Jared played Mark, couldn’t get a game.
Jeff played Dean, couldn’t get a game.

4th B (in name only) vs CCJ

After our thrashing last week, we hoped to get back on track against CCJ who had been thrashed even worse by Randburg.

Ron took to the courts first, knocked up nicely with a yellow dot ball and just as they were about to start a green dot appeared from the captain. This green dot must have been from depths of DaveP’s bag – as dead as a doorpost. Ron nearly got the ball to the back of the court once, but not quite. The less said about this performance the better. Having had harsh words with his girlfriend the previous week about being expected home early on a Tuesday. Ron had to rush off to the girlfriends daughters 21st party!!!!!!!!!! A poor performance all round.
The Silver Fox didn’t break sweat against his opponent and nor did young Kyle so two 3-0 victories put us in the pound seats.
The Eagle (Rich) then landed just in time from Cape  Town and although losing the 3rd managed to conquer the altitude and won 3-1.
Another good win for the B team (in name only) underdogs

Overall result: Won 12 – 4

6th A vs Wendywood

I am proud to advise that without any ringers in our side and in the absence of Peter George Palmer Nichol (not), we conquered wendywood

Gave Geecock vs Marius - 3-0
Gick vs Joe - 2-3 (not so easy in 6 league hey Nick)
Gbow vs Billy - 3-0
Ganie meer Manie vs Johan - 3-2

Overall result: Won  14 - 5

6th B vs Jeppe

Travelling to the nether regions of the city is always an experience and this time was no different. We knew it would be a tough evening with Jeppe having given our “A” team a bit of a klap the previous week.

Nigel on first to warm up the courts. Thought it was going to be a cruise as the first two games were a cinch. But oppo Shane worked his way back into the match with some great cutting at the T. After leading 13-8 in the fourth and losing 16-14, it was a battle to come back in the fifth. But Shane ran out of legs and it was match to Nigel – although at a cost which became apparent later. Won 3-2.

Mark on next against Greg: first game was a doddle. Next game not so much. Third game was lengthy affair with both players chasing the ball like an Irishman chasing a potato on a merry go round. A good few layers of wood must have been lost through the friction of a thousand shot rallies. Worked to Mark’s advantage though and he got the game 17-15. Then into the fourth and Mark was 11-6 down. Mental strength prevailed and Mark won the next 9 points finish in style. Won 3-1.

So, onto Danie vs Kent: Despite being named for cigarettes, Kent was a runner. And run he did. Danie was happy to let him do so and took a close first game. A ding-dong epic ensued with the next two games going Kent’s way. Danie tightened the screws in the fourth with some drives hugging the wall and dying in the corners. But that old bug-bear, fitness, caught him in the final game and he couldn’t push Kent quite hard enough to force the errors. Lost 2-3.

Finally Louis against Chris. Louis had to get one game to get a points count and two for the outright win. Unfortunately he didn’t manage this – the word ‘ringer’ comes to mind when we talk of Chris. Louis pushed him hard in the first, just losing 16-14. Second game was no contest as Louis got frustrated with himself, but reigned it in in the third, running well. However Chris was a slippery character and didn’t waste any of his chances. Lost 0-3.

The evening was ended out at a ‘Portuguese’ spot in Bedfordview, for which our hosts kindly picked up the bill – obviously happy with their win for the evening.

Overall result: Lost 8 - 11

7th League vs. Wits

Well it’s official – ageism has crept into this sport we love Steph. It would appear that the oldest guy in the tie is due to take the fall for this season. Last week it was you, this week it is me. Maybe I should canvas the opposing team prior to team selection and see if there are any older enemies to play and select accordingly. My wife also saw me nursing a niggle and warned me not to play for fear of me hurting myself – did I listen to her? – did I heed my own advice to my team that if they are not 100% fit they should stand down? – these and many more rhetorical questions unfortunately have a definite un-rhetorical answer – “NO!”.

