11th LEAGUE vs Wits

Having given the Wits "A" team a thorough hiding two weeks ago we arrived at Wits expecting an easy night. Surprise, surprise! That internationally renowned seat of learning may graduate world-class doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. but they have no idea how to grade squash teams. This "B" team would thump their "A" team.

Brian at No1 played first - easily taking the first two games (15/8 and 15/8) The young, fit student then made a come-back taking the next two games (5/15; 12/15). A very tired Brian in true Swieger's fashion and determination gave it everything and fortunately the young whipper-snapper lost his cool with himself and allowed Brian to take the fifth 15/12.

Bob (first match this season) played next at No3. The rust showed as he hardly saw the ball losing the first game 6/15. Took a deep breath and the second game 15/6, lost the third 11/15 but realised that the young student also had an immature squash mind and was starting to lose his cool so Bob used this to advantage and won the fourth game 15/13 and at 14 all in the fifth looked absolutely whacked but asked for a let (some might have given it - but it wasn't justified) at which the student really threw his toys out and gave Bob the set by smashing the ball in anger into the tin a few times. Result 17/15 to Bob!

Geoff at No3 was next up. Poor old Geoff, looked just that OLD! He never got going in the first losing 6/15. Made a better effort in the second but lost it 14/16 and faded badly in the third losing 12/15.

Des to play. I must mention here that the 11th League Disciplinary Committee is to review the Captain's report and it is highly likely that Des will be summoned to a hearing having totally disregarded his C-A-P-T-A-I-N's order to play at No3 and refused to play unless he played at No4. That is the C-A-P-T-A-I-N's position!!

Nevertheless, at 6/7 in games in Wits favour it was essential that Des won. He was also up against a determined young student and took the first two games 16/14 and 15/9. We thought it was al over but, wait, the kid struck back taking the next two games 11/15 and 11/15. I must say we were worried as Des was pretty tired and the kid hardly sweating! But, again, old head was too strong for the immature student mind and Des won the final game 15/9.

Result in games - Chamber 9 and Wits "B" 9 and points - Chamber 226 and Wits 230.

The three wins gave us a 12/9 win.

Final result : 12 - 9

10th LEAGUE vs Parkview

Unfortunately another bad night (against Parkview).

I arrived at Chambers about 6.55 to find Paul walking off court having lost 5 – 15, 11 – 15 and 9 – 15 to Michael

Next up was Johan Mare playing a whippersnapper (16 yrs old) and although he played well went down 8 – 15, 11 – 15, 15 – 10 and 11 – 15.

3rd match on Roger against Mike with the result of 7 – 15, 12 – 15 and 6 – 15.

Finally it was Captain Not So Fantastic against Walther with the match going the same way as Paul and Roger. Score 8 – 15, 5 – 15 and 12 – 15.

Match result 1 – 16 so it’s thanks to Johan for saving the whitewash

Final result : 116

9th LEAGUE vs Alberton

Last week was Alberton 05 team away and this week it was Alberton 04 team at home. We’d seen the 04 team demolish their opponents when we played last week so were up for a tough couple of games. They made it after getting lost for a few turns and seeing some of the sights available north of Voortrekker Street.

No. 3 Lyal vs Lizel: Lyal was making weak excuses about having to leave early to entertain more important people so he got to go on first against Lizel sporting a pink skirt (Lizel sporting the skirt that is, not Lyal – although sometimes we wonder…). The first game of the evening was a marathon with Lyal obviously bedazzled by the pink skirt ‘cause he lost. Next game was close too, but went the right way despite some deviousness and general good play by the lady (Lizel the lady that is, not Lyal – although sometimes we wonder…). Having managed to concentrate on the game and not the opponent, Lyal kept on improving and won the next two to take the match.

