5th League “the G Team” vs Wanderers

It was definitely a game of two halves....

First up was BigG, newly returned from a potentially reputation threatening groin injury on to face the young, thin, red haired runner who's name i now forget. After looking very impressive during the warm up, BigG found himself down 6-1 within a few minutes once the game started. Drawing from years of experience, BigG managed to unsettle his opponent with some great length and powerful drives to recover and take the first game. This caused a small crack in the confidence of the runner that was totally smashed after an awesome backhand-over-the-head-behind-the-back-drop-into-the-nick by the larger player. BigG ran out the rest easily to win 3-0.

Then up was kmpG who is struggling to settle on the g-nickname. Some say that he prefers the name CostasG, but the jury is still out. Andrew ran into an inform Dylan that had absolutely no respect for loose, short down the middle of the court shots, killing them at will. kpmG, who is a much better player was sadly off form and got his arse kicked 3-0. He did however win the "Maximum F-bombs dropped" section of the Friendship Cup, as well as the "How to argue with the ref and not win the fight because he is both bigger than you and more importantly also CORRECT" award.

that left us at 3-3.

On goes G-Bo who has been in spectacular form lately. The scribe went to have a shower and returned to find G-Bo down 2-0 to a smaller fitter player who kinda fancies himself as a Ninja based on the headband. Or a part time pirate. Not sure. The game was closer than the score reflects with G-bo losing a few crucial rallies late in each game to hand the game over. Sad but thats life.

So now we are 6-3 down and its over to LG to see if we can get to a points count out...

Lets be honest. LG is playing really consistant great squash at the moment and is the banker in the side. He made mincemeat of his rather fit looking opponent for the first two games. Some nice hitting with some devious boasts and reverse angles made his opponent look a bit rattled. 2-0 up and some frantic counting by the rest of the team showed that Duncan could not drop more than 5 points in the final game. A tough ask in the new scoring system.

LG came close but could not close it out and we tied 6-6 but lost the count out by 4 points.

We finished with a great pizza at Doppio's

Match result :  6 – 8

6th League A vs Southern Suburbs

Up against Southern Suburbs, again.

Stuart managed 3 - 0 at 4 to give the team odds, however an already strong 'Burbs imported a ringer at 2 to sort Gavin out, with Dillin at 1 continuing his impressive streak against Louis. Jacques needed to win 3 - 0 and despite a great effort, couldn't manage to pull it off.

Loss for Chamber. The captain's memory for scores is faulty.

7th B League vs. Wits

First up Peter LR against Steven. Steven breezed through the first 2 games, while Peter was still tying his laces. Third game Peter made a good comeback and at 13-13 in the fourth, the  game was well poised with Peter playing better squash. Unfortunately Steven came up with a couple of good winners to take the 4th 15-13 and the match 3-1.

Next on was Peter F against old rival Roy. A ding-dong battle with two evenly matched players. Peter up 2-1, Roy then levelling at 2-2. All down to the 5th.  By this stage there was a of banter, badgering and barking on the court. An even game until Peter rattled off a few good points at the end to win the 5th 15-11.

Chris on next against Bongi, a top Gauteng ladies player. Chris was battling from the first game, trying to avoid Bongi’s vicious backhand boast. He was desperately trying to keep Bongi in front of him (??) so dropping from the back of the court seemed to be his best option. And when Bongi picked up the return, that was it for Chris, no retort. And the supporters could not butt (sic) in either, we just watched in awe as the plot unravelled. Chris down 0-3.

Finally our import from 7A, Doc Fallon. Paul started like the Gautrain, flying at 180 km per hour, missing all the stops. He took the first two games and was looking great in the third. We were packing our bags and getting ready for Doppio’s, when, like the Gautrain, the cables were stolen and the train came to a grounding halt. Lights out and a sweet surrender from thereon, going down 2-3.  Don’t bother about helping out next week Paul, I think we have a volunteer from 15th league.

