost the first as it was like having a human juggernaut on court, she had no idea where she was running and was out of control most of the time, little bit intimidating, then Julie took the next two 9-0, lost the 4th 5-9 ( out of control running came back, then won the 5th 9-5. Not an easy game. Their no 3 and 4 where certainly better players than their no 2 but then Alberton did get whipped in the 1st round against our other side in 4th League ( pay back time). Chrisna lost her first game 10-8 and then some wheels came off and her normal routine of being 0-2 down and winning 3-2 didn’t come right. Megan Farquhar, Jenny's daughter played at No 4 and did well saying that it was her first ever league match. Well played Megan.

Overall result 6-10

Weekly Roundup

Another excellent week for Chamber with the only side losing being 8th league admittedly with a slightly weakened side but no excuses. Two self-nominated COTY nominations, firstly from Duncan le Grange for losing 3-2 to the guy he beat 3-0 in the first round and losing the overall match because of it. Secondly from Roger Johnson for a dismally poor performance which luckily did not stop a team win.

Let’s try and keep it going this week.

12th LEAGUE vs Edenvale

Played Edenvale B at home on a freezing night.

No1 Brian- Played an immaculate game albeit his opponent was not in tune with the night and logged up an impressive 9/2; 9/2 9/0 win.

No2 Des- As usual Des played the fool in the first game to go down 6/9 against an older guy who Des should have thrashed (COTY nomination?). Got his head right and took the next two games and then his opponent withdrew (hamstring). Win 3/1.

No3 Bob- On top form ran in comfortably 9/2; 9/3 and 9/7.

No4 John- Not up to his usual high standard John worked very hard to throw the last two games where he was up 6/2 and 7/2 only to lose 6/9 and 7/9. (Another COTY nomination?). The first game was also close but went down 8/9.

RESULT - WON 12-4.

11th LEAGUE vs Krugersdorp

11th last week vs Krugersdorp away… sneaked a win by 7 points (no thanks to my own dismal performance!)

Phil Alves won 3-0

Graham Cummins lost 2-3 (10-9 in 5th)

Result won 10-8

Final result won 10 - 8

10th league vs. Old Eds 10th league vs. Old Eds 10th league vs. Old Eds

Despite the slight chill on the courts last night, the scene was set for a fiery match. Our No.1 was out of action and Old Eds are just below us in the log with a game in hand. And how did we respond to our critics? ………... with another spectacular win …. 16-2. Pity about the ‘2’ but in the bigger scheme of things we will forgive Phil N and Paul for using the first game of their matches for warm-up practice. Paul found his form and confidence in the last three games and played his best squash of the season to shatter his opponent. Phil P had a comfortable win (or does he just make it look comfortable?), having decided not to give the first two games away for a change. Dylan and his opponent decided that the evening would be finished far too early unless they played some extended rallies. This tactic played into Dylan’s hands and his speed and guile got the better of his opponent in most of these rallies. Phil N decided to lull his opponent into a false sense of security by giving him the first game 9-2. He then proceeded, as only Phil can, to psychologically destroy his opponent by retrieving each and every winner played, from all four (or was it eight) corners of the court. The result was inevitable, with Phil doing all the running and his opponent left exhausted and beaten. Great win – well done again lads. Will all the 10th League critics please sit down.

  1. Phil N 3-1
  2. Dylan 3-0
  3. Phil P 3-0
  4. Paul 3-1

Match result 16-2.

9th League B vs. Wanderers

"We are marching to ................... no not Pretoria - league champs".

Anyway first up was "our man" Graham Vermaak (GV) - nothing to report - same old, same old - got whipped 0 - 3. GV, the poisonous pen has run out of expletives to use - you have been given a hiding from all and sundry, and sundry includes 'pensioner' Mike Hunt with his walking stick. What next?

Well on at the same time was "ek" - back in the thick of things - but, not quite at my best, after a 'life threatening' injury. The youngster ran me around. I had a chance to take it to the fifth by being up 8 - 3 in the fourth, but ran out of steam and he pipped me 3 - 1. Not bad after being at "death's door".

Well 9B is made of "good strong" material - can't say the same about the poofters from 9A. We are in trouble 1 - 6 down, but never fear when the men are near!!!!!