No. 1 Brennan vs Harry: Playing at the same time as Lyal was Brennan on the other court. Unfortunately I was marking and missed this game because by all accounts it was something to behold. There have been shorter cricket test matches. Brennan has made a habit of playing five setters and this was no exception. If there ever was a classic squash game, this would be it with the advantage swinging first one way and then the other. After the third game Brennan was 1-2 down and managed to catch his breath for long enough to tell me that all was fine on the western front because he’d figured out his opp’s game plan. And so it would appear because he won the next two games and the match – not before taking both games to 15-13 though. So he emerged victorious after 1hr10mins while actually getting fewer points than his opponent. The intention is to let him stay on a winning streak, but aim more towards the less epic 3-0 wins.

No. 4 Steph vs Corne: Monday evening saw Steph pitch up for a game but then leave before getting court time because he’d packed his son’s shorts in his tog bag. Thankfully, this time he had full size pants for the outing. I was marking this game as well, but should have kept my distance. Gave a game point call against Steph in the first game and boy-o-boy was I in the poo. Marking aside, the first two games didn’t go well for Steph. He came back in the third though and his opponent looked to be tiring. Unfortunately not enough to let Steph take the match to five sets.

No. 2 Nigel vs William: I was keen to get back on form, but it’ll have to wait a little longer because the game was full of loose shots and lots of tin. Luckily my opponent was a smoker and allowed me to take the match in four games despite some frankly cr*p squash. Hopefully the quality improves from here on in.

All in all a good result against tough opponents followed by some decent grub at Lapa Fo (not to mention milkshakes – yes milkshakes – as ordered by certain un-named parties).

Summary

No. 1 Brennan won 3-2: 11-15, 16-14, 10-15, 15-13, 15-13

No. 2 Nigel won 3-1:15-13, 10-15, 15-13, 15-12

No. 3 Lyal won 3-1: 16-18, 16-14, 15-12, 15-12

No. 4 Steph lost 1-3: 8-15, 5-15, 17-15, 12-15

Final result :13 - 7

8th league “B” vs. Edenvale

The "poisonous pen" is back !! from yet another life threatening injury, however, more importantly, I brought……….besides pure skill……. “Divine intervention”……. just in time I might add.

We had played 3 and lost 3 ……..horribly.

The ‘ruffians’ from 8A were starting to pass comments which due to their very low IQ, are not worth mentioning……..you know when a team is running scared………

Just a tip to 8A………..”practise boyz or should it be girlz……..the dust up is scheduled for 22nd April……..and one other thing…….don’t be late or come with an excuse that you can’t play or your foot is sore !!!!.

Anyway, up first is Dave Hamilton at a highly over rated number 2, who plays Steve Kobrin, and in true Hamilton style, what should have been a cake walk ends up been a closer call than what the scoreline suggests. Anyway 3 – ‘duck’ is a good start.

Up next is………Big G (Gavin Martin)… talking quite a good game…....but those bent and buckled legs have done far too much bowling…….no not ten pin bowling….cricket……and it has been noticeable, especially in the last few years that running around the court is not his top game, however, the ‘ol bullet had enough class and klapped his oppo. 3 – ‘duck’……well played Big G.

On next……….pure class and skill ………and lovely to watch. Went up against Edenvale’s best player, but we had the same idea, we put our best player at 3……no need to mention who it is.

Klapped Clinton 3 – 1.

By this time we have scored more points than in our previous 3 matches put together.

On last is our so called “stand in’ cappy Graham Vermaak (GV) at No. 1. Up against Terry Lawrenson who proceeds to dish out a squash lesson in the first game on how to play the forehand drive. Just to make sure Terry keeps in the forehand groove GV gives him 9 other chances to demonstrate his prowess in killing it off, which he happily accepts. 1st game needless to say, GV got a hiding.

Well now……..divine intervention together with a pulled calf muscle meant Terry just lost the 2nd. Now the rest should have been a formality……..but not for our man GV ……who proceeds to play “tight down the middle” and somehow loses the 3rd. Some more divine intervention needed and the calf muscle finally becomes unbearable, GV just pips the 4th and gets a walkover in the 5th.

