POSTPONEMENT OF MATCHES DUE TO THE MASTERS TOURNAMENT

Due to the Masters tournament being held from the 7th - 12th September,

all league matches (Ladies & Mens) will be moved to the week of the 17th - 18th - 19th September.

With the exception of Mens 2nd league who have until the end of September to

play their match.

Weekly Update

Well done to the George Bowen “Dream Team”. I certainly can’t remember any Chamber side going 12 matches without losing, with the possible exception of the Chamber 1992 1st league side which had Chris Dittmar (World No 2) and Mike Tootill in the team – but records have been lost over the years so I’m not sure. Can they keep going to the end of the season?? Watch this space.

12th LEAGUE vs UJ

No1- Geoff, not yet match fit after his lay-off having surgery to his right eye. Not too sure the doctor put the correct one back as Geoff spent the night (actually only about 15 minutes) hitting the wrong ball while the match ball whizzed past him! Lost 0/3 scoring only 5 points in the three games.

No2- Brian, put up a better fight but was out-played by a very neat young player. Also went down 0/3 but did score 20 points. At a point in the second game he was up 8/6 but failed to close the game.

No3- Paddy, did not look comfortable at all also going down 0/3.

No4- Bob, with the team crashing around him he picked up the glove and headed out to salvage some pride. Tough match. Took the first 10/8, the second comfortably 9/0, in the third lost his way a bit and went down 6/9 but fought back bravely to take the fourth game 10/8. Good win to avert a 16 pointer against.

Final result lost 3-12

11th LEAGUE vs Wits Univ

The stellar performance of last week improved immeasurably this week, with everyone winning .... some points.

1. Phil A down 0-3 (about 8 points won)
2. Nigel M down 0-3 (about 6 points won)
3. Graeme C down 0-3 (some more points, but not many)
4. Keith A down 0-3 (about 11 points won)

So congrats to Keith!

But we'll need a little more to prevent losing 0-16 next week.

Final result 0 - 16

9th League B vs. Chamber A (Postponed match)

Firstly congratulations must go to the Chamber A side in the 9th league who thumped us 3-1 as follows:-

Graham Vermaak won 3-2 against Mark van Niekerk, an outstanding game and reflects the high quality of squash at Chambers.

Peter Fillmore lost 0-3 to Paul Fallon, Fillmore was victim of the strained calf muscle that has hit our players 4 times this season and had to retire hurt in the 2nd game.

Peter Le Roux lost 0-3 to Bruce Bydawell, Peter had the beating of Bruce but not the fitness to do it.

Gavin Martin lost to Mike Hunt, Gavin was flummoxed by Mike’s game until the 3rd but was able to take the 4th game losing 10-8.

Overall result 4-14

Well done to George’s side who should go on to win the league.

9th League B vs. Edenvale

The second result was again a lost to Edenvale. It was 2 all in matches but we lost in the number of games won.

Graham Vermaak won 3-1

Peter Fillmore lost 0-3

Peter Le Roux lost 1-3

Gavin Martin won 3-1

Overall result 7-10

Match score: 7-10

10th league vs. Southern Suburbs

After narrowly losing to Suburbs earlier in the season, last nights win was very satisfying to give us our third win in a row. Of particular note is Dylan’s desire to get a good workout by always losing the first two games before taking the last three. Steph needed to win two games for us to take the match but he kept us in suspense by going 1-2 down before trouncing his opponent 9-0 in the fourth. Richard promises to practice more regularly and Phil, playing his usual No.3 slot, continues to be matched against the weakest opponent of each side. The excellent peri-peri chicken made up for the long drive to the extreme southern tip of Johannesburg.

  1. Steph 2-3
  2. Dylan 3-2
  3. Phil P 3-0
  4. Richard 1-3

Match result: 118, to the good guys again

9th League A vs Modderfontein

12 out of 12 wins. Why did the chicken cross the road? To get the other side – wrong.

