5th League

5th League  vs Old Eds

The King played royal squash to win 3-0
Richard won 3-1
Gavin lost 1-3 to an on-fire Dennis Bass (he’s either hot or cold and tonight he was hot)

We snuck in by a few points

Silver Fox lost 1-3 (with no excuse this time)
Richard lost 1-3
Duncan saved our blushes and won 3-2
Ron lost 1-3 after an attack of weekend floor laying

A sad result which knocked us off the top of the league

6th League B

6th League B vs UJ

Phil vs Jamie playing at number 4
A slightly more skilled opponent with a spot more energy. After a 1 all warm up the third was a marathon of note. 17 -19 to UJ. Great to watch. His opponent was very friendly with the grid iron tin but not enough to make it an easy game. After some interesting rally's it appears as though the game was thrown. Phil took the 4th. It appears as though the last game became the game to win. Phil came back from an unbelievable  9 match points 6 - 14 to lose 15 – 17.

Mark started strong with some long rally's but his opponents took the first 13- 15. Mark came back strong in the second to take it 15 - 7 And continued the trend through to the third to win 3-1

Brennan played a lazy player, who had great drops but coil not get to any of Brennan's drops.  Brennan won 3-2

Bruce played what seems like a 3rd league player who played provincials. As hard as he tried he went down 0-3

Went down to games but UJ took it by one game.

Overall result: Lost 8 – 11

6th League B vs Suburbs

Last time SS got the better of us in some tight games, but at least we got some chicken out of it. This time there would be no chicken, but it remained to be seen whether we could turn the tide.

Bruce vs Dilin: a game worthy of the number 1 billing. Two runners who weren’t going to give any quarter. They warmed up the Chamber courts with friction alone. They both had shaven heads – one suspects to combat wind resistance – and all one saw was the glint of neon on porcelain. Bruce looked a bit rusty going down in the first, but cruised back in the second. Was in front in the third, but was pipped after seeing through some fantastic rallies. All the running took its toll and Bruce looked a bit peaked in the fourth and final. Entertaining despite the 1-3 loss.

Phil vs Ockie: Phil started with fire in his eyes and thunder in his swing. Poetic yes, but so was his first game and he cleaned up. Second game was a bit of a reversal and Ockie controlled it  start to finish. Third game was appropriately close, but went in the right direction and Phil emerged with more points. Phil was pumped in the fourth so it was down to the last. Alas, Ockie was on supreme form to take the match. Lost 2-3 pressure on…

Lyal vs : The good Dr White took a leaf out his medical colleagues’ book and was surgical in his squash. Some smart squash was played to put him 2 games up. Would he continue and finish clinically to give us a shot at victory, or would he be anaesthetised by the oppo? Nope, the doctor closed it out – diagnosis: jolly good. Won 3-0.

Brennan vs : I didn’t get to see this game, but judging by the scoreline, the first three were veritable hum-dingers with Brennan trailing 1-2. Then he pushed the fitness button and came through strongly for the team to score a famous victory. Won 3-2.

This gave the team a win by 1 game over the log leaders. Sterling stuff.