Final score 6-14

As usual, we proceeded to Doppio’s to pontificate about our chances in the league and more specifically how we could avoid relegation. But then we realised we still had to play the 7A team, and with the bragging rights still safely with us, we may just be able to relegate them........

Match score: 6 - 14

10th LEAGUE vs Wits

Played Wits at Chamber Wednesday night 21st  Sept. 2011

Wits romped home in a rampant display of youth versus age with an easy win of  4/12

First up and playing No. 1 was Paddy. Trying his hand at moving up the ladder he voluntarily elected himself as the No. 1 for the Chambers old codgers league.  Trouble is Wits had brought in the world champion as a stand in for their regular No. 1 and Paddy only got as far as opening the door to the Court before each game was already over.  A dismal defeat for Paddy at 0/3.

Next up at No. 2 was Brian, the strong man from the West.  He wasn’t going to let any brat hit the ball past him and promptly demolished the upstart  from Wits with a crushing 3/0 defeat. Chambers 10th league team was cruising again, but not for long.

Des was playing next in No. 3 and no matter where he put the ball the Wits player was there before him. The call from Debbie his wife during the second game to say she was stuck on the road with a flat battery didn’t  help but Des played bravely on to go down eventually 1/3 to a quick and determined Witsie.

Finally John playing at No. 4 demonstrated how much he deserved to be nominated in 2010 for the worst player of the decade.  He suffered an ignominious defeat of 0/3 at the hand of a surprisingly quick and slippery little opponent.

Better luck next time. At least the Pizzas tasted good and John brought cash instead of relying on his Greek credit card  to pay the bill.

Final result : 4 - 12

2nd LEAGUE vs UJ

A battle between the top 2 teams turned out to be a massacre.
Willem played first against Ian, a hard match with some monster rallies, but Willem’s batteries went flat first (maybe his bachelor’s party on Saturday had something to do with it) and he only managed to win 1 game.
Mike played next against Mark, again pretty hard close match, but Mike also couldn’t hold on and only managed to win 1 game. Maybe it had something to do with the magic trick he did in the 3rd – he managed to push his thumb through the crack at the back of the glass door on court 2. This gap is a fraction of the size of his thumb and I would have thought this was done with mirrors had I not been there.
Next up, Stan, our banker; no such luck. Jarryd took him apart in 3 games.
Last to play Gary. Against Montshiwagae,Motsie (Heston). Close games with Gary running out ahead in all 3, but not being able to finish.
We managed a mere 2 points for the evening. Hope this doesn’t jeopardise our 2nd spot.

1)      Stan 0-3
2)      Willem 1-3
3)      Mike 1-3
4)      Gary 0-3

4th League vs Old Eds

Played away to an Old Eds sided strengthened by bringing in a reserve at number one from 2nd league. Dave went on first at number 3 against a youngster, took the 1st two games very closely, was down 11-14 in the third and used all his experience to win a hard fought match 3-0.

Ryan then went on to play Toby at number one, managed to take a game and had chances in the fourth but just ran out of steam to lose 1-3.

Chris then went on to play Glen, lost the first very easily, fought back well to take the next game but then lost the third. Fourth game was very competitive, and with Chris being down 11-14 and match point, his opponent pulled his calf muscle but managed to hobble back to receive service. To everyone’s  surprise, Chris then served the next point out-of court to gift his opponent the match, still not sure if that was intentional or not, but definitely a COTY nomination.

Vevek then went on against their number 2, played well to beat a very quick and fit opponent in 3 sets, great win for the team.

