#World Squash Day
Chamber Exiles Squash Club Covid Regulations
Chamber has been approved and Squash is allowed back. Please see the rules and such at the Club. You will need to sign in and practice social distancing. Don't be "That Guy" and ruin it for all of us.
See below and attached. The club is authorized to open from 1st August (all league players to train and play) and 15th August (all social players).
There are of course stringent protocols that we will have to follow, namely:
· Deep cleaning of complex before reopening.
· Access to the club will be for members only until further notice.
· Members must fill in an Indemnity form and Covid-19 screening form the first time they go back to the club.
· Court bookings must be made in advance – online for a record for the appointed Covid Official. (Julie Shannon)
· Face masks must be worn on entry and only removed once you enter the court to warm up and play.
· Sanitize hands on entry before using access keypad.
· Temperature must be screened on entry and the Screening and tracking register completed every time you play.
· Sanitize on entry and in between games (2 hands-free dispensers will be situated at the entrance and between courts 1 & 2).
· No spectators are allowed.
· The change rooms can’t be used except for the toilets.
· No alcohol will be allowed in the complex.
· All surfaces will be sanitized every day and members will be urged to sanitize between and after all games.
· Do not wipe your hands on the walls or glass backs.
· Use your own towel to remove sweat from floor and your body etc. if required.
· Personal water bottles are required as there will be no glasses available.
· Social distancing must be adhered to if there are many players at the club.
· Covid-19 warning notices will be displayed all round the complex
· The club will close at 8h00pm sharp (so players can get home before curfew).
All forms to be completed (Indemnity, Covid-19 screening and the Screening and tracking register) will be available on a table inside the foyer entrance together with a hand held thermometer.
These protocols will be hard to enforce and we will rely heavily on the members to be responsible, sensible and adhere to the above as Covid-19 is not going to disappear overnight. If we are found to be flouting the protocols our authorisation to open could be revoked.

3rd LEAGUE A vs Wanderers
First
match of the season we played Wanderers away, pretty much same faces.
We were short our strong nos 1 & 2 so Gary and Richard has to step
up. Both were hammered. But as least we had wins at 3 & 4.
First
up was Vevek against a new youngster, Nick. Good runner, hit the ball
well but a bit loose and lacking experience. Vevek worked him out early
and won the first comfortably. Vevek went well up in the 2nd but then started playing his opponents game and ended up losing that game. And the next. Vevek came back and won the 4th. The 5th was a hard close game which could have gone either way. Vevek managed to win it 17-15 or somewhere there.
Next was Richard against Eric. Maybe the anti-biotics were still in Richard’s system but Eric won fairly comfortably.
Then
Gary played Mo, their strong no 1 who was playing 3 at the beginning of
last year and Vevek beat from 0-2 7-14 down. Mo was too strong for Gary
and it was over in under half an hour.
Last
up our new team member Andrew Fourie against Bruce. They both play the
same type of game and it was a monster 5 setter with Andrew winning the 5th also 17-15 or something like that.
And then we were forced to eat pizza and drink giant beers.

4th LEAGUE A vs Chamber B
The local derby was a 2-2 draw but the A team win on games.
No
mention will be made of Allan and Danie’s match short of saying the
markers and referees (about 4 altogether) had a hard time!!!!!

Kobus having hurt his leg jogging got crushed 0-3

Nick won 3-2 (despite the attrociously slippy court)

5th LEAGUE B vs. Jeppe
Another team of ringers, 3 of Jeppe players dropping down from last years winning 4th lge team. What is the league coming to!!!
Ian lost 3-2 from 2-0 up
BigG lost 3-0

