Summer league and Club Champs

Last nights Club Championship finals were very entertaining with the Men's final especially producing some fantastic squash with Gareth and Kelvin showing that entertainment, skill and fun can go hand-in-hand. All the results are as follows:

Main Finals         Men      Kelvin beat Gareth         3-0
                          Ladies   Helena beat Heather      3-0

Plate Finals         Men      Vince vs Brennan (still to be played)
                          Ladies   Chrisna beat Alma           3-1

Wally Plate          Leslie beat Claude           3-0

Second Plate       Phil Alves beat Bruce       3-1

Third Plate           Vevek beat Robbie           3-0

Sh*gger Cup        Willem beat Jeff               3-0

At the Summer League finals the COTY (Clown of the Year) award went to Gary “Ear-Ear” for his motivational e-mail to his team members before the season started.

The Sportsman of the Year award was voted to the 10th League side of Bob, Paddy, Des, Keith, JohAn, Brian and John for their continued loyalty and  commitment to the club together with their team spirit and sportsmanship that they continually show. Most of the guys have been at the club for many years and the previous Sportsmen of the Year thought they deserved this recognition.

I hope you all have a great Christmas and New Year. See you in January for the Handicap tournament.

End of Gauteng League 2012

Last match reports below. Thanks to all the scribes who have amused us over the months. Also a big thanks to all the captains for organising their teams so efficiently.

Well done to the League Winners – Ladies 3rds and Mens 5ths (and maybe Mens 1sts)

Onwards (and upwards) to Summer League.

1st LEAGUE

Finished 3rd in the lge (before bonus points)

2nd LEAGUE vs Parkview

2nd League played Parkview away for our final league match.

  • First up was Captain Willem at No 3. Willem narrowly lost the first after an excellent come back (15-13), cleaned up in the second (15-5) which seemed to wake his opponent up in the third and fourth where there was little contest thereafter. Result: 3-1 loss for Chamber.

  • Next up Robbie at No 2. Robbie got a hiding from an on fire Steve Hughes. Result: 3-0 loss for Chamber.

  • Next up Mwansa at No 1 swopping in for Stan. Mwansa played Tom Blagden who was injured from the start but never really had any hope anyway. In compensating for his injury, Tom pulled another muscle and retired hurt before the end of the first game. Result: 3-0 win for Chamber.

  • With the scores at 6-4 to Parkview, Chamber needed a 3-0 victory for the win or a 3-1 win to take it points (which we should have won considering Mwansa only lost 2 points). Next up Jeff at No 4. Jeff had a very tough match against Steph Burgeer and some quality squash was played. Jeff won the first, lost the second, won the third and was so close to winning the fourth but came up just short 15-13. Unfortunately Jeff lost the fifth but it was a close contest. Result: 3-2 loss for Chamber.

Match result: 12 (9) -6 to Parkview which doesn’t reflect how close we came to a win!

Overall result: Lost 6 - 12

4th League vs CCJ

No.1 Ryan arranged to play early to allow him time to pack before leaving for Kilimanjaro. Seems he had a lot of packing to do, and made a lot of unforced errors losing 3-0.

No.2 Vevek against  a tall Daryl made a lot of unforced errors and with too many loose shots lost the first. Got back into the match in the second, but could not sustain that and lost the next two to lose 3-1.

No.3 Dave, after a few weeks recovering from Inter Prov, started comfortably and won the first, and was well up in the second before being pipped at the post. That meant we could not win, so only pride was at stake. After losing the third, and wining the fourth, it took a bit of convincing to get Dave on for the 5th, and unfortunately Gordon managed to bump and unsettle Dave enough to finish the match 16-14. Lost 3-2

No.4 Chris vH, who had tried valiantly to get Andrew to play, concentrated on playing squash, and managed to win 3-1.

Result Lost 13-6 (I think), but we should end in 6th or 7th position with no risk of promotion or relegation.

