FIRST TROPHY WIN OF THE SEASON BY THE MASTER 3RD LEAGUE

WELL DONE GUYS

11th LEAGUE vs UJ

Tough night for us with both Brian and Geoff (No 1's and 2's) not available. This meant we used a reserve, Mario, for the first time this season. Geoff has been awarded a contract in Mpumalanga so we are not sure if he will be playing much for the remainder of the season so we may use Mario (who is keen to play) more often.

No 1; Mario - played a very good youngster - you know the type, doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, doesn't do anything other than run around a squash court 24/7 - and put up a good fight but just not fit enough. Lost 0/3.

No 2; Des - playing an old rival, Kurt, who beat Des last time around but not this time! Des played very well to win 3/2.

No 3; Bob - also played a similarly old rival, Mondli, who beat him in the last encounters and this time the match was a lot more even but not enough steam in Bob. Lost 1/3, but look at the scores (Bob first): 15/17; 15/9; 10/15; 15/17. Truly could have gone either way!

No 4; John - fresh out of hospital having had a "jump start" to his dickey heart and us expecting him to croak on the court - we even had ER24's number in our cellphones while he was on the court and his Will in my bag, surprised us all by playing a superb game (not to mention his opponent had to be shown how to hold the racket) and winning 3/1!!

We were a tad unlucky to lose 7/9.

Final result : 7 - 11

9th LEAGUE vs Alberton

It’s been a tough start to the season and we needed to get things back on track. But with Steph away – highest win ratio in the team – and Brennan on a jet plane somewhere, we were going to have to produce the goods. So we drafted in Naren to play the role of veteran and went to battle.

No. 4 Naren vs Karen – Naren had to leave early so he got saddled with the ice breaker. The first game quickly went the right way, but Karen came back strongly with some hot drops from the back of the court. Not strongly enough though to break through Naren’s concentration and he played sensibly to win 3-0.

No. 2 Lyal vs Sean – Lyal had to play the ‘giant killer’. Well, that is, last time he cleaned me up so he must be a killer of giants. Wasn’t looking good in the first game as Lyal kept up the percussion beats on the tin and folded to 15-6. But a stern talking to set him right and he won the next game. Only to see-saw and lose the third. Lyal is a sucker for punishing 5 setters though and got the fourth back. The fifth was fairly even up to 8 all whereupon Lyal started daydreaming of his imminent trip to Colombia and the possible bevy of stunners waiting for him there. He woke up too late to save the game and it can be definitively concluded that serving out when you’re 12-14 down in the fifth game is a bad tactic.

Overheard from 8th B side on the court next door, “My squash is okay, but my real strength is in the showers.” I won’t name the culprit, but let’s just say that I’ll be making sure that Digby isn’t in the changerooms when I need to freshen up.

No. 3 Phil vs Adam – Phil was sporting shiny hamstring supports and was in a mood to make them work in his quest for squash supremacy. Didn’t work in the first game though as Adam powered his way through. During the break, Phil was given some gems of advice (i.e. don’t hit to the centre of the court) and these worked wonders for his squash. Helped by good length and an abundance of mistakes by Adam, Phil romped home in the next three games.

No. 1 Nigel vs Robert – Pressure was off and the evening had been won, but we needed the league points. I was playing someone with the same style as myself – we both struggled to kill the ball. So each rally was longer than the Paris-Dakar (or has this been renamed the Paris-Argentino?). First two games went my way, but then I let a lead slip to lose the third. By this stage I was gasping like a fish out of water and my heart was beating faster than a lost tourist’s in Hillbrow would. Luckily Robert was also pretty far gone and I pipped him in the fourth to take the match.

After the squash and a quick shower (making sure that Digby had left the building) we repaired for some decent grub and a Jaggermeister in Melville.

Summary

4. Naren won 3-0: 15-8, 15-13, 15-11

3. Phil won 3-1: 9-15, 15-8, 15-10, 15-7

2. Lyal lost 2-3: 6-15, 15-8, 9-15, 15-8, 15-15

1. Nigel won 3-1: 15-12, 15-10, 12-15, 15-12

Final result :12 - 9

8th League “A” vs. Old Eds

For the second week running, Old Eds couldn’t raise a team.

8th league “B” vs. Bryanston

7th League vs. Wits

Another good win for the 7th against Wits!