Final Result
Ryan      1-3
Vevek   3-0
Dave      3-0
Chris      1-3

Match result : 10 - 6

4th League vs Bryanston

Played the 2nd placed team on the log, Ryan went on first at number 1, won a close 1st game, was up in the 2nd before losing 3-1, had chances to level in the 4th but did not take them. Vevek then went on against a very difficult opponent Kevin, won a close 1st game and then went on to lose the next two very easily, fought back well in the 4th and 5th for a good win. Flip went on next at number 3 to play Quinton, dropped the 2nd game but won comfortable 3-1. It was then all up to Chris to beat a reasonable unfit Darryl for the team victory, but Chris’s lack of focus and casual approach lost him the match 3-1 to an opponent he beat 3-0 last time out.

Final Result
Ryan      1-3
Vevek   3-2
Flip         3-1
Chris      1-3

Team won 8 - 11

5th League “the G Team” vs Wanderers

The G-team played Wanderers who are top of the league – all matches went to 5 games.

G-spot on first went 2-0 down and at 12-14 down in the 3rd looked to be out of it. But wait (dear reader) G-spot doesn’t give up easily and snuck in 16-14. In the 4th he was again 14-12 down……….but wait (dear reader) he came back again to win 16-14. After that the oppo was a broken man and went down 15-5 in the fifth. The motto (dear reader) – NEVER GIVE UP.

kpmG then on a against Jaco – a running acquaintance – and these guys ran. kpmG was 2-0 up lost the next 2 and had match points in the 5th before losing it 18-16.

LG then had another 5-set humdinger and like kpmG had a match point in the 5th before losing 18-16.

So the pressure was on G-Bow to win the match. G-Bow was 2-0 down but fought back brilliantly to level at 2-2 and was then 14-9 up in the fifth. The match was in the bag………………….but………………….(dear reader)………………his opponent had been watching G-spot and never gave up. Incredibly he won that game 16-14. G-Bow was a broken man!!!

We lost by 9 points I think, but I don’t think I’ve ever played in a match where all 8 players had match points.

Match result :  10 – 12

5thth League “the G Team” vs Southern Suburbs

Suburbs are 2nd bottom so this match should be easy……but………read on (dear reader)

G-spot was outplayed and lost 3-1

BigG used his superior fitness!!!!!! To win 3-2

G-Bow played excellently to win 3-1 and banish the nightmare of the previous match

So LG just needed 2 games for a points count (and we’re up on points). At 2-1 down LG got to 14-11 up but couldn’t hold on against an extremely hard hitting plumber. Life was not good

Match result :  8 – 11

6th League A vs Southern Suburbs

Long overdue game against the ous from the deep South.

Gavin acquited himself well at 1, taking a much needed game off Dilin (that's how they spell it) who has apparantly not lost a match all season.

Gerhard (aka The Banker) at 2 came back from 2 down to subdue his boisterous and hard-hitting opponent. Sort of like a locomotive - sloooow start but managing to work up to a decent speed and give us a shot at the match.

Stuart managed to take his match 3 -1, with the prospects of winning thge match looking good.

Louis on at the death started well going 2 up, then lost the plot to lose 3-2. He's lucky Helena wasnt there!!

Points count - Chamber loses.

Match result : 9 – 11

6th League A vs Wits

"Gerhard the banker" didn't live up to his reputation, going down 1-3 in a match which saw the stalwart choeking at less than his best.

At 2, Gavin managed to get 2 games against Dhiren, leaving the last two players to deliver the goods.

Stuart lost the warm up, and also the match. 2 -1 up with prospects looking good, he couldn't keep his grip on the game and went down 2-3 to a fitter, younger model.

Jacques, up against Jumbo Skinner for the second time the season, barged his way to an easy 3 - 0 win, outplaying his opponent from the start.

Match result : 8 – 12

6th B League vs Southern Suburbs

Unaccustomed as I am ….. this report will be brief!  Chamber  6B took on a luminous yellow Southern Suburbs last Tuesday.  Clearly the colouring was too bright for Lyal at no 4 who went down 0-3 to a short but determined Garret with diamond studded earing.

Phil put us back on track by beating Duane with ease.  They breed them tough in the south, as the three stiches in Duane’s eye lid received three days earlier from a squash racket  did not seem to affect his game – Phil was just on form.