Overall result: Won 11 - 8

7th A League

7th A League vs. Wendywood

The dead of winter and the hunter-gatherers from Wendywood come down to the lowlands near water for their next kill. Top of the food chain these real life hunters are not just looking for trophies but for a blood and guts feast.
-
Like any good hunter they check out the captain (with his feeble excuse for a pitiful state having been without electricity for two days) and decide to take him out first and hang his head out as a severe warning to the others. Billy (the kid but older Schorn brother) comes out hitting hard and has me scrambling – some wise words from doctor Paul at the break and I manage to play some shots in the second and the playing fields are leveled but then a hail of bullets in the third and fourth and some hopelessly pathetic rushed play sees me lose valuable points and then Billy takes me out.
- -
George jumps into action and immediately throws his hunter Alec off balance but then like a rabbit caught in the headlights seems unable to move for the rest of the first game. Then suddenly George realizes there is a game on and comes back fighting like a wounded animal and takes the second. Some sublime skill from Alec with some beautifully caressed drops and boasts sees him through the third with our rabbit George left standing and staring yet again. Now a fired up George has a speedy charge at survival and his double-handed backhand crosscourt reverse drops are flying like a chicken losing its feathers in a fowl fight and he takes the fourth forcing the showdown in the fifth – but all sound and fury signifying nothing. George has to hang his head and bleeding hand in defeat.
- - -
Joe the head-hunter plays a power game with the remarkable ability to fetch and play an awkwardly styled short game that leaves Paul at a bit of a loss at the end of the first without seeing much of the action. A slight change in game plan helps Paul put up a fair challenge in the second with better domination of the T. The third sees a magnificent rally where superb shots where met with masterful fetching and topped by even better athleticism. Unfortunately to no avail – the picking up of several thundering low and hard drives only delays the inevitable and Paul has to lie down and succumb to the dominance of one species over another.
- - - -
Every good hunting story has at least one episode of “the one that got away” – and the lead character in this tale is own strong-wristed Steph. He saw what was happening to the rest of his herd and said “bugger-this-for-a-sorry-tale-of-woe” and came out firing with controlled aggression and pin-point accuracy. The hunter Johan was a bit taken aback and came back at Steph in the second and then it was all out war in the third which had some see-sawing at the finish. Then we witnessed a surprising turn as the hunters started routing for Steph because all they wanted now was a good chow-down and some wetting of the whistles. Steph took the fourth and salvaged some personal pride – team pride and team points.
- - - - -
Losing 13-6 – we were taken out but not yet hung out to dry like the biltong that they usually make from their hunting expeditions! So, in conclusion, this was not a completely embarrassing result against the top hunting dogs who just so happen to be, a nice, down-to-earth bunch of guys that I would be happy to play again!

7th A League vs. Jeppe

The misery continues unabated.

George, the banker, at 4 against Anton did his usual thing and won. This deluded us into thinking we could get a good result. The rest of the Jeppe team arrived a bit late and we should have claimed the points.

Paul at 1 against Neil, same match-up as first round, with same result, outplayed to go down 0 – 3.
Steph at 3 against Linkie, Neil’s wife, also same as first round, this time with a worse result, totally outplayed 0-3.
So Karel at 2 against Vaughn had it all to do and he did his damnedest. Came back from 2 love down, with a 21-19 third game win, levelled at 2 all and then just missed out in the fifth.
All this against an incredibly noisy background from sixth league playing Suburbs next door, Brennan apparently frustrating a very loud opponent. So noisy that Whispering George could hardly make himself heard marking Karel’s match.

We left Vaughn commiserating with Karel in the pub. The other Jeppe-ites had lame excuses and went home, so we joined the snot snivellers (7B) at Doppios.

Result:
Paul                       0              -              3              Neil van Jaarsveld
Karel                     2              -              3              Vaughn
Steph                    0              -              3              Linkie
George                 3              -              1              Anton

Overall result: Lost 5 - 13

7th B League

7th B League vs. Modderfontein

Nick lost 2-3
David lost 0-3
Stratford won 3-1
Vince won 3-2

Overall result: Lost 8 – 11

7th B League vs. Wits

First up Nick against a youngster he had beaten 3-0 in the first round. He started badly going down 2-0 but changed tactics and pulled back to 2 all but in the 5th he could not contain his opponent and lost 2-3.
Next up Peter F just back from injury and a hike in the KNP with Mike Hunt where plenty of drinking and eating (especially potatoes) was done and whilst he kept up with his opponent to 10 all in the 3 games he could not finish off and lost 0-3.
Dave the only winner of the night went up 2-0 and then tried hard to lose the match but to his surprise he won the 5th and the match 3-2.
Last up Vince who came up against a strong opponent but Vince had the game to outfox him which he nearly did in the first game but lost 18-16, won the 2nd and again nearly took the 3rd but was out powered in the 4th.

Overall result: Lost 6 - 14

9th LEAGUE vs Wanderers

If anybody saw some ossewa wheels laying around, please let me know, because the wheels come off for the three Boertjies and an Englishman team against Wanderers club. There we were, well rested after the break and some even played in the Lower league tournament during the break. Just to be on the cutting edge.Ready for the war against the English to the north side of Joburg we were, the uppity Wanderers in their fancy panzy club, more lights burning than what Escom can produce in a year. Boere oorlog van voor af, we are going to trap them !!!!But no, stop die bus. Full stop. Bad, bad performance. A teeny weeny support in terms of ---   they tried.  But that’s were it ended. Results, with no need to elaborate, were. Chambers    = 0Wanderers   = 4 Report regrettably written by Chris Ps. The Captain was the only player that scored one winning game. Small mercy !!Overall result: Won 1 - 16

10th LEAGUE vs Edenvale 06

On first at No 3 – Keith – Had two quick easy games to go 2- zip up as their first “ringer”, Murray, got rid of the cobwebs in his joints after not having played squash for some time (I think in 2nd or 3rdleague!) and looked set to cruise home. But, Dear Reader, the “ringer” then got back into rhythm and poor old Keith went to pieces and lost the next three games. Amazing! How many times do we see this happen on a squash court?