16 -5

At 1 - Duncan played against Udo Bergmann and klapped him 3-1. Duncan (again) displayed clinical and precise squash and continues with his good form (I am guessing as I was marking on the next court).

At 2 –Manie played Dhiren Parbhoo and scraped through 3-2. Another case of Same Old.

At 3- Stuart played Steven? Gouws and won 3-2. After two games Stuart was down 2-0, looked (and sounded) down and out against a very cunning opponent but…. Stuart asked advise, went back ignoring all the advise offered. Set out to prove the advisors wrong and did exactly that. Excellent win.

At 4-Jaques played Marcel Malherbe and won 3-0. Game was a lot closer than suggested by the results, but Jacques did what was required when it was required and ended on top.

Our second 16 pointer for this half (and the season) celebrated with? - Coke and Energade – It is Wits remember.

Rich won 3-1

4th LEAGUE vs Jeppe

Jeff was injured but decided he would sacrifice himself at No 1 for the team. Needless to say he played brilliantly, concentrating on his shots rather than his running. A 3-2 win.

Ryan played Steve Langston – very similar game – both murring the ball to the back at every opportunity. Steve made less mistakes than Ryan and won 3-0

Vevek on next against Anton was not fit enough and lost 0-3. He promises to get fit!!

No pressure on the Silver Fox, then with the match lost, so in the interests of fitness a 5-setter ensued with the fox sneaking in comfortably 16-14 I the 5th.

Match result : 6 - 12

3rd LEAGUE vs Jeppe

First round, only Mike lost (to Walter) – this time he lost to Walter again.

Trevor played 1 last time, but played 3 this time and beat Willem.

We played on 2 courts, Gary and Francis played first. Gary played Colin who’s been there club champ many times, was a top school boy etc, but hasn’t been playing so started to cramp up and let me in. Francis did his usual, against Neil this time, and won comfortably.

Willem and Mike played next. Willem played Trevor and never seemed like he was in control although came back nicely in the 2nd to win that game. But, although coming close in the next 2 games, just couldn’t win. Mike had a humdinger with Walter (one game was 22-20), but went down.

So once again, points count out. Luckily we came out on top by 10 points.

Francisco: 3-1

Mike: 2-3

11th LEAGUE vs Edenvale

Brian No1 - Brian played a very good and fit (they all were being 20-something year old students!) player. Lost the first two games very closely (10/15 and 14/16), then in true Brian fashion, dug deep and played some great squash to take the next two games 15/12 and 15/12. It looked good in the fifth but old legs lost out with Brian going down 13/15. Quite honestly it could have gone either way. Not disgraced at all.

Paddy No2 - Also up against a useful youngster but in was plain to see the maturity would be the Witsie's un-doing. Paddy lost the first game 13/15 but slowly took control and the next three games = 17/15; 15/12 and 15/12.

Des No3 - Played a glamorous medical student named Claire. She was a good player but the brute strength of Des blew her away. Des won comfortably in three.

Bob No4 - Had the easiest night of the match taking the three games with his opponent never reaching double digits.

Final result : 14 - 4

9th LEAGUE vs Edenvale

The return leg of the Chamber-Edenvale encounter proved to be yet another bruising affair.

And without their inspiring captain, Nigel, who had taken the night off for mental and impending marital status reasons, the mighty 9th were that much more vulnerable to the Edenvale onslaught.

Phil Alves kicked off proceedings with a (at times) clinical finish. His opponent was a crafty veteran, but Phil out played him to take a 3-2 win.

Next up was Brannan Babb against the lanky, antelope/marsupial opponent - who was unrelenting in his defence and claiming of strokes and lets. It ended up being a battle of fitness and patience as Brennan slowly let it slip to a very narrow (but most entertaining) defeat of 2-3.

Two five setters in a row, made the number ones eager to do the same.

Lyal was up against an energiser sprinter - apparently a former SA/U19 100m/200m athlete....not sure what he is doing on a squash court of 10 by 10??

Anyhow, off to a good start, easily winning the first game. But the mini-sprinter clawed back and the final score was sadly another loss for the chamber (and another 5 setter), 2-3 to Edinvale.

Fate was left in the hands of our Mr. Experience - Steph.

His opponent was another one of those unrelenting sprinters. But Steph wore him out in the first two games, out playing (and thinking) his opponent to take the match 3-1. Another awesome performance from the rock-solid veteran of the side.

Final result - a VERY narrow win for the Chamber 9s!