#3 - Playing early is never pleasant, with no team members to help you along – you feel like it’s “me” against all of “them”! I went down to my arch rival “foul-mouthed Roy” who singled me out at the start of the match saying “I don’t care what number you are – I’m playing YOU” with a pointy finger nogal. I lost the first but how unforgivable to lose the second when you are 14-12 ahead. Crappie-Cappie takes on a whole new meaning. After some very astute advice from Ben, I managed to salvage some pride in taking the third but a close 14-16 chase in the fourth was not good enough and I lost. (1-3)

#4 - Ben on next for his debut match in Gauteng League and it needed to be a good one as he was not only trying to balance the score sheets but trying to find some positive resolve to his crappie car troubled day. Boy-oh-boy did he turn the tables on Sanjay. Normally a sweet hitter of the ball but this time he was unsettled from the start and our Sweetmeat Sanjay was a little sour. Ben is still a little wild and a good percentage of his shots are loose but boy can he chase a ball down…even a certain winner gets pulled back into the realm of play and then there are the intermittent tight shots that leave you with no room to move and the opponent is exhausted from hitting winners that never win and it’s game over. Ben disposed of Sanjay in three quick games and puts the team one game ahead. Good first outing Ben! (3-0)

#1 - Then along came Brennan, now that the pressure for dominance was upon us – we needed a solid performance and this from a man who has already had a lunch-time match and endured a PTA meeting – “of what metal are these former 6th league player made?” Brennan goes down in the first closely contested game and all I could say to him in the break was that he is doing nothing wrong except that he needs to do it better and Brennan responded. Tight drives, especially down the backhand and some breathtaking drops (some ghastly ones as well) and then some well-disguised crosscourt backhanders that came from nowhere and the game was on. Brennan goes 2-1 up and he just gets better as he goes along. In the third I see Brennan checking out Stephen and I think he saw what I saw – Stephen was exhausted, mistakes happen, a bit of a temper and a disconsolate Stephen goes down without too much resistance. Here’s to Brennan breaking the mould of taking it to a five setter. (3-1)

#2 – Now it is up to Paul to seal the deal. I personally think that Paul relishes in this kind of pressure – just a thought mind you! Paul takes the first but comes off court saying that he was lucky. Yes, he was – but he too was playing a good game so I urge him to do more of the same with less of the mistakes and Paul obliges by taking the second in relative ease. This time Paul realizes that he needs to keep James behind him in order to keep the advantage but James is a classy player with great potential and he finds his way back into the match and takes a 16-14 third and then a 15-13 fourth and eliciting for us a sight seldom seen – Paul shouting at himself and throwing his racquet! Four years I’ve played with him and never seen it happen – so yes – he is human! Oh yes, Paul was playing without his glasses as well and I never asked him why??? Anyway, back to the game, Paul manages to fulfill his self-analyzed-assessment of keeping James behind him and steers the ship safely home. The match of the night! (3-2)

Ben off home to sort out his car and starving family crisis, James off to his studies and the rest of the motley crew off to Doppios where we find Dave slumming it with the 6th league team (the only place he can win a game these days – shame) and soliciting anybody with earring’s for sex - yes - unfortunately that included me. “Have you no shame man?” A great chow and company completes a good night out where “fun was had” by Chamber Exiles.

Gary played against Dean. Games were close but Gary couldn’t win any.
Jared played against Dean. (A different one.) Pretty good first time performance and had a good win.
Next up, Stan against Tom. Stan won comfortably.
Lastly Peter against Adam. Adam was too sharp for Peter and although Peter came close in the 3rd, he didn’t win a game.
We lost by a game.

Peter: 0-3
Gary: 0-3
Jared: 3-1

Overall result: Lost 6 - 9

4th A vs Wanderers

Dave went on first against an hard hitting an aggressive opponent, fought back well to win a hard fought match 3-1,

Vevek went on next, won the 1st easily and the next two fairly narrowly for a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Ryan went on next against Hillario., did not play his usual hard hitting aggressive game, levelled the match at 1-1 but went down quite easily at the end 3-1.

It was then left to Flip to get at least one game to win tie, he could not get going against a very hard hitting and determined opponent, got to 13 points in two games but could not finish and lost 3-0.

The match was decided by a points countdown, and after two re-counts the final result was that we lost by one point. It was hard to believe that we eventually lost a match that looked very difficult to lost after the first two match results.

FINAL RESULT

Ryan lost 1-3
Vevek won 3-0
Dave won 3-1
Flip lost 0-3

Match ended equal matches and games, won by Wanderers by 1 point.