Next up at No 1 – Brian – Playing a good youngster, Michael, a regular in their team, but who was a little nervous. Brian, in true Swiegs fashion took no prisoners and whipped him 3-0.

On third at position No 2 was Des. Also playing a “ringer”, Jason, who hadn’t been on a court for some time, Des had one of those “on” nights where he conscentrated on the task ahead and used his “powerplay” method in which he blasted his unfit opponent off the court to win comfortably 3-0.

Playing last at the difficult spot of No4 – Bob. Playing one of the regulars in this Edenvale team, Quintin, who he has played a number of times before and never lost to, had a fairly easy night and cruised to a 3-0 win.

Their Capitan, Colin, had flu so didn’t play but did mark all the games. Nice guy.

RESULT -  WON – 14 -3.

Had a pleasant dinner at Eira Moura and good banter (pity not barter) with Olga, the imported Russian waitress.....

2nd LEAGUE vs Pirates (St Johns)

We played Pirates away last night – who are actually St. John’s school boys. Their no. 2 is Dean Maxton – Phil’s son. We had to play at the their school, it was freezing and they only had cold showers for afterwards. These private school boys are tough.

Willem lost to Bradley Dial 1-3
Robbie lost to Dean Maxton 2-3
Gary won 3-1
Vevek won 3-1.

We won 11-8.

Overall resultWon 11 - 8

4th League vs Old Eds

Linda,Shannon- vs. Chris,van Heeswijk-
Not much to be said about this match, other than that I was soundly beaten by a better woman. It’s definitely in the Plumstead genes.
15-11 15-8 15-6

Glenn,Lazarus- vs. Andrew,McKeaveney-
Returning from an extended trip to the USA, Andrew came up against an in form Glenn. Too many mistakes in the first, and despite being ahead in the second, could not finish, and eventually lost the second out of sheer frustration with a “freshie”. Tried hard in the third, but was just too loose and made too many errors.
            15-7 19-17 15-11

Dave,Peacock- vs. Quentin Brett,Tomaselli-
Playing last, Dave had to win 3-0 for a points count, so no pressure!! Won the first two comfortably, and looked to be in command in the third, but Quentin had other ideas (assisted by a dodgy let which should have been a stroke) and he finally won the match for Old Eds by winning that game 16-14. The fourth was comfortable for Dave who kept up his excellent record this year of just one loss.
15-8 15-9 14-16 15-8

John,Shannon- vs. Dave,Lazer-
On first, and having agreed to fill in nursing a sore back (after a last minute shuffle caused by a 1st league player with a sore back!!) John, Chairman’my’chairman was just too tricky for Dave Laser with his lobs and other tricky shots. Comfortable 3-0 win to get the team off to a great start.
15-5 15-6 15-11

Match Result 6-9, although we won on points 151-147!! Retired to Dopio Zero for pizza’s

Overall result: Lost 6 - 9

5th League vs Bryanston

Matches against this Bryanston team have always been tough but on this occasion, even without the inspirational captain playing (nursing sore back – see above), the team rose to the challenge and handed out a whipping of note. Match of the night was Richard against David (recent Lower leagues B-section winner) with the smart money heavily on David. Richard had a blinder however and snuck in 3-2

Richard won 3-2
Gavin won 3-0
Fergus won 3-0
Ron won 3-0

So at the winter break, the team leads the log by 8 points

Overall result: Won 16 - 2

6th League B vs Chamber A

Some comfortable wins over our less fancied “A” side during the last 2 years have proved dangerous and a sense of complacency has crept in. It’s clear that the senior Wrinklies team has been hurt by the trend and they sent a battle call out to the old age homes and bingo halls to cobble together a team clearly focused (with rheumy, cataritic eyes) on salvaging the remnants of pride and dignity. So, a chilly Chamber reception saw the skirmish begin.

Early game had Gerhard vs Nigel with age winning over vigour. There wasn’t much to be done against an on-form Gerhard who was dropping in Haywardesque fashion. Nigel not really in this game except for short lived surge of brilliance in the 3rd game. Lost 1-3.