Final result :12 - 9

7th League vs. Jeppe

Good win for the 7th against Jeppe!

12 -8

At 1 - Duncan played against George Duarte and klapped him 3-0. Duncan displayed some clinical and precise squash and continues with his good form after winning the lower leagues B section.

At 2 –Gerhard played Nelson Ries and lost 2-3. According to John S everybody wins against Nelson. Well, the seagull’s name was Nelson and I lost. Also flirting with some conduct rules on court. Remaining and still the only scribe……..

At 3- Jacques played Tavo Roxo and lost 2-3. Jacques “incredible hulk” was 2-0 up when he got bogged down with cramps…(something to do with not enough space for his calf muscles??)

At 4-Manie played Niel van Jaarsveld and won 3-2. Captain courageous playing out of his socks (and new black prince shoes) to secure the win for Chambers.

Good pizza and beers at Nuno’s to end a good evening.

(2) Feathers got in early but found the going tough against Quinton Woods. Still feeling the after effects of a heavy weekend in Nelspruit, Dave found it difficult to keep going after taking the first game and ran out of legs. (1-3)

(4) Flip up against the touch of Darroll Brent. As an indication of how close the game was, other than the second game, there was only 2 points between the two in three of the four games. Fortunately Flip managed to take the points that counted. (3-1)

(1) Ryan after only a week in 4th league, found himself back in 5ths. Not only back in 5ths but he had to take on the tricky Kevin de Lange. Ryan is nothing if not a fighter and it was a titanic battle that went all the way down to the wire. In the end though, Kevin was able to up his game in the final two games when it counted. (2-3)

(3) Rich up against Quinton’s youngster, Owen, knowing that he needed a 3-1 win to take it outright. This was another tight affair with Rich squeaking the first two games with a two point margin in each. Rich was down and out at 9-13 in the third when some horrible squash from Owen (and a few nicks) gifted Rich the third game and the match (3-0)

A good evening on the courts (and another result reversal from the first round) was topped off with good pizzas at Doppios.

Match result : 11 - 7

4th LEAGUE vs Southern Suburbs

Twas a cold night at the Ice Chamber. Suburbs came up from the far south and immediately started complaining about the temperature – wimps. Even Jeff said it was only a bit cold – but then he did have his army blanket round him.!!

Anyway the Silver Fox went on first, fresh from a successful Nelspruit weekend, playing against Graham Boucher also fresh from Nelspruit. The squash didn’t look fresh however and a dour boring 5-setter ensued with the Fox sneaking home in the 5th for a 3-2 win.

Phil on against a youngster showed how to demoralize the juniors with precision and power and won comfortably in 3 games.

Jeff had a toughie against Rickie who beat him 3-2 in the first round. Jeff went 2-1 up after a titanic 3rd, rested in the 4th only getting 6 points and then looked to be getting on top in the 5th. However young legs prevailed and Rickie won 15-13. Match of the night.

That left Vevek with only winning 1 game for the match. His opponent, Kurt B had been in England for 3 weeks (training at sea-level). Vevek gave him no chance with only 2 points lost in the first game. He then won the last 2 comfortably.

Its always nice to hammer Suburbs

Match result : 14 - 5

3rd LEAGUE vs Parkview

We beat this Parkview side 12-6 in the first round, but got a hiding this time around.

Willem came back from overseas Mon evening and played Tues evening – played first against Henri, started strong but the battery went flat early. Maybe too much doobie in Amsterdam. First game went to 20-18 (I think).

Gary played next against Hendrik – was sitting out due to illness, but then Chris got lost in Welkom, so tried, but also no batteries. Gary managed to win the first game.

Mike played next against Ryan. Needed 3-1 or better for us to still be able to win. Was 2-1 up, but couldn’t hold on.

Francis played last against Kyle. Nothing to play for. Lost the first, but was pretty much in control for the rest. In spite of the huge support Kyle had, he just got a little too tired.

11th LEAGUE vs Edenvale

Once again a great contest against our great rivals. We always have a good match and social interaction with the Edenvale chaps and last night was no exception.

Playing first - Bob at 4 - went down (14/16 and 13/15) then fought back to take the next two 15/8 and 15/9. Just too many unforced errors in the fifth and lost 15/8. Scored more points than his opponent but not in the right games.

Up next - Paddy at 2 - went up two (15/11 and 17/15) only to relax too much and dropped the next two games (11/15 and 11/15). Paddy was serving at 14/13 in the fifth, fluffed his serve (14/14) and then lost the next two points to lose.