Overall result: Lost 7 – 9

4th B (in name only) vs Randburg

Randburg had won 16-0 against CCJ the previous week so maybe we were up against it a bit. We were missing our 1 and 2 from last week as well as The King was overseas conquering the Yorkshire Open and Rich was not allowed “out to play” as his wife had organised a dinner evening – ON A TUESDAY RICH – 2nd COTY NOMINATION for the team (the first being The King for losing the 5th from 14-9 up last week.
The first three Randburg players to arrive were Phil Rainbow, Sven van Rie and Jay-Lee and none of them were playing No 1. Yes we were in trouble.
Kyle on first against Phil for his 1st league match and sneaked the first game 16-14. Phil upped his game a notch and took the next three all by very close margins. A good performance from Kyle who never stopped running but a 3-1 loss.
Next on Ron against Jay. Jay was too fit and too fast and although Ron sneaked the 3rd game the effort was too much and the 4th was easy for Jay. 3-1 loss.
Next was the match of the night with Nick taking on Sven (the best referee in the world). Phil bravely volunteered to referee the match and everything went swimmingly for Sven until a “questionable call” (in his opinion) went against him and things started to go down-hill. The match swung each way with Sven getting more and more annoyed (with himself, the ref, Nick, the World). Then at 13-13 in the 5th Sven hit the tin and Nick shouted to try and pump himself up. Sven didn’t like that and had harsh words. Nick won the last point and then the fireworks started. Fisticuffs were just avoided, tempers calmed down and apologies ensued from all parties.
The last match was a non-event with nothing to play for and the Silver Fox being beaten convincingly by a young runner, Craig. Down 0-3

So an interesting evening saw a 5-14 loss. But we’re still above the “A” team.

Overall result: Lost 5 – 14

6th A vs Jeppe

3 Jeppe players arrived but not their No 1. We sportingly allowed their No 3 to play No 1 instead. Bad decision – should have taken all the points

Gavin lost 1-3
George lost 1-3
Manie w/0 3-0
Jacques lost 1-3

Overall result: Lost  6 - 12

6th B vs Bryanston

Ouch – wake-up call so early in the season… The dark and stormy evening should have been fore-warning enough that there was trouble on the way. And I can’t say that anyone played particularly badly, it was rather a case of our opponents playing particularly well.

Mark was up first against Rob: first game quickly done – no problem. Second game – wheels detached. His opponent found his rhythm was deadly on anything short. This made life difficult as Mark was struggling to get a good length. Nevertheless, the next two games were hard fought, but Rob had the edge to close it out. Lost 1-3.

Louis on next for his inaugural 6th B game. Unfortunately for him, he was playing against Alex – a very handy player returning to squash after several years of frequenting various bar stools. First game was a slaughter. Next game saw Louis getting his mojo back – not enough to trouble Alex though. In the third game Alex was huffing and puffing and the legs were definitely wobbling a bit. Some untimely errors from Louis, however, meant that he couldn’t capitalise on this enough and that was it. Lost 0-3.

Looking bad already and only halfway into the evening – Nigel up next against the schoolboy energy (and attitude) of James. The rallies were long and hard fought. In each game James bolted out ahead, then I reigned him in and thought I had enough to finish it, only for James to tighten it a bit more and take the victory. Thought I had turned the corner in the third game when his legs finally looked to be tiring and I had changed from the slug-fest to floated shots, but it wasn’t to be, James took the honours. Lost 0-3.

So was it to be a 16 point drilling so early in the season. Danie was our last hope at saving the blushes. Up against Che. I can’t say it was the prettiest squash I’ve seen. Indeed, this was no Mona Lisa, rather more Hieronymous. But effective for Danie – First game was easy peasy. Next two went to Che. With Danie looking down the barrel he had to tighten up his game – and did. Some (very) dubious calls from the marker saw the players deciding between themselves on the lets/strokes… And lo and behold, Danie scraped through and averted complete disaster for the team. Won 3-2.

The games were followed up with some fantastically cold beers in the pub – with iced beer mugs nogal. It was too late for food, so we had to settle for hops. Next week is against Jeppe who had beaten Bryanston the previous week. Could be tough times ahead.

Overall result: Lost 4 - 14

7th League vs. Randburg

7th League vs. Randburg

Herkie's first match as a league player was against Modderfontein's number 3. He lost the first but his game was a spot better than his opponent. He took the second and third and unfortunately his opponent suffered an injury and had to withdraw from the last game. 3 - 1 win.

Brennan played at number 1 and in true Brennan style took it to a 5 setter to take it 3 - 2 for a win.

Paul had a good start at number 2 taking the first. His opponent came back to take the second. Paul came back to take the second and third for a great victory. 3 - 1

Steph playing in his patented number 4 spot took the first in great style. His opponent picked it up and took the second. Steph fought back to make it 2 - 1. His opponent not wanting to lose came back and took the fourth.  We cheered as hard as we could but Steph lost the fifth 2 - 3

Our opponents ditched us for dinner but we sat down for some steak egg and chips at the bar.