Match result : 16 - 3

8th League “A” vs. Pirates

This is a sad neck of the woods. Located in the middle of nowhere with dirty, run down courts with ceiling boards missing and semi lit showers that hardly work. But their side is strong and will take some beating this year. They cleaned up the snotsniverlers two weeks ago and we were no different.

At no 1 Bruce B put up a good struggle but faded 1 -- 3.

Likewise Paul Fallon at no 3. Went down 2 -- 3.

George at No 4 embarrassed himself and dragged our name through the mud, losing 3 zip to Piet who we've regularly whipped over the years.

Then came man of the match Mark V N at # 2 with an excellent game, winning 3 -- 2 from 2 down.

So overall 6 -- 14 down and back to the drawing board.

Match score: 6 - 14

7th League vs. Edenvale

Edenvale recorded a first win against Chambers last night……… (7-12).

Stuart “100%” Vey again carrying the team by playing precision squash against Mike Lawrenson (twice the size of Stuart). Mr Vey displaying a variety of well placed shots and taking the game 3-0. Keep it up and Manie will not be able to keep you at No 4……….

Jacques tried his best against a very determined 23 year old Kent Raines, but the youngster chased down every ball (and anything that moved or looked like a ball) on court. Jacques lost 0-3. As an economist, Kent could not provide us with any positive news about the SA economic outlook for 2009…

Gerhard played against Mark Davies and went down 2-0 before you could say “cork screw”. Trying desperately to focus after spending the weekend in Cape Town and drinking too much Paardeberg Cabernet, I managed to make it 2 all but lost the last game 13-15. (3-2 loss) . Low and behold, with no scalps taken to date I will be scribe again next week………..

Duncan up next, playing a very laid back Orrin Davies and going down 2-0 before Duncan had a chance to clean his glasses. Changing his game plan after good advice from the guy that just lost the match before him (Duncan , I think Orrin is getting tired…..) , managed to pull it back 2 all. Orrin catching a wakeup (and effort) in the last to beat Duncan 3-2.

Edenvale made us feel extremely welcome and Mike produced a very special meal even after his 3-0 defeat to Stuart (claim he spend hours behind the stove…??).

Thanks to Mike and his team at Edenvale and a well deserved win.

Until next week……………

Match score: 7 - 12

6thth League vs Pirates

George lost 0-3

Gavin B lost 1-3

Sadesh won 3-0

Gavin G lost 0-3

Match result : 4 - 12

5thth League vs Dainfern

Flip kicked off against Lucy, one of two ladies in the Dainfern side. Feeling the after effects of an injury, Flip played a blinder and actually admitted that not being able to run as he normally does he was forced to hit where his opponent was not. Quite an admission to make as I thought that was the whole aim of squash all along! We have also taken note of Flip’s strategy of arriving early when none of his teammates were there so that he could play at four, against his captain’s orders! (3-0)

Chris v H on next against next against Mark and fortunately Mark was still suffering the ill effects of a heavy weekend and Chris was able to take the first game quite comfortably. From then on the going got a lot tougher as our man Chris battled to stay in touch, but to no avail. (1-3)

Richard on next at three against the Tony, the mobile chicane. Rich should have won both the opening games but only took the second. Once again his poor run of form continued losing the next two for a very disappointing loss. (1-3)

And so to our new number two, Ryan, against the other lady in their side (Sharon). Let’s just say that there was a reason that Dainfern’s ladies side won the 1st league. Sharon was able to out run, out muscle and ultimately out play Ryan. Ryan never stopped running though in a hugely entertaining match but what ever he tried came back with interest. The final game must be a nominee for game of the year with Ryan having at least four game point points but it was Sharon who eventually prevailed 21-19. Hard to believe that after such a momentous effort Ryan came away with less than the rest of his team mates. (0-3)

Match result : 5 - 12

4th LEAGUE vs Old Eds

‘Twas a quiet night at the Chamber. Dave, Trevor and John were there at 6.30 but no opposition and absolutely nobody else playing. Then a desperate phone call from Dave Lazer – we’ve got the wrong venue, we’re all at Eds. Well should we take a walkover or wait. In sporting Chamber fashion we waited and when they eventually arrived, use two courts (we could have used all five).