Overall result: Lost 13 – 6

5th League vs Jeppe

CHAMPIONS ALREADY but we kindly decided to play the last match against Jeppe who loaded their side to play us.

Silver Fox on first (again) – played Warren who had beaten Jeff at IPT a few weeks earlier and made sure everybody knew it (several times). After he won the first 23-21 he re-iterated that he had beaten Jeff, and after narrowly wining the 2nd, Jeff’s name was heard to be mentioned again. The 3rd went to the Silver Fox however and Warren did admit that he’d only beaten Jeff 3-1 and that I was probably nearly as good as Jeff. After losing the 4th 15-3, Warren casually mentioned that he thought I was a much better player than Jeff. When he lost the 5th as well, Jeff’s name was not mentioned at all!!!. 3-2 to the Silver Fox

G-Bow on next and at his imperious best against a tough player Bruce. G-Bow never looked like losing this for a 3-1 win.

FurG also played an imperious game, having a blip in the 2nd but nearly won the 3rd 15-0 (was 13-0 up before losing a point)

The King on last at No 1 with nothing to play for didn’t play at his regal best and succumbed 3-1 to an on-fire ringer, Anton.

Overall result: Won 13 – 7

6th League B vs Bryanston

Ending on a high!

Great match against Bryanston, with a change to the fortunes of the team.  Facing relegation we were all a little dubious at the start, we had two very entertaining matches at 1 and 2.  Worthy of the war stories which will no doubt be talked about over beers in years to come.

1. Bruce v Joseph, epic 3-2 win for Bruce, setting us up nicely for the rest of the evening (he played first). Some of these rallies were so long that mountains were ground to dust and giant redwoods grew from seed to full height during the course of a point. Bruce’s take-no-prisoners game plan has seen him end the season like a champion.

4. Phil v Doogan, a lucky 3-0 for Phil against a hard hitting but mistake-prone opponent. Lucky in the sense that Phil didn't have a 4th game in him. Phil came back strongly from a dismal loss last week and forced a significant number of errors on his opponent and took the match fairly easily. Chamber 2 rubbers up and looking good.

3. Brennan v Cedric the Belgian, a 0-3 pounding for Brennan. Cedric the Belgian was just hitting it too hard and too consistently to give Brennan a look-in. Brennan unfortunately drew the energizer bunny as an opponent and did not have too much of a chance despite his great form at present. Things back in the balance then.

2. Mark v Ian, 3-1 to Mark. Last match of the evening with Mark needing a win to keep us out of the relegation zone. Ian, another hard hitter, provided strong resistance, but some very consistent squash from Mark kept him at bay.

An satisfying 12-6 win for us, which will hopefully be enough to keep us in the 6th league!!

Overall result: Won 12 - 6

7th A League vs. Winchester Hills

I've loved, I've laughed and cried.
I've had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that;
And may I say - not in a shy way,
"No, oh no not me,
I did it my way".

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows -
And did it my way!

#1 – Paul against Dylan and we witnessed the BEST game I have ever seen Paul play!!! The pairing was brilliant as they are both there for the long haul and boy oh boy was it long – everything was chased down and returned and fetched and gathered, never overly flashy, just determined. Paul lost the first and I have to admit that I was worried that Paul looked disconsolate. But then the fight for supremacy in the second and then it was dogged determination that saw Paul through a closely contested third and although Dylan didn’t show it, I think he was just physically beaten in the fourth and Paul finished in style. What a great way to end his league season and show his class. Well done Paul! (3-1)

#4 - George always keen to get things moving along appropriates the court adjacent and takes on Running Rampant Ray and my understanding is that they chased each other around the court and then George let the match get away from him in the fifth. It sounded like a good fight and at least George gave a good account of himself for the evening after having gotten seriously lost trying to get there. To his credit George has earned himself the title of MVP (2012) as a result of the best overall average in the team. Thanks for your contribution George! (2-3)