Last weeks report - 7th A League vs. Randburg (aka. The Who?!)

A warm welcome to the two new members of our club, Ben Veldsman and Herkie Sandenberg – some of you might have encountered them in the Handicap tournament already. They have been slotted into the 7thleague team as well as our new team members Brennan Babb and Lyal White. We wish you success in your new team and squash family.
-

This was not the way things were supposed to start – no COTY nomination for my motivational speech – no e-mail from John about the first game of the season (sent but not received) – no website entries on ezscoreboard to confirm match arrangements or even who the opposing team comprised…oh yes!…what team?…”The Who” that’s who!

Our team pitched - ready for battle – waited – waited a bit longer – phoned – left message – waited for the return call “Oh no, we haven’t managed to put a team together yet” was the belated reply.

We had this problem with Randburg two years ago when they couldn’t put a team together and had to withdraw from the league mid-season. So hats-off to our chairman who manages to get it all together (in time) so that Chamber Exiles is represented and that our proud name is not dragged through the mud. Here, here John!

So, with the absence of our opposition, we set about having a practice – Brennan chased Paul, Steph chased Herkie, Brennan chased Gary, Gary chased Ben, Herkie chased Brennan and Gary & Ben tried some drills with some help from Chris but we still managed to stuff them up.

Report from Lyal in the US – “Don't despair, I am in training having just emerged undefeated at the Phoenix Open - squash not golf - and firmly committed 2013 to the year of squash “.

All in all, a pretty good sweat and team introduction.

My latest update (Thursday) from John is “Gary, I just had a call from Harry Goslett of Randburg apologizing profusely for the no-show. Apparently their 8th lge side from last year got promoted and didn’t realise that they had shifted to a Tuesday match. “

Not quite sure what to make of this but I have opted to schedule a re-match in the interests of squash – the team has mixed feeling about this but I maintain that winning isn’t everything – 16 points might boost our standing but maintaining dignity and pride and keeping your chin up might be more valuable at the end-of-the-day. So – yes they screwed-up but that doesn’t mean we can’t give somebody the chance to redeem themselves.

Motivational Quote: - “If you are on the battlefield and the opposition doesn’t show – doesn’t mean you can’t turn on your own!”

8th League vs. Modderfontein

What a start to the season; two matches, two wins and this week a 16!
Stratford Z wearing the #1 shirt cruises past Greg (the coaching is paying dividends) but has a hiccup at game three. The game is not over till the fat lady sings and we are a team so joining us for the after match meal will go down well in the future. 3-1 up.
On an adjacent court, Mike H takes on their #4, Angelo. Despite the training Mike is playing like a wally and won 3 egg, so you can imagine how his opponent played. Mike saved a game ball in the third which was a relief as he might have squandered the match. 3-0 up.
George B takes on Warren and wins easily with his fiercesome two handed backhand playing a major roll. It was Warren’s birthday and true to form George played him a friendly fourth and still did not let him win! Shame, 3-0 up.
Lastly a rejuvenated Peter LeR (so slim, moving like a rabbit and no fear of his insides falling) takes to the court and plays a ding dong match, loosing the 1st, winning the 2nd, loosing the 3rd and winning the 4th and 5th. These despite some claims that he could reach the ball on several occasions that were denied by the Chamber ref. Yes he could have reached them if he was playing with the shaft length of belly putter! Also there was hold up in play as it looked like there were two balls on court, maybe a lepidopterologist can help? A big one in the Deep South.
The opposition did provide us with bevies but did not join us for a meal, so Dopio Zero won out.

Squash Tip of the Week
Always play with a length. Two reasons; it limits you opponent for options on the return and the girl friend likes it!

Match score: 16-3

PS There was much analysis on the reason for the win and comments such as “Maybe the rested players should play golf every Wednesday, stick with hockey and take time recovering from a knee op!” were uttered.