Dave and the Silver Fox John went on simultaneously. Dave came off very quickly after getting a lesson from a youngster a third of his age (he’s going to be a good player, apparently his brother plays 1st league).

Silver Fox against Rob Halstead found himself 9-0 in the first game before Rob woke up. With the PARS scoring I couldn’t lose from there (but I did try to). Rob won the second after a lapse but the next two were fairly comfortable – 3-1 win.

Jeff on against Toby. This had a 5-setter written all over it before the start – neither of them know when to give up. And true enough a 5-setter it was, with Toby snatching it 15-13 in the 5th.

So to our match saver of last week, we needed a win from Trevor playing Wayne. Trevor won the first, but the 5-setter of the previous night kicked in and Trevor’s legs gave way. A 1-3 loss. Both players recommended that the marker wore glasses in future (Wayne was warned twice for excessive sarcasm towards the marker) – however I’m comfortable in the knowledge that I’ve never given a bad call in my life, and never will.

We should have taken the walk-over!!!!!!!!!!!

Match result : 6 - 13

3rd LEAGUE vs Bryanston Sports

We played at Bryanston, Volker played 2nd league, but they were home too. So Volker was there, Bert was there, and Mike was there. Just like the good old days. (Even Jono was there, but playing 2nd too.) Bert & Mike had some friendly banter off the court and luckily they didn’t play each other – last time they played nearly ended in fisticuffs.

Francis played first against Peter. They played both times last year too. But Francis was too sharp, makes it look so easy, and had a comfortable 3-0 win.

Willem played next against John. John had great shots, hard and low which caught Willem a lot, but didn’t have the legs to go with the shots. So Willem ran him tired and he started making mistakes. Maybe those fitness sessions are starting to pay off. Willem also won 3-0.

Mike played next against Mike. Was struggling a bit and was 1-2 down. But managed to hold on and come out on top. 3-2.

Gary played last against (boom boom) Bert. I don’t know if it was the ball or the court or a combination but the ball was skidding a lot. And Boom Boom did. He hit the ball so hard it was just shooting to the back and dying. Gary had no answer until well into the 3rd. Managed to hold on and keep Bert running and won the 3rd. Now it was 1-2. Next 2 were Gary’s with Bert getting progressively more tired.

At least our results are getting better each week. We need to work our way to the top.

(Willem, Mike and Gary are sitting on 50% win; Francis has dropped 2 games in 4 matches.)

Francisco: 3-0

Mike: 3-2

Willem: 3-0

Gary: 3-2

11th LEAGUE vs Wits

Chambers lectured them in performance and served up a 12/4 thrashing to the visitors.

Brian in No. 1 playing like a demon possessed - out-played and dominated his opponent giving him a 3 / 0 lesson in squash he’ll never forget. Score 45 /20.

Paddy in No. 2 had a very easy win at 3/0. He didn’t even need to hit the ball or work up a sweat – his opponent failing to arrive on court. Score 45 / 0

John at No. 3 struggled against a real hard hitter and went down sweating to lose 0/3. Score 24/45

Des at No. 4 was the star of the match. At 2/1 up he looked as if he might run out of steam in the 4th game , but trying to save his reputation he dug deep and found the extra energy to take the 4th game to win the match 3/1. Score 56/40.

Final Score – Chambers win 12/4.

Well done again.

John Ferrington.

Final result : 12 - 4

10th LEAGUE vs Wits

Here goes with my first match report (Johan Mare)

Well, these youngsters at Wits you know………Sometimes they are beginners and inexperienced, and sometimes they’re not. Last Wednesday they were not.