Once we found the courts, weaved our way through the internal labyrinth, watched Nick loose the first match of the night paving the way for the rest of us having to win (which we did), we were royally entertained at a restaurant in Edenvale dining on Κλήφτικο. We wish Nick (be careful of Shirley Valentine) and his family a great Greek sojourn and would be pleased if he could keep fit or even better get fitter as it was his leg division, not the middle one, that let him down for the loss after being 7-2 up in the fifth. Our captain spent little time in whizzing past his opponent and Michael struggled to maintain his 100% record by leaving it to the fifth to take the rubber. Bruce, our marathon man, training for the Moscow marathon, kept running and running and delivered a clinical performance after being down 8-2 in the first.

Squash Commentary of the Week

Back to the question which prompted the following answer from Mugabe “Stop that chicken! It must be repossessed together with the farm it belongs to; and the farm opposite the road where it was going to; and all the chickens on both farms. Repossess it all and it's nobody's business what I do in my country. It is the British's fault for bringing chickens here anyway

#1: Nick played Paul 2-3: 9-2, 6-9, 1-9, 9-6, 7-9

#2: Bruce played Sean 3-0: 10-9, 9-5, 9-1

#3: Michael played Vaughn 3-2: 4-9, 9-4, 9-2, 1-9, 9-5

#4: George played Piet 3-0: 9-5, 9-3, 9-1

Match score: 14-5

Erratum. In last week’s report the match score should have read 14-4 not 14-3. The sports writer takes no responsibility for the error and despite Chamber B desperately needing the points, it is unlikely to help them but might make them feel better about the thrashing and trouncing and hiding and defeat they received

Well done to all of us for achieving some sort of a modern day Chamber Exiles record - 12 out of 12 wins!!

Message from Nick Papa

Well done to all of us for achieving some sort of a modern day Chamber Exiles record - 12 out of 12 wins!!

I hope we can continue to win in my absence - I can only try and keep fit on a diet of feta cheese, olives and ouzo (and Shirley......).

Michael - well done on your spelling of Kleftiko in Greek. You just need some further instruction on the difference between an "ipsilon" and an "epsilon". This will sort out your Greek dyslexia?!

I'm hoping that by the time I get back in September, the league title will be ours and that I won't have to unnecessarily sacrifice myself at #1 again.

Cheers to you all - I will be thinking of you every Wednesday night, with a (ouzo) tear in my eye and Greek delicacy nearby!

9th League A vs. Chamber B (Postponed Match)

The A Team version.

What can one say; if you are good you are good! We beat the SS Chamber B side in the long awaited, postponed match against our sister side played at the Johannesburg Country Club. The postponement was ‘cos they were not well and it would appear that they are still not well. Michael went on first at 5.30 and won despite a stumble in the third to Gavin, who plays every sport in the world, and was recovering from stiffness following a hectic hockey match at the weekend. Leg muscles from running or arm muscles from drinking. BB takes the court, plays like star which assists Peter in raising his game but not enough to win. B comes back from 8-2 down in the third to race past 10-9 and win in a convincing, professional manner. A real tit of a match and BB is Bruce Bydawell not Bridget Bardot. Paul plays Peter. Peter was not a Fill in for Digby (The A team wishes him a speedy recovery) although he suffered the same fete pulling his wire, sorry his hammy in the second and wished he could have done More. For those who are not quite so sharp, a surname pun! Lastly Graham went on to mitigate the bragging rights and succeeded slightly with “a real hundinga”. Quote from BB who was the scorer and had to often consult, not always of his choice, the committee of referees that were supporting him. Graham got the first 2 and Mark got the second 2 and the Graham got the last in well over an hour, which screwed up any chance of a meal. So they owe us one.

Squash Commentary of the Week

Under floor heating is fantastic. Chamber Exiles Committee should consider the same!