9th LEAGUE “SPARTANS” vs Soweto

We should have seen the signs, as clear as daylight. A team that was bumped up from 10th league last year and a number four player of 10 years of age.
Ready we were, all wound up by our resident psychologist/motivator and PT instructor and a clear instruction from the much loved captain to be victorious once again. But not to happen, so here follows a (short and unpleasant version) on evens as they unfold in Killarney c/c.
Position 4
Willie against Amu (10 years of age). No sweat, like clubbing seals, is Willies thoughts as he walked on the court. Play it cool and a  victory in 10 minutes. The little okey had different thoughts, well focused and a serve that is high and difficult to return,  And so it went on and on. One down, two down, three down and Willie (and the rest of the team) was getting worried. Aag maar dit is OK, dis net die eerste speeler en ons sal op maak en verder beheer vat.
Position  3
So the next Spartan walked on the court, Leslie the Spartan Porra. A gallant attempt, running, ducking and even diving, but to no avail. A by far superior Goliath, rolled the court with our much beloved Porra. Two games down.
Position 2
Chris was now against their captain, Norman. By now a bit nervous but begeestert by the will to win, he played with gust. Norman played well and calculated. Maar nie vandag nie, Boerseun - rolled by a better contender in the northern part of town.    The (best team in the world) Chambers 9th was now in the proverbial dwang. Three – nil.
Position 1
Kobus, our number one was up against their teams coach, Julius. Kobus is at best form of his life and we relied on a face saving victory game here. Kobus tried I must add. It is not in his nature to take (any) losing game light harted. Kobus did take one game but alas another game down to the Spatrats.

Thus Soweto = 3 (actually 4 Chris – counting as well as playing a problem)
Chambers = 0
Ai, ai tog

Overall result Lost 1 - 16

10th A vs Jeppe

We haven’t played a Jeppe Quondam team in the last twenty years so it was quite nice to visit a different venue for a change, but, having said that we all left at the end of the evening saying that now we know why we are members of Chamber Exiles. There was little to zero spirit in the club, the courts are shabby, the ambiance poor and the hospitality as bad! We arrived to be told that they would sponsor us 1 drink and we were welcome to stay for their pub supper but would have to pay for our meal. ONE DRINK!! Eish! Anyway we accepted the deal and told them that we would reciprocate on the return match and sponsor them each ONE drink at Chamber. Our supporters club – Des [buggered shoulder] and John [bronchitis] were on hand to cheer us on. By the way, they paid for their own drinks.

Anyway things didn’t get any better:

No 1 – Brian. Frustrating himself terribly, made far too many mistakes and lost 1/3. He took the second game and we all thought he would take control of the match then but the mistakes crept in and he lost the next two games. He is off on a well earned two week sojourn down to the KZN south coast where, hopefully he’ll do a little jogging each day to keep that fantastic physique of his in shape!

No 2 – Paddy. Our saving grace last week by being the only one to win, didn’t have much of a game losing badly against a useful youngster – 0/3.

No 3 – Johan. Took a game to warm up, then won the 2nd and got quite excited only to be beaten in the 3rd but did have a good game in the 4th although he went down 14/16. Nice match but lost 1/3.

No 4 – Bob. Played a new member who has only been in SA for a few months [ex Netherlands] and refused to play with a double yellow dot ball. Said he had never played with it before and had only ever used a green dot. Bob, a little surprised but not wanting to make a scene said that he similarly, had never played with a green dot but whatever... This was a mistake as the balls are quite different and although he took the first game 16/14 struggled to get used to the ball. Lost the second game 12/15 but by then getting used to the green dot, took the 3rd and 4th games.

Overall result: Lost 5 - 13

First match of the season was against the clever boys. They came up from 3rd. It was a night of love. No loser won a game.
First up Peter against Andreas, the luck went with Andreas who beat Peter.
Next up Stan, no real pressure, Stan won.
Then Gary against the other twin. Games were close but Gary won.
Lastly Jeff against a newly engaged Mark. Jeff snuck in in spite of Mark’s fiancé’s cheering.

4th B (in name only) vs Parkview

The newly promoted 4th B arrived at the arch-rivals raring to go.
The Silver Fox went on 1st against young Bongi. A tough battle ensued but the wily fox triumphed 3-1.
Ron next against a runner who couldn’t run cos of a bad knee. Ron was cruising until he pulled a calf muscle at the end of the 3rd. Rested in the 4th and then went for broke in the 5th. Good 3-2 win, the cripple beating the cripple.
The King on next raced into a 2-0 lead before his opponent could wake up. But wake up he did taking the next 2. The King though wasn’t going to take this lying down and played some great squash to go 14-9 up in the 5th. Game set and match we thought. BUT ………..an amazing  “un-royal” comeback saw The King lose 16-14 for a 3-2 loss.
Lastly Rich against Kuben. Rich lost the 1st but the faster younger legs wore Kuben down and Rich cruised in 3-1. As usual not a hair out of place.

Overall result: Won 14 – 7