Being somewhat short of players on the night, Andile very kindly agreed to step into the breach as a strong #1.

Youngster Thomas started off well and took the first game 15-12 while Andile was warming up and finding his feet

So, Andile took the second game 16-14 (after a bit of a battle) and the third game in his stride 15-10

Oh dear, lo and behold, Thomas makes a comeback and takes the fourth 15-12

At 2 all, Andile was determined to pull the fifth back, but Thomas would have none of it. Andile played his heart out but lost 12-15

At #2, Johan Carstens took 13 points off Lamun(?) in game one, and 12 in game two

Some serious encouragement then ensued, resulting in game three arriving at 14 all!!

But alas, it was not to be, Johan going down 14-16 oh so close.

At # 3, Roger took 10 points off Ruben in games one and two

Some serious encouragement then ensued, resulting in game three once again arriving at 14 all!!

But alas, it was again not to be, Roger going down 14-16 oh so close.

At # 4 Johan Mare played youngster Alan and could only manage a measly 6 points in the first and an even worse 4 points in the second game!

Some serious encouragement then ensued, resulting in Johan going up 15-13 in game three!!

But alas, it was once again not to be, Johan going down 10-15 in the fourth

Andile: 2-3

Johan C: 0-3

Roger: 0-3

Johan M: 1-3

Final result : 316

9th LEAGUE vs Alberton

It was a dark and ominous night – except for the full moon and somewhat unreliable light cast by the few working streetlamps in Alberton. Appropriate then that we were scheduled to foray to the far reaches of the South where a different language is spoken, kids are allowed to run with scissors and women do not yet have the vote. I knew we were in trouble when I saw that there were two Alberton teams in our league. As soon as the mail was sent out asking about team availability, the excuses came pouring in… One of the regulars had to make a trip to Morocco to look for love??? Why not just go down Rivonia Rd at midnight? Another had a teleconference starting at 7pm – don’t know about that one. Other excuses ranged from injury to night school to ‘I just don’t wanna play’. And this is only the third game of the season. Eventually I was only able to make a team with the help of Gabriel, stepping up to the plate at the 11th hour. So, with some trepidation and a gear lock – last time he was there, Steph’s car was stolen – we headed down the highway until we could almost see Table Mountain and then shanked a left turn to the Alberton club.

No. 4 Gabriel vs. Karen. I missed some of his game, but for the rest Gabriel looked solid. Shots were hitting a good length and he didn’t let Karen get into the game at all. For a late inclusion, he gave us a pretty solids start to the evening and the match was over before you could say ‘three love’.

No. 2 Nigel vs. Shaun. All the psychological advantage gained by Gabriel was promptly lost by yours truly. Took the first game and was well set to take the second at 14-9 up. Then Shaun got back to 14 apiece and here began the battle – every time one of us got the advantage, it was lost again, usually by a mistake of the opponent rather than good play. We traded shots for the equivalent of another half a game before Shaun ended it at 23-21. Truth be told, I don’t remember that much of the rest of the match. We were both wheezing like octogenarians and playing for a breather. Shaun took the third game before I walloped him in the fourth and thought that I could finish it quickly. Not to be – he ended with some good hitting to take the fifth and banish me to lick my wounds.

No. 3 Steph vs. Adam. Steph’s first game of the season and he might have been expected to be a bit rusty. Not a bit of it. Everything was coming off the racquet crisply and he was making the T his own. Apart from a slight hiccup in the second game where he made things more difficult for himself than they had to be, it was Steph all the way. Some sublime drops and a couple of killer drives sealed the win for him and put the evening in our hands.

No. 1 Brennan vs. Andy. Brennan was up against the wily Andy. Andy sank 3 or 4 beers in the buildup to the game so Brennan knew that he was up against it with that kind of confidence. Looked as if Andy should have slowed down a little on the hops though as Brennan took the first game 15-13. Piece of cake. With more cake to be after winning the second game 15-13. For a bit of a change of scoreline, Brennan lost the third 13-15. No matter because we were sure that he’d clean up in the fourth. Didn’t happen that way though and he lost 14-16. By this time Andy’s blood was fully infused with beer and Brennan made him pay by using the drops to good effect. Not enough legs left in Andy as Brennan obliterated him 15-6 in the final game.