Big G, standing in for us again (thank you Big G!) went in at No 1 against Dilin who is a little “out of place” in the 6th.  Big G managed to take 13 points in the second game but unfortunately was outplayed.  Lastly Bruce took on a very serious and determined Okkie, who happened to be the opponent guilty of inflicting the three stiches in Duane’s eye.

A little respectful of Okkies swing I managed to pull off a 3-2 win which meant we went down by two games.

George vs Dilin – 0-3 (6-15,13-15,9-15)
Bruce vs Okkie 3-2 (15-7, 10-15,15-12,12-15,15-8)
Phil vs Dwayne  3-0 (15-6,15-11,15-7)
Lyal vrs Garrett – 0-3 (13-15,13-15,13-15)

Match score: 6 - 10

6th B League vs Wanderers

Tough games were always on the cards against second on the log Wanderers. Everyone was back from all corners of the continent and we could field a side without I, Substitute for the first time in a while. Didn’t help our performance though – this ended up being embarrassing. In a batch of games featuring 3 Bruces and 2 Phils there was another glaring similarity – that being the results i.e. us being drilled by them.

At no.4 Phil  Alves was up against Bruce #1: Bruce was a fetcher of note and didn’t let anything go. The game was a good match up and featured two impressive comebacks; one from Wanderers and one from Chambers. Bruce pipped Phil in the end of a hard running 5 setter. Phil lost 2-3.

At no. 2 Bruce Bydawell was playing Louie. Bruce had some pressure on to keep up his unbeaten record in the league. The two players were evenly matched with Bruce getting off to a flyer in the first and getting 8 – 0 up before his opponent tightened up his game. It ended up being a very tight first game with Bruce holding out to take it 17-15. Despite the rest of the match being a thriller, it was the last game Bruce would win and it brought and end his unbeaten season. Bruce lost 1-3.

Nigel vs Phil at no. 1: not much to report other than it was a display of dominance. Great length from Phil and too tight – I was finished off without troubling Phil and have been threatened with a trip back to Ghana. Nigel lost 0-3.

Mark vs Bruce #2 at no. 3: Mark was up against a deceptive Bruce whose awkward style of play belied some good shots. Mark him on the ropes though, but somehow allowed him to sneak back in and take it to another 5 setter. Again, this wasn’t to go our way and Bruce played some risky shots which all came good against a keen, but tiring Mark. Mark lost 2-3.

A bad evening out for Chambers and our first 16 pointer down. We’ll have to pull some finger at the end of the season to fight our way back up the log a bit.

Match score: 5 - 16

7th A League vs. Edenvale

Off to the dark, dark car park of Edenvale. “Will my car be safe? You have a Merc, they only steal bakkies!” quote from recently employed car guard. True as the car was there after the match.

At  #1 Paul did a Usain Bolt in the first game and lost it. The next three games, sprinkled with excellent retrieving by Paul, biased marking (according to the opposition) by Mike and the odd, elegant dive by Paul went his way and Paul won 3-1.

At #4 George dispatched his opponent with ease despite a groin strain (how this is linked with a Morris Minor steering column failure I don’t know and neither does Amstel), shaky knees and a late call up due to Stephan flu (get well soon). George maintains his 100% winning record and long may it last.

At # 3 it was Mike squared. Mike vs Mike and Mike won. It was a ding dong affair. Mike Lawrensen (ML) took the first, Michael Hunt (MH) took the second, ML the third easily, MH the fourth. In the fifth ML raced to 8-2, oops, MH clawed back to 9-9, ML 13-10, even more oops then MH with
measured, calculated, cool stroke play and a gout ridden elbow took the next two points to win 3-2.