Third on was Des at 3 - All heart but having played golf earlier, found his legs, lungs and head were still on the golf course. Uncharacteristically lost 0/3!

Final match was Brian at 1 - As usual, although he hadn't touched a squash racket since the last league game in May, Brian fought every inch of the way, he would rather die on the court than give an inch! This was a mighty tussle also going to five sets with our man pulling it through in the fifth. What a player! Scores 15/9; 13/15; 9/15; 15/12 and 15/5.

Final result - LOST 14 - 7

Final result : 714

10th LEAGUE vs Southern Suburbs

Alas the second half has started in exactly the same way as the first but any way here goes:-

First on was myself at number 3 against Duane. Game one was lost fairly comfortably 15 – 10 with the second a bit closer but still losing 17 – 15. I managed to take the 3rd 15 – 11 but couldn’t keep the momentum up going down 15 – 12 in the fourth.

Scores

10 – 15, 15 – 17, 15 – 11 and 12 – 15

On next was Paul versus Dilin. The first two games went Dilin’s way 15 – 12 and 15 – 8 before Paul rallied to take the third 15 – 13. As in the previous match this proved to be the highlight from a Chamber point of view with game four going to Dilin 15 – 6.

Scores

12 – 15, 8 – 15, 15 – 13 and 6 – 15

Third up was Johan Mare against Garret. I missed the opening two games with the first being quite quick at 15 – 5 down. The second was also lost but a lot closer at 18 – 16 with Johan apparently being ahead in this one. Game three went 15 – 7 again in Garret’s favour.

Scores

5 – 15, 16 – 18 and 7 – 15

Last in to bat was Roger who, unfortunately, never managed to get his game into play against Ockie.

Scores

3 – 15, 8 – 15 and 6 – 15

Match score 2 – 16

Final result : 2 - 16

9th LEAGUE vs UJ

During the first half of the season we were klapped by UJ 16-4. This was the first game of the second half of the season and we were at home. There was no way we were going to get the same treatment.

Well, we got another klap.

Nigel up first against Reedwaan. Reedwaan isn’t exactly built for speed, but his killer drop on the icy Chamber courts was too much to come back against. There were times when I could only watch from mid court as he got hit another murderous shot from somewhere at the back. Even trying to stay calm didn’t help so I’ve resolved to lose my cool at the first opportunity and bring on the poor conduct points. Thought I might’ve had a chance in the third game when the thought processes finally kicked in, but he sealed the game with another cross-court, atom’s breadth from the tin blinder.

Lyal was playing Bradley next and it was looking good in the first as he drilled everything tight down the left hand side of the court. Not quite sure what happened after that, but the wheels fell off and the chassis fell apart. Three services out of court in the second game had Lyal and the peanut gallery cursing. These get-out-of-jail free shots let Bradley back into the game and he took over from there. A rallying period in the fourth game was not enough to bring Lyal back into contention and he went down 1-3.

Brennan was up against a wily Kevin. Brennan lost in three games, but not for lack of running. I think there was more court coverage per point than any sane person would have been able to tolerate. There is the consolation that at least it was a test of fitness. Brennan is known for his epic 5 setter, and, while this was no 5 setter, there was no denying the epic-ness of the game.

Last on was Steph against Allistar, playing for personal victory and team pride. Allistar was a bit of a runner himself, but Steph was on fire – most of the time. Allistar’s loose shots were given what they deserved and Steph played some shots so tight they melded with the wall. The fourth game was a bit of a seesaw affair with Steph being comfortably ahead and then letting Allistar come back to 13 all. Then 14 all. Then 15 all. But Steph’s BMT was greased and working and he clinched the game with some great play.

So, no whitewash but a drubbing none the less. If we want a shot at the title, it’s going to have to improve

Summary

Nigel vs Reedwaan lost 0-3: 12-15, 8 -15, 15-17

Lyal vs Bradley lost 1-3: 15-9, 12-15, 10-15, 12-15

Brennan vs Kevin lost 0-3 : 6-15, 12-15, 8-15

Steph vs Allistar won 3-1 : 15-12, 15-9, 9-15, 17-15

8th League “A” vs. Edenvale

Wednesday witnessed a cold new start to the 2nd half of the season, and some hot performances on court!