An impressive victory where the final result belied the closeness of the matches was followed by an equally impressive meal at the local Italian eatery.

Summary

1. Brennan won 3-2: 15-13; 15-13; 13-15; 14-16; 15-6

2. Nigel lost 2-3: 15-13; 21-23; 11-15; 15-4; 13-15

3. Steph won 3-0: 15-6; 20-18; 15-10

4. Gabriel won 3-0: 15-7; 15-8; 15-10

Final result :14 - 5

8th League “A” vs. Pirates

A hatrick, 3 wins in a row! Can this be sustained I hear the crowd cry. We darn well hope so.

On goes Mark who nose something about his Israeli opponent’s fitness and skilfully wears out Asaf. Mark wins in five and proves men can multi-task as between games he re tied his son, Stephen’s shoes, fixed his hung computer game, adjusted his t-shirt, performed a short counselling session and explained why it was taking so long.

Michael, not playing his best squash recently, maintained his crap form for the first two games. Starring a defeat down the barrel, he changed his game plan; afterwards this was found not to be true because he never had a game plan in the first place! A combination of deft shots, a plan and whingeing at the marker(s) ensured the next three games went the way of the older experienced player. Back to the marking and Michael has recommended two prime candidates for the marking course to be held at the mid season break. Namely, the Chamber Exiles marker who shall remain nameless (the whingeing was fallon on deaf ears) for giving a time ball on game point and the opposition marker who shall also remain nameless (the kippah must have obscured his vision) for not giving lets that would clearly have resulted in decapitation of the opponent had the shot been followed through.

Bruce who could not take the conflict occurring through the glass opted to play on court three and promptly demolished Peter. This was sweet revenge for the hiding he received during their last meeting. Brucie, you have improved!

A 16 pointer in the bag; over to Paul. Alas only 14 as the ding dong affair had Paul falling at the final bell. An extremely long match (one game going to 21) that nearly caused the rest of the team to miss a smashing nosh at Dopio Zero with Captain George who had put in a 10 km run earlier. He, Bruce and Graham of snotsnivler fame have confirmed entries for the New York marathon on November 1st. Rumour has it that Paul and Mark have also entered; awaiting wild card status, thus leaving Michael back in South Africa to pick up the 8th league winners cup!

Squash Tip of the Week

Triple D. Squash is a tactical game and an opponent’s superior fitness can often be overcome by a good tactical player. Create Doubt through Delay and Deception.

#1: Bruce vs. Peter, 3-0: 15-8, 16-14, 15-13

#2: Mark vs. Asaf, 3-2: 15-13, 13-15, 15-12, 12-15, 15-6

#3: Paul vs. Volker: 2-3: 15-13, 9-15, 16-14, 19-21, 13-15

#4: Michael vs. John: 3-2: 13-15, 14-16, 15-8, 15-5, 15-12

Match score: 14 - 7

7th League vs. Jeppe

7th League played against Wits and we had a good win at 13-6. The Wits players all in the early 20’s looking trim and fit with an average BMI (Body Mass Index for Stuart’s knowledge) of about 0.000001

First up at No 4 was Stuart “I must play more” Vey. I think the 19 year old student was completely bamboozled when Stuart squeezed his stomach 3 times and was not able to focus on the game after that. Too much experience there and Stuart took the game 3-0.

Jacques played next at No 3 and showed some real mettle when at 2 all took the last game 15-11 to win 3-2. He will however have to face a straff dop for disappearing like the great Houdini after the match. (Can somebody tell Udo that Jacques has left the building…………)

Manie played next at No 2 against a fellow from Durban and all (Dhiren Pharboo). Manie was unstoppable and the sounds emanating from the court next door (was playing myself at the time) sounded like a sugar cane lorry on a downhill dirt road in KZN……..