On for a 16; the first since the white washing of Randburg.  Papa needed a win. “No problem, this chap has never beaten me”. Nic wins the first, looking good; Nic wins the second, looking even better; Nic looses the third; Nic bombs out in the 4th, difficult to come back from 14-0 down. In the 5th Nic runs out of legs; happens when they are short and his opponent won 3-2; a good comeback.

A much need 14-6 win going into the two week break. Time for the disabled in our team to recover!

For only the second time in 10 years, George Bowen did not make the meal and Nic represented us, thank you.

PS. Randburg did not pitch!

Match score: 14 – 6

7th A League vs. UJ

Match summary, we were outclassed by the youth brigade.

First on was George, who unfairly reserved 4th spot just because he was there first. He put up a game fight against Thabo (who mysteriously appears as Jared on the score sheet).
At 2-1 up it looked like George might prevail, but the wheels came off a bit in the 4th and 5th games, when Thabo started reading the two-handed backhand. Best match of the evening.

Next on was Paul against wily Grant, who was just too good. Paul put up some resistance in the 2nd game and caught Grant out a few times by delaying his shot long enough to get awarded strokes, but it was one way traffic.

Next door, Nick the Greek engaged Murray in similar battle. Despite taking the third game and playing the broken ankle card (the race card would have been pointless), Nick also succumbed.
Steph on last against James fared no better. A brief glimmer of form in the second game vaporised in the last two games.

All done and dusted by 20h30. The youth said they had to go home to their mothers, so the adults went off to Doppios for much needed refreshment.

Grant vs Paul:                    3-0:        15-9, 15-12, 15-9
Murray vs Nick:                 3-1:        15-8, 15-4, 8-15, 15-9
James vs Steph:                3-1:        15-9, 8-15, 15-8, 15-8
Thabo vs George:            3-2:        17-15, 10-15, 13-15, 15-8, 15-8

Match score: 4 - 16

7th B League vs. Southern Suburbs

David lost 0-3

7th B League vs. Winchester Hills

Once again we could only raise 3 players for our match against Winchester Hills with 3 of our players away.

Chapman fishing somewhere in Zimbabwe
Hamilton climbing somewhere on the Kilimanjaro
Vermaak at a wedding somewhere in Germany

So we played our match already down one game in a very noisy super gym somewhere in Alberton with Le Roux and Van Zyl doing their bit by winning their games 3-1 and 3-2 but Fillmore letting down the side losing 2-3.

Ladies 3rd LEAGUE vs Randburg

The ladies 3rd league played against Randburg on monday night.

It was a very entertaining evening. Audrey had a tough game as not only did she have to try and concentrate on playing the game but had to remain calm as her opponent complained and was completely full of attitude.

Fefi had an amazing game as every single fancy and sneaky shot worked like a charm for her. Her opponent did not even get a chance to get into the game.

Julie had a tough five setter. She struggled to get into the game in the beginning and then dominated until the end of the match.

Jo played a tough opponent but had a really good running match.

The results were: Joanne won 3-0
Fefi won 3-0
Audrey lost 2-3
Julie won 3-2

Overall result : 14 - 5

2nd LEAGUE vs Old Eds

We played the 2nd of Old Ed’s sides last night at the Ice Chamber.
Stan played Craig Collier, a very handy player with great shots. But, Craig didn’t have enough legs to run with Stan and got too tired towards the end.
Willem played Wayne Plit, big impact first game did the damage and Willem won the rest comfortably. (Although Wayne did say he tweaked something in the 2nd.)
Gary played Dave Lazer, a moderate run with Gary winning in 3.
Last up, Mike against Rob Halstead. Mike lost the first 18-20 but won the 2nd. The cold weather favoured Rob’s good shots and he won the next 2. But, Mike fought back and won.

Jeff played for 4th (to strengthen them) and got clubbed (easier in 2nd).
Next week we play the last of our 6 home games in a row spree against the league leaders – UJ.

Stan: 3-1
Willem: 3-0
Mike: 3-2
Gary: 3-0
