Weekly Update

Chamber is still heading for 4 or 5 trophies this year with both ladies teams, and mens 4th, 7th, & 9th leagues riding high. We could also be in line to win the Callaghan Trophy (for best mens overall league performance), the Aggregate Trophy (best ladies overall league performance) and the Transvaal Trophy (best combined mens & ladies overall league performance). Every teams position in the league counts towards these trophies so every match counts.

11th LEAGUE vs Modderfontein

After going down the previous week against Wits without picking up a game, we were up against top of the league Modderfontein. We were certain though, that things couldn’t get any worse. We were almost mistaken…

Up first at number 3 was fill in player Paul. Despite some good rallies and sneaky shots, he eventually succumbed 3 – 0 to Andrew.

On next at number 1 was Nigel who had a shocker against the beer swilling, absinth toting Orrin. Another 3 – 0 loss with only token resistance in the last game. Things will have to take a turn for the better at some stage. Hopefully.

Next it was Graham vs Greame in the number 2 spot. Once again all returns from Graham Cumming were to no avail and he was dispatched without picking up a game. So, another 3 – 0 loss and the home gallery was very quiet. This was getting downright embarrassing.

It was up to the old campaigner, Keith, to restore some sense of pride in the team and allow some sort of backbone to remain for next week. Maybe it was the promise of cold beer after the game, or thoughts of bonny Scotland that inspired him, but Keith fought hard to take the match 3 – 1 to a standing ovation from the cheap seats.

Final result 3 - 13

10th league vs. Parkview

We are not fortunate enough to be in an easy league like ‘9A’ so we are proud of our 4 consecutive wins! Once again we reversed the result against the same side earlier in the season. Without a shadow of doubt, Man of the Match goes to Richard Lees for his remarkable reversal of form in the fourth game (it was only 4 months coming!). After struggling through three games to go 1-2 down (as usual), something finally clicked and he played like a demon to take the next two games 9-1 and 9-0. Welcome back Richard and keep up the magnificent squash. Steph once again played great squash against a strong opponent with extended rallies but couldn’t quite grab the fifth game. Naren played crafty squash (and a few more tricks too) to put paid to the ‘heavy breather’ (we had already called 911 in case he collapsed on court). Phil P took another 3-0 win and his luck of playing against the weakest opponent continues. Thanks once again to Naren to helping us out of a tight spot (and winning valuable games for us too). May the good times continue.

  1. Steph 2-3
  2. Naren 3-1
  3. Phil P 3-0
  4. Richard 3-2

9th League B vs. Bryanston

Not so easy and not so convincing..........but a victory anyway.

On first was the ol' toppie Big 'G' Gavin Martin.....and man is he old, bent and buckled. But due credit is given as he whipped his oppo. 27 - 1 without so much as raising a sweat, mind you if he had to that would have been interesting as he has a buckled ankle, sore shoulder, bruised ribs, sore leg, sore arm, sore head - which part of the body is OK?.

Next up was our import Manie Krause, up against a New Zealand las and man did she give him the run around for the first two games, then a spot of gamemanship followed, i.e. "Manie get beaten 3 - 0 and find another club to play at was mentioned by the cappie, and Hayley (NZ las) was reminded that MCP's don't approve of ladies beating us 3 - 0 especially if you come from "the convicts outcasts - NZ). Well..... Manie pulled it back to 2 all but got pipped in the last.

On next was the teams sports reporter, back after a life threatening injury........easy game......easy win 3 - 0.

Last up was our kingpin Pete Le Roux against 'the Chinaman'. Pete never gave up but just couldn't get the better of him, and then on match point decided that he wanted to vomit, so walked off and caught a breather, but that still didn't work and lost 1 - 3.

So a not so convincing 9 - 6 win.

Results

#4 Gavin Martin won 3 - 0 9 - 0, 9 - 0, 9 - 1.

#3 Digby Chapman won 3 - 0 9 - 5, 9 - 3, 9 - 1.

#1 Manie Krause lost 2 - 3 5 - 9, 6 - 9, 9 - 7, 9 - 4, 4 - 9.

