4th LEAGUE B vs Wanderers
After languishing near the bottom of the table, we needed a good result to reach the lofty heights of mid-table mediocrity. And after our other 4th league team gave Wanderers a hiding, this was even more the case.
Chris got us off to a good start against the crafty Keith. Although the scoreline made it look easy, it belies the fact that Chris had to be ruthless and not give Keith a sniff as he can quickly turn a game on its head. Chris kept him pinned back in the corner on the serves and never gave him back the advantage. Several shots that Keith was sure were winners were beautifully anticipated by Chris. Won 3-0.
Then Phil was playing a grudge match against Mike, who he had lost to in Masters. Games were all close, especially the second game where Phil was 13-9 up but lost 15-13. However, Mike had the edge on crucial points and made Phil pay with some screaming shots on Phil’s backhand. Lost 0-3.
With scores even, Gavin had to take on the typically irate Dino. Luckily the marker (Keith) kept Dino in his place and the match proceeded with relative calmness. Or at least without Armageddon taking place. Despite finding more tin than a Koo canning factory, Gavin managed to coast to an easy win in the first game. Second game was a bit tighter, but Gavin shut Dino out when it counted. A (by now) subdued Dino was no match for Gavin in the 3rd. Won 3-0.
Last on, Nigel vs Jonny with Nigel needing a solitary game to get a team win. Both players runners, the first game advantage swung between them but was edged by Nigel. A second game implosion saw Jonny getting 9 consecutive points and cruise through the game almost unchallenged. Some calm, wise words from Gavin in the interval had Nigel slowing things up and hitting a good length, allowing Jonny to make the mistakes and hand Nigel a 2-1 lead. Final game was hard fought with Nigel sneaking in after some hard chasing rallies. Won 3-1
A welcome result as we go into several hard weeks against the teams at the top of the table…

5th LEAGUE 04 vs Hope SC
Hope arrived with VERY young legs – played amongst themselves for 30 minutes or so just to warm up. But we weren’t scared cos we’ve got Dilly in our team and Darren back from honeymoon raring to go.
Dilly on 1st at No 2 came up against their best player and did well to get a game. Wesley was just too fast and nimble.
Darren next at 4 played Hillary (no not a girl). Came out smoking after his enforced break and kept his unbeaten record this season to win 3-1.
The Silver Fox came up against one of the twins, Winfred, another runner of note. Luckily good shot placement forced him to do numerous splits to retrieve the ball resulting in a pulled groin. Silver ran out a 3-1 winner.
All down to Kobus playing the other twin, William, to get at least a game. And after being clobbered in the 1st 2, Kobus rallied to take the 3rd and fought in the 4th to get 10 points.
Those last 2 points of Kobus’ won us the match and so he was awarded the MVP of the night.

First up at # 2 was Des vs Lood. Well, suffice it to say that the first match turned out to be the match of the evening. Des came back from 0/2 down to take both the 3rd and the 4th 15-13. Well done Des! 2/2. Lood squeaked in by the skin of his teeth in the 5th also 15-13. 2/3
Next to play was Arnie against Shawn at #1. Keith managed 4, 7 and 7 points. 0/3.
Then JohAn took on Matium at # 3. JohAn managed 8 points in both the 1st and 2nd games. Matium then decided to give JohAn a run by stroking the ball beautifully down both the walls. And run JohAn did! Matium made sure he took the third, 17-15….. 0/3
Finally, Bobby played Ryan at #4, his favourite (and privileged) position, because he is the CAPTAIN and HE decides who plays where . It was an up and down game with Bob getting 12, 4, and 9 points. 0/3
Off to Doppio, all five of us, for the usual catch-up and socialising. Piet from Modderfontein, whose son Mark klapped JohAn last week, joined us

This Monday there were 5 Ladies teams playing at home and amazingly enough all 5 managed to win. The only loser on the night was CE02 who played the extremely strong Western Rackets team away.

On Monday at Chambers we had relatively easy matches. Our new prodigy Becky learnt a lesson in playing a strong left handed opponent. So all her sneaky shots down the left wall went to her opponents very strong forehand. But after an epic 5 games she emerged the victor 3 games to 2. 15-10 7-15 17-15 14-16 15-11