On next was 'cappy' Pete Fillmore who played a captains innings and whipped his oppo. 3 - 0 - well played Pete - easy game this game.

On at the same time was 'ol toppie 'Big G' - Gavin Martin - man is he old, bent and buckled. But let it be said, not all stupid, as he used 'ol bullet tactics with not much energy being utilised - and dished out a hiding of note 3 - 0. Well done 'ol boy.

So we ended up smashing them 9 - 6.

#1 Graham Vermaak lost 0 - 3

#2 Pete Fillmore won 3 - 0

#3 Digby Chapman lost 1 - 3

#4 Gavin Martin won 3 - 0

Match result 9-6

9th League A vs. Old Parks

Snow on the roof, snow in the car park, snow on the ball, even snow on Des Crossman's head ......was cold in the old ice chamber to be sure.

Vs Old Parks at home last night.

Doc Fallon kicked off first at no 4 and romped home 3 -- 0 in a no contest affair which all in all took maybe 10 minutes. 27 -- 10 to be exact.

I went next at no 3 and this time it only took about 5 minutes to wrap up. 3-- 0 and 27 -- 4. Felt guilty about using the council's hot water in the shower and only did so to ward off the snow.

Mark Van N at no 1 however didn't have it quite so easy. Won the first and then lost sight of the ball in the blizzard and ended up going down 1 -- 3.

Last at # 2 went Bruce B who had the pleasure of entertaining a ladies 1st leaguer. Very good player we observed. But Bruce was having none of it and finished it off without to much difficulty 3 -- 0.

So 13 -- 3 overall and still on a roll.

COTY award goes to Des Crossman playing next door for improving his looks and playing ---- wait for it --- with his beany on his head !!

Cheers

George

7th League vs Parkview

The starship enterprise is in warp speed (no - this not Colin Bullen at the helm - but his 2 IC Captain Bowes reporting from the deck)

With an astounding 103 points out of a possible 112, we were up against Parkview (who are currently at port side - that means second in the league)

1) Flip - 3-2 (tight tight tight - 5-5 in the fifth, with a haircut on board, g-forced to a brilliant win)

2) Phil - 3-0 (not lost a game all season - but arguably his toughest mission)

3) Gavin B - 3-2 (down matchpoint in 4th, but held the ship steady to dock a win)

4) Gavin G - 3-2 (up 2-0, but needed to stretch himself)

5th LEAGUE vs Southern Suburbs

Suburbs are unbeaten so far this season. On Monday night a hopeful SMS was sent out to the team by the captain “See you there to beat the league leaders”

Jeff went on first against a fired-up Boucher. After being drilled in the 1st, baldy dug in and wore Bouch down to win 3-0

The Silver Fox then came up against Creton who didn’t appreciate the cold lob, boast drop game. An easy 3-0 win to the Silver Fox.

An upset was on the cards as Dave went on against Mark. Dave had obviously been watching Trevor too much as every other shot was a boast which Mark read time after time. Dave scraped the 3rd game but was well beaten 3-1.

Chris (CmC) then had to win a game against Kurt for victory. CmC played great squash to frustrate an out-of-sorts Kurt and win 3-0.

Suburbs did have their top 2 players missing (Richard having opted for a night at the theatre rather than a night at the courts!!!!!!!) but hey there’s no comments column on the results sheet. We rubbed it in big-time, but hopefully they still win the league over Jeppe.

The waitresses at Ginos are much prettier than at Nunos – we’re thinking of making it our local (who cares about the distance). Dave drives home via Gold Reef City anyway.

A drive through the snow finished off the evening.

Result 13-4

4th LEAGUE vs Parkview

4th played the first part of 2 Parkview sides this week.

Parkview brought a disorganized side, they didn’t know the players names or numbers…..

Willem won 3-1 against a hard hitting Fritz. Willem cramped up in the 3rd but managed to hold on and win.

Gary won 3-1 against Aiden

Trevor won 3-0 against Pepe. After the game they hugged!!

Shaun won 3-2 against Faizel

Hopefully Wits didn’t get a full house last night and we gained on them.

Match Result: 14-5