#3 – Karel up against Cameron whom me-thinks could have been a ringer but not quite sure. Karel manages to find his own pace in a game where Cameron is pushing the tempo at every turn – unfortunately for Cameron along with the tempo comes the sound of repetitive TIN ringing in our ears as he seemed hell-bent on trying to leave an indelible mark in it. He gave away many points and Karel, despite his having had an overindulgent weeks break and adding a kilo or two, was moving rather well and picking up the shots with interest and played a very good game. Without too much drama he ended his season well with a much need
victory and the runner-up (non-existent) MVP title. Great improvement in the second half of the season boet! (3-1)

#2 – Gary against Brendon and this was not my night despite the fact that all I needed to do was win one game to seal the deal, I think I stormed out in front in all my games and even got to 14-12 in the third but just couldn’t do the business. I am so bitterly disappointed in myself, I am still trying to forgive myself and remind myself that this is supposed to be a game played for the enjoyment of “the game”. I might have done it “my way” but it certainly wasn’t the “best way”! I have heard of captains going down with the ship but I think I might be one of the elite few who are responsible for taking the ship down! Over and out! (0-3)

8 Games each and a points count again – and as fate (and the gods) would have it, we lose by 4 points. Crappie cappie not-so-happy.

I am convinced we are destined for relegation but the team is holding out for the miracle to happen and grace being granted…

Thanks for a great year team and for your kind support!

Our names might not have been inscribed in the history books but they will go down as “my team” in my first year as captain. Michael - Steph - George - Karel - Paul may you have a great Summer League!

Ear-Ear
   Gary

10th LEAGUE

Finished and came 7th (I think) in the 10th and 11th league play-offs.

Ladies 4th LEAGUE 03

Finished 4th in the lge

Ladies 4th LEAGUE 02

Finished 3rd in the lge

Ladies 3rd LEAGUE

League finished and WON

1st LEAGUE vs Old Eds 01

Great win for Chamber’s first league side against Old Eds. Going into the match Old Eds were 9 points clear of us at the top of the table so the odds were against us

On first Gareth won 3-1

Next Frankie wasn’t good enough against Thoboki and lost 3-0…………….and that was the league lost unfortunately.

Kelvin beat Christo Potgieter 3-1

Mwansa had a physical battle against his opponent but eventually won 3-1

So we ended up 3rd eventually as Bryanston got 14 points against Parkview.

1st           Old Eds –             181
2nd          Bryanston –        180
3rd          Chamber -           178

BUT…………….there are still Marking and Refereeing points to be added on……………so maybe the Fat Lady hasn’t sung yet!!!!!!!

Overall result: Won 12 - 6

2nd LEAGUE vs CCJ

We played away at Woodmead, pretty decent facilities.
First up Gary vs Arthur. Again. Gary started well but couldn’t keep it up and lost in 5 from being well up in the 5th.
Then Stan played Mike. Again. Mike beat Stan in the first half, but this time Stan powered his way through.
Next up Robbie vs Alan. Robbie got a hiding in the first but fought back fantastically to win the next 2. Got another hiding in the 4th leaving the 5thto decide the match. Close, hard game with Robbie just pulling away at the end. Robbie really worked hard for this win.
Last up Willem against Chris Barry. This seemed like a gentle practice session for Willem.
First half they beat us 16-5. We got revenge.

Stan: 3-0
Robbie: 3-2
Gary: 2-3 (ONLY 1 to LOSE!)
Willem: 3-0

Overall result: Won 14 - 5

4th League vs Randburg

1 – Jeff Davidson versus Sven van Rie (L2 – 3) 15-4 6-15 12-15 15-7 12-15
A up and down affair with LOTS of smiles from Jeff and DEATHSTARES from Sven. With Jeff trailing 2-1 and requiring one more game to take the overall tie, he came to the party. Unfortunately the 5th was too much of a stretch.
2 – Vevek Iyer versus Craig Carter (L1 – 3) 15-8 9-15 9-15 7-15
Vevek hit the tin too much and did not have a good night out. He made up for it though by marking Sven’s match and matching Sven’s DEATHSTARES!!
3 – Andrew McKeaveney versus Ruben Venter (W3 – 2) 15-10 14-16 15-9 8-15 15-13
After this match being mistaken for FIRST LEAGUE match on numerous occasion, a good win by Andrew against a hard hitting opponent.
4 – Flip van Antwerpen versus Ricky Gomes (W3 – 0)15-13 15-5 15-12
Flip is on top of his game and has hit a golden patch. Destroyed his opponent 3-0.

