CHAMBER OLD BOYS vs CHAMBER NEW BOYS

Chamber Squash the winner!

This squash match, billed as the “Chamber Old Boys versus Chamber New Boys” was played and eaten and drunk on 7th May 2008 rolling over (literally for some) to the morning of the 8th. It was the brainchild of a Mr. Andy Barnes who wanted to go out with a bang (keep dreaming) and several memories (including a team photo of the Ken Raine, Andy Barnes, Laurie Moth and John Barton; all with wigs; representing Chamber’s only international tour to Botswana) of his playing days at the Chamber of Mines Sports Club squash section, and latterly the Chamber Exiles Squash Club prior to his departure to somewhere near Port Alfred. Two sides of a baker’s dozen were assembled so that a definitive result could be forthcoming; ha! ha! As per usual the fidelity of the Old Boys under the captaincy of Andy Barnes came through and the entire team pitched up plus a couple of retired squashies, notably Ken Raine and Vernon Ward of the hippy, hippy, (this new one works wonders!) shake, shake fame. The New Boys under the captaincy of Dave Peacock pitched up with one less and the chap that let him down had obviously Fall on (spot the attempted pun!) or rather off the bus.

Anybody recognise these reprobates??

Matches commenced on several courts simultaneously. Michael took on the George and lost despite using a well known slowing down tactic of driving the ball up the opponents **se which should have slowed him down but only had the reverse effect of increasing the chatter on court (lawyers must be paid by the word) and resolution to win. On the adjacent court Steph was wupping Dave who had prevented us from naming his team the Young Boys. Incidentally these two former old boys Steph and Mike started 15th league together in 1980.

On the back courts the well dressed, yellow jacketed and dark skirted Glynis was trying her best against Andile. The “nearly as light as Glynis” version pulled off the win and shared that another 10 kilos will do the trick!

The Gavin’s from both sides split the spoils, Gavin B taking out Andy and Gavin M losing to Digby respectively. In a New Boy fashion; a sign of the times; it was noted that there was little respect from Bowes for the departing and captaining Andy.

John Worwood having rested his walking stick at the entrance eased past Paul and Laurie likewise over Graham, game-wise and hair-wise.

Paul, self appointed Liar dice champion, took out battling Manie with the same score as Ron against Gavin with a few heart stopping shots.

Whilst Chris was demolishing the strutting Peacock on the glass backs, court 4 gallery was heavily populated watching a typical John Shannon match. The other reason for the crowd could have been that it was close to the bar! A shag*ed (thanks for the name loan Ron) John was down and out against a Ryan - oops was that a drop shot –Chegwidden but pulled back to 2 all and for once didn’t scrape a 3-2 victory.

John Schulkins’ opponent Paul Fallon didn’t pitch and the captains decided not to include the walkover in the overall score (very sporting Andy). The last match on court 5 (the one with the new door hinges) was played between Fergus and Richard. The guile, style, finesse and class of Fergus nearly prevailed over the drifting concentration of Richard losing in a tight five setter.

So the overall match was drawn 6 matches all and 26 games all and rumour has it, but the score sheet cannot be found, the points were also even!

The obligatory team photo was taken on court 4, after dragging from the ladies’ changing rooms (lack of hot water in the men’s, dodgy reason!) one Fergus, complete with bulging towel. The prize giving was presided over by our Chairman who presented the “Andy Barnes” trophy to the joint winning captains and Andy lay down the gauntlet for a repeat in 2009, venue Port Alfred?

The traditional Chamber Tequila toast was ably demonstrated by 3 Old Boys and followed by a shabby effort from the New Boys. More practises required and how does Digby talk and do the drink/lemon/salt thing at the same time?

A super, memorable evening was rounded off with a sumptuous chicken curry meal and more drinks.

The liar dice were then retrieved from the depths of the bar cupboards, last having seen the light of day many years ago. The less said the better from here on but rumour has it that the three presentations given by Fergus to his board the following morning were incomprehendable.

Message from the Chairman

The week before the last league match, the inaugural Chamber Old Boys vs Chamber New Boys challenge was held. This was the brainchild of Andy Barnes who, after 28 years of Chamber service (with a couple of breaks here and there) has departed with Helen for the charms of Port Alfred. I would like to thank Andy for all the work and enthusiasm he has put into Chamber Squash over the years both at the Old Sports Club and the new Exiles Club. This evening at the club was a huge success and will be held on a annual basis from here on (in memory of Andy). Apologies to Flip van Antwerpen and anybody else we missed off the Old Boys list. Thanks to Michael Hunt for the report below.

Finally, well done to all the Chamber players who played in the SA National Championships last week at the Wanderers, especially to Lisa Maxton – Lisa (at the tender age of 17) winning the Girls Under 19 championship – a fantastic result.