9th League A vs. Alberton

13 played and 13 won. However this is not truly reflected in the league table as we are second behind Southern Suburbs who we beat. Bruce arrived early and comprehensively beat his opponent and proceeded to drink the bar dry (such a hassle playing first and so early) whilst the rest of us played which resulted in two decaf coffees at the celebratory meal at Dopio 00. Where is the staying power? Michael arrived on time to go straight on and loose his unbeaten record to a younger man from Wales who obviously played better than their rugby team and boasted (that continued all night) about having quaffed half a dozen beers before the game. Michael resorted to blaming the blameless ref, poor show, asking for lets that needed imagination, was feeling pissed off for letting the team down and as our marathon runner commented “you would have beaten him on any other day!” Shame it was not an other day. George followed after having had a Voltaren jab at lunch time and a tablet(s) at 4 to alleviate a painful back which he assured the team was not due to hanky panky the previous evening. We were not convinced till he pulled out his finger, on court, and won well. Mark complete with new shoes that must have gradually dazzled his opponent ‘cos it was plain sailing after loosing the first game and yes he is improving and made at least three drops whilst in front of his opponent with a 66.66% success rate.

Squash Commentary of the Week

Is there a call for reviewing the league grading system? A suggestion of matches won followed by points.

#4: George played Clive 3-1: 9-4, 7-9, 9-5, 9-7

8th League v Edenvale

By the time I got there, we had already won with Andy and Manie both winning 3-0. I hear that Stuart put in a great effort to lose 3-2. Good sportsmanship award (??) to Stuart who offered his opponent a let after everyone (including his opponent and the marker, and all spectators) saw his shot as good, on game point in the first – a game he went on to lose! Duncan won 3-0, 10-9 in the third, learnt a lot from Andy over the season and took advantage of the cold courts. So 14-3 to Chamber.

Match result: 14-3

7th League vs Krugersdump

So the Dukes of (H)Azaardville descended en masse on the Mid Western hub of Chamberville to see if they outwit the competition and avenge their 16-1 thrashing earlier in the year. So enter Bo, Luke and Uncle Jessie, but sadly no Sheriff Roscoe P...... Coltraine, who was tied up with flu, so had just a three-header. Non-playing captain Bullen therefore managed to sit out once more, even though a game was anticipated! At least our opponents turned up - the fearsome 5th leaguers literally scared Jeppe away!

The bonnet of the General Lee was still warm, however, when the night was over and them good ole boys from Chamberville had kicked them Dukes' sorry butts. Yeee-haw!

InviciPhil went on first at no. 2 on court 5. Now inviciPhil is not called inviciPhil for nothing. He has not lost a single game all season. That's right, until tonight he had won every game 3-0. However, Uncle Jessie was wise to this and to everyone's surprise InviciPhil fell asleep in the third game to go 2-1. He then shifted back into gear, did a quick stunt roll, and ripped out the 3-1 victor. Yeee-haw!

Gavin G went on simultaneously on court 4. Gavin barely broke into a sweat and was striking the ball absolutely sublimley against Bo. 3-0. Yeee-haw!

Finally, Richard demonstrated that even promoted to 1, he has room to perform. A little nitrous in the fuel tank and it was all over for Luke within minutes. 3-0.

So Bo, Luke and Uncle Jessie leapt back in the General Lee and headed back to (H)Azaardville. We told them that if they had brought Daisy they could have stayed, but instead they left with their tails between their legs.

Match result: 16-1.

So the result was a repeat of the first leg. This Krugersdorp team is third in the league. We have no idea how. The bad news is that we have probably lost our number 1, Flip, for the whole season, unless the quacks can drain the pond water from his leg and get him back sooner.

Message for 9th league A: Winning is not everything. Nobody remembers the runner up, even they are unbeaten. If you need a lesson in how to win in style, we're available.

Match result : 16-1

5th LEAGUE vs Jeppe

We all arrived at the courts spot on 6.30 chomping at the bit to avenge the 16-3 drubbing received from Jeppe in the 1st match. At 7.00pm there was no sign of them and nobody answering their cell phones. At 7.30 we decided to have a spot of doubles and claim the points.

At 9.00 messages are returned. According to their schedule they have a bye, please could we re-arrange as they are close with Suburbs at the top of the league. Being the nice guys we are, we agreed but rest assured we won’t be nice when they get on court. Especially as their captain tried to negotiate that we copy the result of the 1st match instead of playing (we lost that 16-1). Ha….just wait.
