4th LEAGUE A  vs Chamber B

The Derby – Chamber A v Chamber B

These derby matches are well known as banana skins for the A teams.  Would it be the same on this night?

Duncan up first against Gavin B.  A strange match with each alternating with sequences of 5 or 6 points in a row.  It remained very tight with two of the first three games going to 16-14.  The fourth game was another ding dong affair that went in favour of the eventual winner, Duncan. (3-1)

Vevek then took on the ever combative Danie at number 1.  The match was just getting going in the first game when Danie went over on his ankle and his night ended almost as soon as it had started. (3-0)

Not sure anyone in the club wouldn’t have put some money on Flip and Bruce notgoing to a five setter and so it turned out to be.  Flip and Bruce alternated in sharing the first four games and in the fifth again it was neck and neck at 12-all only for Flip to take the next three points for a hard fought 3-2 win. (2-3)

Rich on against Dave in the last match of the evening.  Dave was all over Captain Rich in the first game only for the roles to be reversed in the second and then for Dave to power away in the third again.  The fourth was a titanic affair with Rich all but out of it but staged good comeback to take the fourth 16-14.  The final game was also tight but Dave had too much firepower in the end.  (2-3)

So 2 all in matches and 12-7 overall is probably not a fair reflection of what may have been a lot closer had it not been for Danie’s unfortunate injury

Overall result:  Won 12 - 7

5th LEAGUE 04  vs Alberton

Not much to report.
We managed to find the courts.
All won easily even though Fergus dropped one game.
Alberton provided dinner prepared by Mike Wade's wife, then with passport in hand we headed back to civilization.

Won 16-1
Overall result: Won  16 - 1

6th League 06 “A” (for Awesome) .vOld Eds

TIME

I think that what differentiates a skilled squash player from the morass of the ever hopeful & optimistic sluggers of the squash ball, is the ability to create time on the ball.

·         TIME to get into position to play the ball…
·         TIME to think and evaluate options…
·         TIME to see where the opposition is positioned and where he is heading…
·         TIME to adjust the intended shot to suit the circumstances…
·         TIME to play/caress/stroke/smash/drop the ball at will…
·         TIME to get back into to the “T” ready to give the next return the same treatment all over again.

I remain ever hopeful that I will learn some of the skills I talk about and not be relegated to the horde of wannabees that can merely talk-the-talk and not walk-the-walk. ¶ TIME is not on my side ¶ mister Mick Jagger.

On at #4 and Leslie set about dispelling any doubts about his placement in the team. He played some structured play and capitalised on Raymond’s unwillingness to run for the short ball. He also ran his personal trainers posterior off! Nice start to the evening although I had trepidation about how the remainder of the match was going to pan out. (3-0)

On at #3 a sprightly and confident Jacques who had the measure of the man he was playing but Thepiso had a ferocious drive and crosscourt that kept low to the tin and floor alike. He kept himself in contention but could not climb the mountain. I terrible leveller of the playing fields. (0-3)

Karel aka this week’s sacrificial lamb at #1 had his hands full as he tried to quell the fire that was igniting the heels on Njabulo’s shoes. This guy was like daisy chain/jumping jack firecracker. Karel found some fight against the squash celebration big banger but was ultimately outclassed. (0-3)

Methinks I am not the man for pressure matches because all I could think about was “I gotta win 3-0” and then promptly lost the first game. BANG! I think Tinashe was in fine form and I will be kicking myself for some time as I try to deal with my loss to our part-time club member. (1-3)

Match result – disastrous!!!

7th League 08 vs Old Eds

They arrived early with a driver and manager. No wonder a driver because they were all young, very young!
Anthony, #1, went on against a thin Nyiko (15 years old). Unfortunately, Anthony made a lot more unforced errors than his opponent and went down 3-0 by 12, 10 and 10. He needs more match practise so is open to offers from fellow members.
As there were courts free George, #4, took on a cocky, 13-year-old Kgaugelo. George had everything under control winning the first two games. THEN, he was kicked off by a 6thleague captain (no names but writes a lot!) and had to wait for our #1’s to finish. This break cost him the rubber as he lost momentum. Kgaugelo must have listened to his Manager and took the next three to 4, 4 & 11.
Two rubbers down, not looking good.
Next, our ex #1, Nick, loaned from 6th league, played lady or more accurately girl, Rina (also 15 years old) at #2. With his long shorts (maybe a combination of short legs!) and killer instinct, he won the rubber 3-0 to 7, 5 & 8.
Mike, on last again, needed to win to take the match. He played girl Nebebe who was less than a quarter of his age! Maturity ruled and Mike whisked through the rubber 3-0 to 4, 4 & 9. Not needing a shower Mike immediately paid the bar bill and waited for George (who had kindly given him a lift to the match) to go to Doppio’s. Only to find out that George (he must have been hungry) had already buggered off leaving Mike stranded! Fortunately, he came back wearing a sheepish grin and gushing profuse apologies.
A good meal was had by all and several other Chamber players. It transpired that the captain that kicked George off the court earlier, lost. Who says there is no justice!

Squash Tip of the Week
Never take an extended break between games as this leads to a significant loss of concentration and time for the opponent to regroup.

Overall result: Won 10 - 6

9th League OMT vs  Pirates

The awesome OMT played Pirates at home. They were there early despite the rain and traffic, and they are toppies just like us! Well almost but not quite. They played 8th League last year and should have stayed there.....

First up @ #2 was the OMT's only real squash player Dizzie Dessie (DD) against John. On form straight away, Des took the first 15/9. John reciprocated in the second - 9/15. Des would have none of that and took the third 15/10. Lo and behold, Des could manage only 3 points in he fourth! Two all......... Des pulled himself together and the match of the evening ensued. 14 all in the fifth - and here we go - two points needed to win the game and the match....... Des held game and match point a number of times but went down by the skin of his teeth kicking and screaming 21/23!!!!!!!!  2 - 3

Next up @ #3 against Tim was Jenny who graciously agreed to help out the OMT as Rocky Roger was rocking in Namibia, Captain Bob was taking another well deserved and long overdue break at the larny Verlorenkloof Estate near Lydenburg and JohAn was recuperating from minor big toe surgery......... With lovely style and striking the ball beautifully, Jen got real close to taking the first game - 13/15. Tim got the message and upped the ante conceding only 4 in the second. Jen tried her best and played her heart out managing eight points in the third. 0 - 3

John F came up against Tony @ # 4. Johnny managed 8, 8 and 9 points against a much stronger player. Excellent for the OMT's eldest (74) player who suffered a minor stroke in November last year but has recovered miraculously by the grace of God as he is, in the words of his neurosurgeon, a fit and strong young man. 0 - 3

Last but not least, Keith played Ken @ # 1 due to the absence of Roger who is our real # 1 this year. CFK (Cannon Fodder Keith) did not have a good game as Ken is an ex KZN Provincial player who should be playing at about sixth league level. Arnie had a bad fall forward in the third. At first, never mind his bruised knees, it looked like our Scott suffered at least a fractured wrist and/or finger, but it turned out not to be that bad. Thank goodness. His gamely participation ended early, and Ken sportingly agreed that Dessie could complete the third game obo the SFO (Short Fingered One). After a good run, DD did not take the third having come into the game somewhat behind on points....... 0 - 3

Match score 2 - 16

Off to Doppio, four of us (Jen could not join us) and all four of them. Good socialising followed. What a great bunch of guys from Pirates (playing well below their capabilities).