Brennan won 3-2

7th LEAGUE A vs Modderfontein
First
Match of the season. At #3, Gabriel took on Ian. A see-saw match, Gabe
taking the first, Ian the second, Gabe the third and Ian the fourth. The
fifth was titanic with the final score being 20-18 to our new recruit
to 7th, Gabriel. Welcome. Great start to the season and the captain spoke to Gabes later requesting shorter matches in the future!
Next
Captain Peter LR at #2 took on Vashan. Pete wore him out in the first,
scoring twice as many points. Vashan was buggered and never recovered
from the Peter onslaught, losing 3-0.
Mike
played Tanya at #4. He was requested by the Captain to show no mercy
for the women! Mike listened to the Captain and won the first two.
However, Mike’s attention wandered (can’t think where!) and he lost the
third. To give himself a birthday present he pulled finger and won the
fourth easily, romping to an 8-0 lead which he never surrendered. Thus,
winning the match 3-1, securing a win for the team and maintaining a
100% record in his 64th year.
Fantastic start to the season with a 16 pointer.
Times are a changing, no meal. Another tradition bites the dust.
Mike and Tanya having a celebratory birthday drink. Now he knows where his mind wandered in the fourth!
We wish Dave a swift recovery from a recent operation and George all the luck with his replacement hip operation on 5th April. We sincerely hope that it will improve his squash for the 2019 season!

The 2018 Handicap Touranment - By Gary D'illy
To those of you who could not attend the finals last night, I must attest to the fact that you missed out on an evening of spectacular spirit. The fact that our two most handicapped players reached the final and play-off respectively is testament to their remarkable abilities as squash players. I tip my hat to you both.
Ian had an uncharacteristic slump of form at the final hurdle and could not seemingly play his normal game against the unconventional style of play dished out by our poetically expletive-filled Michael Mayer. Michael has shown a remarkable degree of growth in his game in the last year and he managed to get out his great shout of joy at winning 3rd place in the main draw.
I watched with amazement as Phil and Marcus fought out a never-ending battle of attrition where both participants were sucking up oxygen like it was as rare a commodity as rain in Cape Town. A beautiful game of squash was witnessed where Marcus showed how hungry he was to get back into his game after a year long recovery from injury and he managed to put Phil to the sword and bend
the knee.
A deserving winner of the Plate - Well played Marcus!
I never saw the Helena vs. Gabriel game but understand that she not only represented her gender but her indomitable spirit shone through as she managed to put yet another notch in her belt of victories at Chamber Exiles.
The final was a true spectacular to behold as we witnessed what a “dead man walking” looks like!
We were all convinced that David Hamilton was going to have a heart attack as he was being outplayed in splendiferous style but Mister UnKind. Heart attack Hamilton still managed to fight for points here and there that kept him in contention to play the only trump card at his disposal - TIME!!! The highlight of the evening, for me, was the good grace of David Kind who despite winning the battle, lost the war on the most marginal of time errors , a mere 5 seconds. I am sure the nightmares will plague him for a while still.
His grace in accepting the decision was one that will win my most respectful admiration for as long as I am around. I was proud to know that this man is a member of our club and represents who and what we are. Without a word of complaint he accepted the ruling and shook the hand of the victor victorious! So, despite his “wtf” comment to John on hearing his handicap, he proved himself a worthy man to take on the challenge and come out the other side a hero in my books. Well done David KIND!!!! A Kinder man we have not seen. Mister Hamilton will have to take the rest of the week off to recover and cherish his moment of glory as I am sure his handicap in 2019 might be a hurdle too high to claw his way over. Other notable observations of the night were the manner in which Jae Lee marked the final - his firm hand and decisive calling was admirable.
The other upshot of the evening was seeing Ed Upton wearing his well earned prize of a Chamber Sweater with pride - they might not let him back into the Alberton club wearing it but that’s his problem not ours.
Our thanks must go out to whoever provided the snacks which kept the babalaas (sp?) at bay as we all slurped down the free ale.
A special thanks to Kobus who is now our resident biltong boer and is open to accepting orders for his deliciously tasty treat. Now we have a beer brewer and a biltong boer helping us keep Chamber Exiles a “local is lekker” kinda place!!!
Thanks to Ryan for keeping time in the final and being official photographer on the night.
The biggest travesty of justice the entire evening was the fact that Marcus Meyer’s better half ( sorry I don’t know her name) drew the raffle winner for the night and of all the underserving sluts in our squash kingdom - Digby Chapman - of all people, was pronounced the winner of the TV so generously donated by Warren. We thank you for your altruistic act to help raise funds for the club Warren and please accept our condolences for being Gerry’s brother-in-law (you could have done so much better)!
Well done John for another successful social tournament where we get to mix things up a little and play our compatriots from a variety of playing abilities on a more-or-less level playing field.