Overall result: Won 11 – 8

5th League vs Winchester

We needed 14 points to win the league with 2 matches to play…………but with our Nos 1 and 2 away next week we wanted to finish it off this week. Our cause was helped when a phone call came in at 5.30 saying they only had 3 players. So 3 points in the bag already.

Silver Fox on first (again) – playing a wily old foe Alan Eve who I’ve played a good few times over the years. Alans tactics have always been to get in the way and wage phschological warfare and this match was no different. The marker was a novice and didn’t seem to realize he had to call the score but eventually with a bit of training from LG he came right and was equally bad for both players when he had to make a call. The games were close 15-13,13-15,15-13,14-16 until the 5th when Alan’s legs let him down and Silver romped in 15-8.

LG on next, had another tight affair, with his opponent Llewellyn chasing everything down, playing some great winners but also making a lot of silly mistakes. Again the match went to 5 and with LG 12-8 down in the 5th, things looked bleak. LG’s oppo though contrived to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by smashing a good few into the tin and letting LG sneak in to win 3-2. Life was good for LG.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrich on last playing the novice marker who also turned out to be a novice player. The match didn’t last long as Rich wanted to see some of the 1st lge match. An easy 3-0 win with not a hair out of place (but then again Rich doesn’t have a hair out of place after a tough 5-setter!!!)

So that gave us 16 points and an uncatchable lead at the top. WELL DONE THE 5TH LEAGUE TEAM.

We look forward to matches against our 4th league colleagues who have already been named the SS (snot-snivellers) and the gauntlet has already been laid down.

Overall result: Won 16 – 6

6th League A vs Suburbs

Bad day at the office for 6A, with the only win coming from Stuart who's opponent was raised from his sick bed at 20h00 to play. 3 - 0. Slightly more satisfying than a  walk-over.

Outstanding effort from Gerhard at 1 against Andre - nothing was said but I personally believe a dubious double bounce was missed when Gerhard was a point away from winning the match.  2-3

Gavin battled against the portly Kyle who used trivial, tongue in cheek disputes to gather his breath. 0 - 3

Manie started well but Greg Snr was too wiley for him.1 - 3.

Overall result: Lost  6 - 12

6th League B vs Old Eds

Very tough match against a side that upon first impressions did not exude fitness and health.  All games were hard fought with one exception, Phil played Rael at number 4 and did not see much of the ball.  Overall results were disappointing

Bruce vs Jason: Won 3-1. Bruce played like a champ and got just reward.

Mark vs Ian: Lost 2-3. Spectacle of note. Only 2 points in it at the end – they’ll go your way next season Mark.

Brennan vs Leon (?): Lost 2-3. Could have taken this one but lack of practise proved costly at critical times. Brennan came out on top in points, but not in games.

Phil vs Rael: Lost 0-3. Creamed. Phil is not impressed…

So there’s one match left and we’re in 3rd last position. Gotta keep out of the relegation zone.

Overall result: Lost 7 - 13

7th A League vs. Wits

It is not pleasant being down to three team members and scrambling to get a squad together. Your sister team is down with injuries of their own - 9th league team are injured and some writing exams - 6th league have team members abroad or with a broad and finally saved by Louis courtesy of Stuart Vey who bent over backwards to help out. Just when you think you can relax cause all your ducks are in a row then you get a message from the opposition saying "come early, we are all ready for you" so you phone everyone and organise early arrivals etc etc etc - and I thought that being the cappie was going to be fun! Methinks it might be crappie being the cappie.