In the over 50’s Phil Maxton (at the even more tender, or should I say sore, age of 50) lost in the final of the 50-55 event. Ron Hagger finished 3rd after losing to Phil in the semis and Dave Peacock tried hard.

In the 45-50 age group, I lost in the plate final, Jeff Davidson lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual winner John van Heeswijk, and Gary Alter won the Consolation plate (his kids were apparently VERY impressed when Gary told them this excitedly).

Lastly Paul Loake finished somewhere in the tournament (this is an achievement for Paul – finishing I mean).

11th LEAGUE vs Alberton

Not pretty for 11th league - played top of the log team Alberton and got a 0-16 hiding.

P1: Graeme 0-3

P2: Johan C 0-3

P3: Roger 0-3

P4: Keith 0-3

Final result 0-16

10th LEAGUE vs Jeppe

This week’s match against Jeppe saw not only the wheels coming off, but also the engine falling out, leaving us with only a rusting chassis. Our bid to end the first half of the league was thwarted at the last hurdle. Initially we arrived at Jeppe with no opposition team in sight. Just before the 15 minute grace period was up, two of their team members arrived, with the others following later – pity, we could have used the whitewash…

The long weekends hadn’t done our squash any favours. This week featured a reshuffled team due to sickness and other factors.

No. 1 Nigel vs Paul: I was shuffled up the order to play first and get the evening under way. Turned out to be a mistake (on my part) as I was outclassed by the hard hitting Paul and went down in three despite some decent rallies. Too many unforced mistakes. So the pressure was immediately on the team.

No. 2 Phil A vs Graeme: Phil’s opponent only arrived late, on the brink of forfeiting his game. In the first game it looked as if he shouldn’t have bothered arriving because Phil took it with no trouble. Then the game swung 180 degrees as Graeme won the next two games with Phil struggling to find a good length and chasing the ball all over the court. Phil pulled back to win the fourth game with some great reaction shots from both players and the lengthy rallies beginning to tell. So it was down to the fifth and that game went first one way then the other eventually seeing both players on 7-7. A mishit and a cruel bounce off a serve saw Phil losing a good, tough match. Phil ended up with more points but fewer games.

No. 3 Tom vs Vaughn: Tom was playing down the order from his usual No. 1 spot due to a persistent cold that saw his mobility around the court severely reduced. Without the running game he struggled and went down in three. It must be said though, that his opponent had the luck with him and a number of mishits ended up as perfect drops. We’ll take care of him on the return leg.

No. 4 Steph vs ???: The one shining light in the team. Steph was taking it easy at number 4 for the evening. Didn’t start well though with Steph going down 9-2 in the first. From there on there were few mistakes and Steph made his opponent dig the ball out of the corners as he easily won the next three.

1. Nigel lost 0-3

2. Phil lost 2-3

3. Tom lost 0-3

4. Steph won 3-1

So the dream lies shattered. For now. We’ll have to pick things up in the second half of the season.

Final result 5-13

8th League vs. Edenvale

George goes on against Mark and wonders what’s going on in the first game. Then he decides he is feeling good and plays the cross court, double handed boast, featured in the world squash training manual, page 635 under miscellaneous and uses it to great effect. Next three games in the bag comfortably, only to be greeted with a “sorry no water in the showers”. What was needed is a set of pliers to turn the water on! Apparently Volvo’s don’t carry these spares, at least George’s car, but the tool kit out of a 23 year old Mazda came to the rescue and we all had hot showers.

Orrin, who was sporting a hangover and brought his mother for support beat Paul with a repetitive score line. Paul was up in the third and saved two match points but to no avail. Sad really, as if he had won at least one of the 9-7’s he would have won the rubber. He is looking for any other lefties in the club to help him with his drives down the wall once he has found the wall!

Nic removed his shirt and FNB tie, don’t know why ‘cos he played well below par and was thrashed. After match quote was “I was playing well but not winning any points”. An interesting remark that gets full marks for the latter half but zero marks for the former half. Really Nic we love the optimism.

Last match of the night was Mike who eased the first two games and drifted in the third, staring down the barrel at 3-8. For those that want to read further about the squash brilliance read on and those that do not, miss out the next paragraph.