The “A” team was up against Edenvale at home – on Court 1, with the snot sniveling “B” team (propped up by George) playing next door, rowdier than ever.

On first, at # 1, none other than the increasingly formidable Mark (the “German”) van Niekerk, went the distance against a tough pugilist and very intimidating squash player, Clinton. One up, then one down, Mark stepped up a gear or two in the last 2 games and sent his opponent packing with a fine 3-2 victory. It helps to dominate the “T” Mark;

Up next Bruce (“marathon man”) at # 2, takes to the court against a well skilled but visibly rusty opponent, Jeremy from Eton. No marathon for Bruce this time as he cruises to a 3-0 win in no time. The highlight of this match was the brilliant umpiring (no it wasn’t George);

Paul (Doc) Fallon up next at # 3 against the quieter of the Lawrenson brothers, Terry, a former number one who is nursing an injury which was debilitating enough to allow Paul to prance through this match quite quickly and efficiently. Another 3-0 on the card and the match in the bag already!

At # 4, Nic Papa then took on veteran Peter in an attempt to make it a clean sweep. Managed to squeak a clinical 3-0 win and have a light (lob & drop) practice at the same time.

A “couple” of beers and some very tasty pizza (large for Chamber and small for Edenvale) were enjoyed by all at Dopio.

Results:

  1. Mark van Niekerk v. Clinton Nel: (3-2) 15-12; 13-15; 9-15; 15-7; 15-9;
  2. Bruce Bydawell v. Jeremy Eton: (3-0) 15-6; 15-13; 15-12;
  3. Paul Fallon v. Terry Lawrenson: (3-0) 15-10; 15-6; 15-8;
  4. Nick Papa v. Peter Wilson: (3-0) 15-5; 15-12; 15-10.

(4) Flip played a youngster, Armin, who had a penchant for warming up 10 shots to every one that Flip was able to hit. Warmup to Armin. By the end of the warmup Flip was mad as a snake and in the actual match it was payback time. Flip took it easily in three. Match to Flip. (3-0)

(2) Chris came up against Aiden Hannon. In the first two it looked like a mismatch with Chris snatching his shots and perfecting the art of hitting the tin with unerring accuracy. The fluency came back to Chris’ game in the third and slowly the tide turned. Anyone who knows Aiden will know that as Chris came back into the game so the chirps and challenges to the marker increased. It was all to no avail as Chris took the fifth. (3-2)

(3) Rich took on Kuben. The first was an even affair with Rich making mistakes at will. Fortunately his opponent outdid him to sneak it 16-14. The second was as close but this time Kuben pipped it 15-13. Rich finally clicked into gear and the next two were taken with relative ease. (3-1)

(1) With the match already wound up, new number 1, Dave Peacock, plumbed the depths of the 5th league against Gordon allowing our previous no 1 (Ryan) to ply his trade in the 4th league. It was whispered that Dave wanted to improve his win/loss percentage in 5th league but it proved to be anything but a breeze. Dave was completely out of it in the first two games but the third was a lot closer affair. It could have gone either way but Gordon did just enough to sneak it. (0-3)

Overall 12-6 and a welcome reversal of the first half 7-12 loss.

4th LEAGUE vs Pirates (& P..cock)

Phil and Vevek went on first and both lost as predicted 0-3. Their opponents (both Mike’s) are far too good for 4th league.

The Silver Fox then took an easy 3-0 to leave Ryan with no pressure and only having to win 3-0 against Arthur Dyson to force a points count. Having promoted Ryan into 4th lge for the first time after numerous stunning displays this season, his team-mates were confident.

Ryan cruised through the first and got to 14-11 up in the second with Arthur complaining about a tight Hammy. A few amazing boasts later and Arthur had pulled the game out of the fire and won the match. Ryans resolve weakened after that and the last 2 games were lost also

3rd LEAGUE vs Old Eds

2nd Half of the season kicked off with a home game against Old Eds on a cold night. Willem is off gallivanting in Europe.

Mike played first against Ishaam, had a good win, 3-0.

Francis played next against Craig who had amazing shots and was 2-0 up before Francis slowed him down. Francis came through and won.

Gary played next against Rob and got a hiding. (He beat Willem in the first round, but I suppose that’s no excuse.)

Jeff played last against their ringer, Mike Bester, and went 2-0 up. But that’s when Mike warmed up too and Jeff couldn’t finish.

So it went to a points count and we lost by 1 point!