Gerhard was up against Dylan at No 1(he had a 20 year old girlfriend as a supporter and clearly tried to impress her with his mobility on the court). I believe he is still running and somebody must switch off the lights and tell him to go home. I manage to pull a game back after being down at 2-0 but in the 4th slipped on something and realized it is my tongue!!!!! . I lost 3-1 and Manie straffed me and appointed me scribe for the next match. Until next week………..

Match score: 13-6

6thth League vs Randburg

Dirk on at 1: Down 1-3 although unlucky not to take it to 5

Gavin B at 2: Played a school whipper snapper who had enough hair to lend to all our Chamber over 50’s. Got moered 0-3

Sadesh at 3: Nice and steady 3-1

Dimitri at 4: Comfortable 3-1

Match result : 7 - 10

5thth League vs Winchester Hills

Ryan made a welcome return at four against Eugene. It was a good thing that Ryan was able to clinch it in straight sets as the impromptu shower on the floorboards was testimony to the amount of running done on the night. It was a lot tougher than the scoreboard suggests but Ryan played extremely well. (3-1)

Flip on next at two found the going even tougher against a guy who played a similar game to Flip but just made fewer errors on the night. A strong finish allowed Flip to edge the first game 16-14 but thereafter the errors started to creep in and the next two were lost quite easily. The last game was a much closer affair but the final game was lost 13-15. (1-3)

Fergus on at one. He was there and thereabouts in each of the three games and even improved from 12 to 13 to 14 points per game but in each was pipped to the post by a guy he could well have beaten. (0-3)

Last up was Richard at three knowing that a three love victory could still pull it through for the team. Unfortunately it was three love, just not in favour of Chambers! Hopefully this was my worst game of the season over and done with. (0-3)

Lesson for the night - never assume that things can only get better.

Match result : 4 - 12

4th LEAGUE vs Jeppe

Long trip to Jeppe and we were all there at 6.30 sharp, with our reserve Jeff coming to support the team also (he couldn’t be persuaded to write the report however.

Silver fox on first raced into a 2-0 lead against Peter Raines, had a blip in the 3rd but won the 4th. 3-1 win

Vevek on next against Warren had a bad match and lost 0-3

Phil played a great first game but ran out of legs after that and lost 0-3.

So………….all Trevor had to do was win 3-0 for a points count. After a serious pre-match pep-talk which focused on Trevor focusing on the game. Trevor………………..focussed hard, played some great squash and won 3-0. Great win.

Overall we won by 11 points. The evening was rounded off by watching Liverpool thrash Inter Milan at the Grand Slam in Edenvale.

Match result : 9 - 7

3rd LEAGUE vs Jeppe

Seems 3rd and 4th played Jeppe on the same night. And both were victorious.

Willem played first against Barry, both were unhappy with the marker (Anton). Willem thought they shouldn’t be lets and Barry thought they should be strokes. Willem struggled with the slow game that Barry made him play (Master’s squash), but managed to hold on and win the 5th.

Gary played next against Anton. Took a bit of warming up (got a hiding in the first), but managed to go 2-1 up. Then lost the 4th, making it another 5 setter. Gary won the 5th convincingly; Anton said he lost because of the marker (Francis).

Mike played next against Walter. Another awkward player. (When we play Jeppe in Masters – Trevor has to play him.) Mike was close in most games but couldn’t win. He managed to win the 3rd, but couldn’t get the 4th to make it go to 5. Mike complained about their marker (Barry).

Francis played last (and I marked), not problems, no contentions. He cleaned Trevor up like he was a novice; dropping 4, 4 and 3 points. I thought we would see our first PAR bagel when he was 10-0 up in the 3rd. The Jeppe guys complained that Francis should be playing first league.

Francisco: 3-0