Back to the game, 3-8; Gert serves from the right box tight into the back corner, receives a delicately balanced lob to the back hand right hand corner which stymies him and a dig type shot is attempted that falls way short of the front wall, game ball saved; 3-8. Mike serves a lofter from the right box, returned down the wall by Gert, the German, returned back down the wall but tighter, cross courted by Gert and Mike running at “Carl Lewis” speed picks up and drops it 1.1mm above the tin รก la Chegwidden style, 4-8. Mike serves down the middle, confuses Gert who recovers to play a weak shot down the middle, returned also tight down the middle, returned to the left court at a good length, driven down the wall by Mike, picked up by Gert and returned with interest but loose which allows Mike to perform one of his trademark backhand cross court “where did that come from” shots; 5-8. The gallery is stunned save a loan encouragement from whispering (can he?) George. Mike attempts a power serve that has the kilowatts of a 5 bar heater under load shedding, returned by Gert with a little more speed, volleyed by Mike, hit back by Gert and this went on for a while, then a good length shot had Gert climbing up the back wall which prompted Mike to drop at the front which was missed hopelessly and the war was not mentioned, 6-8. Could this come back continue, read on. A pretty plain serve is returned with a forehand cross court, which is pushed down the wall to a tremendous “Nick Matthew” length, scrambled back (egg style!) to the front right hand court, dropped cross court, picked up for another drop, then wacked cross court like Mike’s fellow squash playing Englishman, James Willstrop to win the rally, 7-8. The gallery is split, Chamber (jubilant and “can he keep it up”) supporters and Edenvale (extremely quiet and utterly amazed at the tenacity of such an old, grey haired, short legged man) supporters. Shades of “Amr Shabana” come to mind during this rally that was littered with tantalizing boasts, elusive lobs and smashing overheads from Mike with a suite of puny boasts, vague lobs and geekish overheads from Gert to bring the scores level, 8-8. Blow the gallery down and nearly Mike, the kraut (used in the most pleasant manner namely as one of surprise) called for one and yes Mike teased him into submission or rather played with him (not in the biblical sense!) and won with a gracefully positioned forehand half court volley, 9-8. Half the gallery went bananas with praise and adulation and made up for the other half that did not!

The barrel was long at 3-8 down but Mike missed all the bullets and won 9-8. Unfortunately the team lost by one game going down 9-6 but not a bad effort against the league leaders.

Squash Tip.

6ththLeague “B” vs Old Parks

Last match of the first half and we have a bit of catching up to do – somehow we have let that other chamber team streak ahead.

On first Flip at no 4 – playing a youngster who brought his better half to watch him. He started making excuses during the warm up, Flip had no mercy and went on to win in short time 3-0 (tip only bring your better half to watch when you know that you can beat your opponent).

On next captain at no 2 – tough first game winning it 10-8, went on to lose the next two games. This was not good so had to start pulling on the reserves, managed to come from behind and take the 4th. Opponent made plenty mistakes in the 5th giving me a good 3-2 victory.

Dirk on at 3 next – Dirk also had a tough match. Won the first and went down the next two, the third was 0-9. With a mountain to climb Dirk won the next but used all the reserves and lost the fifth. So 2-3 down.

Phillip on at no 1 – well rested from a few weeks on leave. Phillips opponent was being well beaten so decided the only way to go down gracefully would be to feign injury (only kidding). He did hurt something late in the second but Phillip was well in control. 3-0

Not a full house but 14 will do – Result 14 -5

Match result : 14-5

6ththLeague “A”(Astonishingly Good) vs Winchester Hills

Captain Rich took to the court first and nervously defended his 100% win record this season, winning narrowly 3-2

Ron had brought his brain with him this week and demolished his opponent 3-0

Our import from the B team Duncan, then showed that holidays in Europe can be good for your squash and demolished his opponent even more convincingly than Ron

With no pressure on him whatsoever, the Silver Fox, finished off the evening with a 3-1 win - also keeping his 100% record this season.

THE JUGGERNAUT CONTINUES

Match result : 16-3

Match result : 5-16

3rd LEAGUE vs Parkview

Well, the last match of the first half produced a good result; we managed to win 3 out of 4 matches. Willem was sick so Dave generously lent us Trevor, hopefully this didn’t impact negatively on the 5th league team.

Gary played first against an out of form Brenton and won 3-1 (I think the last game was even 9-0).

Trevor played next against Lee Pearson and made it a long 5 setter, but won 3-2 in the end.

Francisco played Tom and only dropped 1 game; so finishes the half with only 1 loss.

Jeff went on last, no pressure, against Riaan. 3rd point and Jeff caught a racquet in the mouth. Jeff wasn’t in the match though and lost 0-3.

In the end Parkview had 1 more point than us, but who cares.

Francis 3-1

Jeff 0-3

Gary 3-1

Trevor 3-2

Lisa won 3-0

Claire won 3-2, fantastic match, her opponent scored more points but Claire played some very nice squash

Lynda won 3-1, despite being sick and injuring herself during the match, if there is a crack or dent in the right side wall of Court 1 ask Lynda why !!!!!