Mark arrived next and was quick to take the court in a self-appointed 4th position against a resurgent Manie. Only wrists the size of tree trunk could explain the flick/drives that Manie achieved. These saw the ball disappear from the front of the court and simultaneously reappear at the back. Tough one for Mark and he had little chance. Lost 0-3.

Then it was onto the epic match of the evening – Bruce, claiming he was rusty after avoiding the courts in favour of Comrades training, was slotted in to play against Gavin. And a rusty opening game had Gavin closing out the first game without much fuss. But this gave Bruce a chance to warm up and he went into the next two games firing. Chasing down everything in sight – way past the point where a reasonable bloke would have given up. So it was Bruce 2-1 up when Gavin staged a comeback of his own, using wiliness, cunning and sneak to gain an entertaining win for the gallery. Well, his side of the gallery anyway. Lost 2-3.

Speaking of deviousness, cunning and artful guile, the next match was between Brennan and Stu. It followed the same pattern as the preceding Bruce/Gavin saga with Stu taking the first, Brennan the next two and then a comeback by Stu. Despite heroic efforts by Brennan, Stu managed to avoid several heart attacks and keep moving long enough to gain a 3-2 victory.

The only match which went the right way was the ‘friendly’ between Lyal and Louie. Lyal has made a recovery from his Vespa enforced absence and pipped Louie. We then had to put up with the victory cries of the “A” team while scoffing Doppio fare. We’ll have to wait til next year for the rematch.

Overall result: Lost 5 - 16

9th LEAGUE vs Wendywood

We came second against them in the first round. But as the Boertjies ( and some Ingelsmanne in between) are made of true grit (kortbroeke en v-nek suntans) this mishap is not going to happen again. We will fight them in the trenches, we will fight them in ------- aaaag whatever.
So we were ready in that cold fridge of a home club, to do battle.

Player 1 at position 1.
Chambers – Anthony   = 1  vs   Wendywood –  Pankaj   = 3
As every week, Anthony had to warm up first and that cost him the first game. The second game was him playing his better shots, down the wall, some well placed boasts and using his lank body to outstretch the smaller and shorter opponent.  One game each.
O ja, by the way, we  better not say or write any bad stuff about the opponents, we were informed by the Wendywood bunch that they like the clubs website (a lot) and they also read the match reports.
So, the very nice, stocky but well built and of orient origin, Pankaj did not like the aggressive retaliation. With the prowess of an Indian Bangle (Bengal) tiger, he stalked, manoeuvred and with hard hitting shots down the wall he had Anthony at a loss. And that was also the outcome for us, first game down.

Player 2 at position 2
Chambers –  Chris       = 0  vs   Wendywood --  James   = 3
Complaining about the cold courts, James was warming up furiously.  And with the same warming up temperament, he was like a demon possessed when the game began. His poor opponent, although fighting back, had no answers. A fair and square loss for Chambers.

Player 3 at position 3
Chambers --  Kobus     = 3  vs   Wendywood --  Steve    = 0
Now, this Boertjie takes no prisoners. Steve although he claims he last played ten years ago, was no slouch,  he knew how to hit the ball. But Kobus gave him no chance. Up and down, criss cross and all over the court was too much for Steve.  He tried in the third but Kobus (the Boertjie with the sixties pony tail) toyed with him, gave him 12 points and then concluded with a win.  Lekker Kobus !!!!!.

Player 4 at position 4
Chambers -- Roger       = 3   vs   Wendywood  -- Bhavesh = 1
Roger still had Vancouver and Canada in his legs. He says it is summer there but still colder that our (cold) winter.  So with that frame of mind he lost in the first – of course. Talked himself into losing. But the second was a different kettle of fish, Roger started believing in himself.  Take that on the nose you Wendywoodian, I can move and I can play the shots, he said to himself. Brother Pankaj came over to support Bhavesj and to advise and coach his ‘brother’ but to no avail. Roger the rocket was on the move. Wham bam thank you Wendywood, come back next year. Not bad for a soutie, the good captain will keep him in the team.

End result is          - Chamber =2 vs Wendywood  = 2

Now that is a dilemma, and it was down to the count ------------------------------------------breathless moments, cel phone calculators and bribery on the side.
And the outcome ----------------------------------------Chambers WON by points. .
Were you worried ??? not me, I believe in the Boertjies and Souties 9thleague team
Thanks all.

Overall result: Won 9 - 7