#1 - Louis on against Steven and I think that coming down a league is not a nice thing to do as it puts all kinds of pressure on you to perform and as we all know performance anxiety has made mice of many a man...Steven plays a good game and leaves Louis feeling like he just doesn't have an answer for him - at 2 down Louis is almost despondent but finds some tighter lines and basic play coming to his aid and he manages to pull one back but then goes down in the forth. (1-3)
#4 - George rushes ahead in the first game against Roy and is brimming with confidence on the adjacent court and when next I look in to check progress he is suddenly 1-2 down. Roy’s boasting on and off court is obviously on top form and unfortunately George does his stats no favours and also goes down in four. (1-3)
#3 - Now the pressure has shifted back to Steph and myself playing on adjacent courts. By the time I start my match Steph has already won the first so I have some comfort that things can swing our way. I did not see any of his match but Steph pulled out a 3-1 win against wham bam Sanjay and presumably showed that power with control goes a long way - which then shifts the attention back to crappie cappie. (3-1)
#2 - As if getting a team together to play on the right night, at the right (amended) time wasn't enough!!! Now I have to deliver the ‘Captains Innings’ and fortunately I win the first and although I let things get away from me in the second I manage to pull it back and eke out a win and now knowing that I need to win the third to avoid the points count - I just got too tired to fight and Jaycee puts pay to my dream innings – damn blast!. Fortunately Jaycee makes one too many errors in the fourth and I cruse to a decisive points scoring win. (3-1)

For the first time in many crappie moons we win the points count 204-198. YAY I hear you screaming – finally!

Quotable quote - the match ain't over till the middle order sings…and the song is sung to the tune of MONTY PYTHONS "every sperm is sacred" substituting the word sperm with point.

Crappie cappie feeling happy.

9th LEAGUE vs Bryanston

Ons was so reg soos die boer se roer. The 2 x Boertjies and an Englishman was professionally motivated by our very own   man of Portuguese descendant  --  Leslie - with a unpronounceable Porra surname.    He spoke to us, he send us pictures he made us sing songs of motivation and all this to win our last game of the year. MAAR in goeie Boere maniere het ek nooit vir die Porra gese en verstaan nie n word nie. I have to admit though, the motivational pictures (of scantily dressed cheerleaders) now those I understood. Thanks Leslie

Back to the evening of squash.

Player 1 at position 1.
Chambers – Chris   = 2  vs   Bryanston–  Hayley   = 3
Unfair unfair, ons boertjies weet nie hoe om teen geledere van die teenoorgestelde geslag te speel nie. They were made to be pregnant en om kaalvoet in die kombuis te wees. Soos my oorlede oom Poela my geleer het. But I held my pose, and concentrated on the game of squash. Once I had that mind set it was easier and with cunningness befitting a boertjie in his prime, the first game was won. Hayley hailed from New Zealand and the All Black blood rebelled to this boertjie and with amazing power and accuracy she kept the ball away from her opponent and had the upper hand in the second game. Nou is die boertjie begeesterd. Geen All Black kan kers opsteek met n Springbok nie. The Captain did justice to his title and slowed the game down. That helped and  2-1 to Chambers. Jong nou is die meisietjie opgewerk, dis die kant toe, dis daai kant toe dis alle kante toe, en die Kaptein het nie n clue nie. 2-2. My official stance is, as home game captain and being the last game of the year, I gave (a bit) in and she won the game. (in real life I never had a chance, but don’t tell anybody. )

Player 2 at position 2
Chambers – Kobus  = 2  vs   Bryanston–  Gerald   = 3
Nou kyk hier is nog n boertjie wat n ‘bad day at the office’ gehad het. Gee my die raket en gee my die bal, die game is oor voordat jy jou oe kan uitvee, se Kobus. And with that said he climbed in and with 360 degree turns, fairy jumps to get the lobs and sneaky drops he was ahead 2 love in no time. Now the background is that Gerald and Hayley (No 1) is married and you take on a man’s family pride when his down 2 love.  Die arme boertjie (hy rook mos) saw his stamina run out with Gerald fighting back. Two games each and Kobus vowing never ever to smoke again went on court with bubble gum legs. He fought back and at time it was 8 each. Jy kan dit doen ou maat – was the support from the crowds, the Porra said something incoherent and the Englishman was shouting in support. But Gerald and Kobus’s cigarettes won the final game.

