4th LEAGUE B vs Dainfern
The arrival of the chilly weather had done nothing for our league fortunes. Off we were to the dark, winding, roadwork plagued confines of Dainfern estate. On arrival we were greeted with… the friendly faces of our 5th league team. And, of course, the less friendly countenances of our Dainfern foe.
Chris got the evenings proceedings off to a fine start against Neil, a rivalry spanning many years. Neil started with much gusto to take a marathon first game 18-16. Then Chris took charge to take the next two games comfortably. Neil must’ve been read the riot act by his teammates as he put in another blustering effort to win the fourth. But that saw the legs fall off as Chris romped home in the final game, sealing the victory with an emphatic fist-pump (witnessed by the Chairman who commented that Dave Peacock would have awarded an instant COTY for this manoeuvre). Won 3-2.
Fergus, returned from his Camino stroll in Northern Spain, had to contend with the fit and fast Sharon. Sharon sped up the pace of the game, putting pressure on Ferg and not allowing him to settle in. Fergus was still shaking pilgrimage dust out of his socks and hadn’t found his usual deft and tricky touch. Tough game to come back to. Lost 0-3.
Gavin then took on Grant in a game of two halves – Grant totally dominating the backhands with tight drops from anywhere on that side of the court, and Gavin powering through the forehands sending them screaming past Grant. Unfortunately Gavin played into Grant’s strengths gifting him the first game. Second and third were both tight games with the honours shared. Some errors from Gavin in the fourth saw Grant gain a substantial lead which he never relinquished. Lost 1-3.
Finally, Nigel vs the unbeaten Pete. I soon saw why he had the unbeaten tag. Everything, and I mean everything, was lobbed to the back corners, the lobs getting such height that they came down with icicles attached. As noted after the game, it was a match of attrition and patience (a lesson for me as this counters my usual style of play). Pete dominated the first two games, turning me with almost every shot as I tried to scramble back to retrieve. I changed tack, game plan A not having worked, and tried him at his own game – patience. This seemed to work for a while and I managed to get even at 2-2. But then Pete put in some drops and changed things up a bit – the previous games having taken their toll, I couldn’t compete and succumbed. Enjoyable, if frustrating, match with many a lesson learned. Lost 2-3.
Evening was ended at Jonny’s Mozambican with some cold beers and hot chicken.
Overall result: Lost 6 -14

5th LEAGUE 04 vs Dainfern
My first visit to the Dainfern and Lucy made me feel like an idiot wielding a stick as she fired off 6 points before I realized that there was a match afoot! I lost the first and was gently reminded of some basics by my teammates and this helped me win the next two games and then fell into the haze again and lost the fourth. The marker was calling a dreadful game but fortunately he was getting it wrong for both parties and this upset the match to some degree but not as much as Lucy hurting her ankle and she limped through the final game trying to accumulate as many points as she could but effectively handing me the match. I was lucky I wasn’t put to the sword. (3-2)
Kobus then played someone new to the team and although he was a little loose he managed to put away the drops at the right time and thereafter all he really needed to do, was keep the ball in play and wait for the invariable mistake from Shaun to win his match without too much mucking about. MVP for the night. (3-0)
Paul comes up against Lucy’s hard hitting and speedy paced playing husband - Gary. Paul won the 1st but then fell into his hasty trap and was rushing his game and was suddenly 1-2 down but as things progressed, he slowly started dictating his pace and tact to good effect. Paul focused well and managed to pull back from an almost certain defeat in the fourth and then, I think, just exhausted Gary into submission in the 5th and thus securing us the fixture win. (3-2)
Silver had a topsy- turvey first game and needed to be reminded that we were actually trying to get a 16 pointer if at all possible (for a change). John thought that this constituted unsporting behavior but was willing to give it a go and duly won the second without really breaking a sweat and then thought that he would try playing a game where he doesn’t have to run for the ball when it’s short and guess where Harald played the ball? Well, needless to say that his plan didn’t work and he lost the 3rd. Then the sin of all Silver sins was – he was 14-11 up in the 4th and managed to Wally his way into losing the match 14-16. Who knew that our chairman is actually human too!!! (1-3)
We watched the last game on the adjacent court where our brothers in arms – the 4th leaguers (aka THE UGLY ONES) were playing and Nigel was playing Peter Dickenson at his own game. He put up a brave and good fight but succumbed in the final stages to lose in the 5th. L
The restaurant that we went to had had some disaster in the kitchen and we could barely see each other or breath clearly the smoke was so thick in the air. Very expensive but very tasty Chicken and Chips for everyone – they have no time for banting vegetarians in Dainfern.
Overall result: Won 13- 7

9th LEAGUE OMT vs Modderfontein
The OMT played Moddies
No supporters as Paddy and four of our seven team members were away all over the place/country/world…. Which means we were a player short. Andrew Jensen who captains the YMT agreed to help and Lood graciously agreed to play for us…….
First up at # 1 was Lood vs. Brandon. Lood went down 12-15 in the 1st and UP 15-12 in the 2nd. Well, suffice it to say that we sensed another hard five setter in the making. Lood klapped Brandon 15- 6 in the 3rd but then HE got klapped 7-15 in the 4th! But that was it, Lood going down 8-15 in the 5th. Well done and thank you Lood! No white-wash tonight for the OMT . 2/3
Next to play was Brian against Anthony at #2. Brian went UP 16-14 in the 1st in a hard fought game. But that was it, Brian then fell off the cliff with 9, 6 and 2 points. Given the fact that it was Brian’s last day in a box business job where he has been slaving away for 26 years, it is perhaps understandable that his mind went AWOL…… 0/3.
Then Arnie took on Werner at # 3. Keith demolished Werner, only conceding 12, 11 and then 6 points. Well done Arnie, you never missed a beat! A well-deserved win which will boost your confidence big time. 3/0
Finally, JohAn played Neill at #4, his best position – where he belongs and should play. Neill brought his gorgeous Fiancé along. She plays netball….. And she marked this game! Well, JohAn got lucky tonight because the youngster Neill only started playing squash this year and it was clear in the 1st game that Neill was still finding his feet/arms/strokes as he only managed 3 points. Being the utter gentleman that he is, JohAn then gave Neill a good run in the 2nd almost losing it! 15-13. JohAn paced himself well in the 3rd and gave Neill another good run 15-11. Lucky JohAn! 3/0
We were hosted very well by Brandon and Co out of his HUGE cooler box with all sorts of good things to drink. Unfortunately both Brian and Arnie had to run, but Lood and JohAn made the best of it – the usual, preferred, best, East Rand after league squash dinner, steak, egg and chips!
Match Score 11 - 6

LADIES 3rd LEAGUE 04 vs Modderfontein
Sonelle lost to Raina 15 17, 12 15 and 8 15 – and played a cracker of a match against one of the top youngsters in Gauteng!
Jenny lost to Khanyisile 9 15, 5 15 and 11 15 – and again, played great shots against a youngster that’s probably too young to even be in her class at school!
Tayla lost to Mumuza 12 15, 15 12, 11 15, 15 9 and 12 15 – so a loss but only just, and but for a few tinnies (and not of the alcoholic sort) she would have won! Well played Tayla!
Mandy beat Tarryn 15 8, 8 15, 15 8 and 16 14 – by the hair on my chinny, chin-chin!
Overall result: Lost 5 - 13