Player 3 at position 3
Chambers – Leslie   = 3  vs   Bryanston–  Matt    = 1
The Porra was devastating. He is, of course, a nomination of the Small Business Awards, and for those John Robbie fans would have heard him on 702 last Friday morning. So back to squash. Poor Matt was is the firing line and had no skills to match. I have to add, Leslie’s game improved tremendously in the last two months.   Well done Leslie!!!!

Player 4 at position 4
Chambers – Roger  = 2  vs   Bryanston–  Matt    = 3
Our world mining traveller still had lead in the legs from his last international visit. And the Matt was about 13 years old, and energy to match. Roger played well and pulled out some well deserved returns, but his legs failed him in the fifth.  Roger really tried hard.

End result is          - Chamber =  1 vs  Bryanston   = 3

En did is die einde van n goeie en welverdiende muurbal jaar. The team will end middle for didle in the 9th league. Dankie vir die Boertjies wat hul man gestaan het en vir die Englesmanne (kind regards Anthony far south) en al die ander nationaliteite  wat die span opgemaak het om in lyn te bly met die land se reenboog beleid --  Baie Dankie

Cheers see ya next year!!

Chris van Zyl

Next @ # 4. John – also had a good run and also managed to take the third. 1/3

1st LEAGUE vs Parkview

Gareth on first against Gary Plumstead had to use all his guile and concentration (and physchological mind-games with the ref) to win  3-2 (16-14 in the 5th)

Mwansa was a class apart and crushed his opponent 3-0

Young Kelvin then on against the veteran Craig - battled hard but Craig seems to have the edge on Kelvin whenever they play. Craig won 3-2

Frankie then played his match of the season to win 3-1 and win the match for the team

Overall result: Won 14 - 6

2nd LEAGUE vs Bryanston

First half we beat them 14-6. Last night we lost by a game. (No Stan.)

First up was Willem against Claire Nitch (again). Carbon copy of first match – Willem 2-1 up and then someone p’s Claire off and Willem doesn’t see the ball for the rest of the match.

Gary next against (an on fire) Andrew Copeland. 3-0 down in under half an hour.

Jeff played (the player formerly known as Boom-Boom) Bert Hipner. Needed to win 3-0 to counter Gary’s match, but we all know Jeff doesn’t like to win 3-0. Jeff thought of making it his usual 5-setter but managed to fend off multiple game points in the 4th to win the match.

Last up Robbie against Michael (again). Robbie beat him 3-1 in the first match. This time Michael was 2-1 up and then tweaked a glute. Retired hurt.

Willem: 2-3
Robbie: 3-2
Gary: 0-3

5th League vs Southern Suburbs

Our last hard match of the season (theoretically)

The King was forced to go on first after just having had his “tea” and nobody else there at 7h00. The first 2 games were quickly lost and life was looking bad. But the King isn’t called the King for nothing and the gears started to click in. The 4th was close but he snuck in and the 5th was even closer but again he sneaked in. Well done the King on yet another “royal” winning gala performance.

G-Bow on next, against young Kyle, who looks about 12 but is actually 16. A good 3-2 win for G-Bow.

Grrrrrrrrich justifying his No 2 ranking thrashed his opponent 3-0.

LG then on last nervously knowing that if he lost, the 16-pointer would be thrown away. Not wanting the losing mantle and certain ridicule from his team-mates, LG decided life was good…………….and won 3-1.