#1: Mark played Graham 2-3: 5-9, 7-9, 9-4, 9-7, 9-4

#2: Paul played Peter Fillmore 3-0: 9-7, 9-3, 9-0

#3: Bruce played Peter Le Roux 3-0: 9-6, 9-4, 10-9

#4: Michael played Gavin 3-1: 9-4, 9-4, 2-9, 10-8

Match score: 14-3

8th League v Old Eds

Chamber vs Old Eds. The mighty haven’t quite fallen yet, but we’re teetering on the edge. Nice warm courts suited Duncan who went on first at 1 and won 3-0 after a close first game. Stuart on next who went down 3-0 after losing the first two 9-7 and 10-8. Next was Manie at 3, who was unfortunately also beaten 3-0 after a close first game. So that was the match. Last on was Andy who came up against the best player in the team. The warm courts didn’t suit Andy who managed to take a game against a player who had already played a 5th league game that night (he was apparently filling in and normally plays 8th)!

So, no luck for us, 12-4 down after beating them 13-3 last time.

Match result: 4-12

7th League vs Southern Suburbs

An evening of 'no problems' against a team that will be good once they get over their acne (all aged either 16 or 17).

  • On first, at 1, Richard gave their no.1 a lesson in squash 9-5, 9-2, 9-0. The last game was just class and the scores betray the difficulty factor. Flip gave away two games to this guy in the first round. In the end, 'no problems'.
  • On second, at 2 (we like structure), inviciPhil continued his indomitable run, being very generous this week and giving away a load of unnecessary points 9-4, 9-2, 9-1. We'll mark him down for not playing with that killer instinct, it should have been 27-0. However, in the end, 'no problem'.
  • On third, at 3 (is the team run by an actuary?), Gavin B gave a masterclass in 'Ming the Merciless', winning 9-0, 9-3, 9-0. I missed most of this because I went to get changed as they started warming and by the time I got back, Gavin was already 2-0 up. 'No problem'.
  • On fourth at 4 (because I like to know where I stand), occasionally-playing-these-days captain Bullen went on against the youngster of the team (complete with a pre-game change of nappy). This kid seemed to have a little more gumption and if it wasn't for a couple of unforced errors having driven me to 8-8 in the first, we might have lost the first game of the evening. Ever the slow starter, I warmed up in the second and in the end it was 10-8, 9-2, 9-1. No problem.

An evening of clinical finishing 16-0. It was all over before 21h30 and the boys were off home to sleep. Not sure about the youngsters from Suburbs though... In true Suburbs style, the closing chirp from the parents was "hope it wasn't your tyres that we slashed...". Only in the South.

Match result : 16-0

5th LEAGUE vs Parkview

5th league played at home against Parkview.

Jeff moved up to 4th (not that he got a game since Germiston could not raise a full side) and our Captain used his prerogative to sit out after a tough Masters tournament in Nelspruit. Sorry for Chris and Dave who also went to the tournament. So a much depleted side to start with. Dave went on first against Chris Grainger and after a slow start (Nelspruit!!) losing the first game 8-10 went on to win quite comfortably 3-1. Chris went to five AGAIN winning 9-7 in the fifth against Kuben Naidoo (35 points each). Where does he find the energy to want to force it to five almost every week? Thankfully a blood sample has not been requested by the opposition! Fergus hung in against the running "smarty gobbler" Alex to win in 5. Then came Rin Tin Tin Ryan. Only winning one point in the first two games!! We had to take him aside and explain that although it sounds good smashing the tin, for some reason the marker does not award points for good sound. Ryan then clawed one back to eventually go down to the good fetch Riaan. Final result a win 3-1 in games and 13-8 points.

Match Result: 13-8

4th LEAGUE vs Germiston

4th Played Germiston at Germiston, the only team to beat us in the first round.

At 3 in the afternoon the Germiston captain phoned and asked for a postponement, as he couldn’t get 4 players. The team agreed not to postpone and Willem and Gary went to play. With 2 walkovers, we only just snuk in.

Willem lost to Kevin de Lange 0-3

Gary lost to Brian Schutte 1-3

Trevor had a walkover 3-0

Jeff had a walkover 3-0

Match Result: 9-6

Ladies 4th LEAGUE 02 vs Northcliff

Lynda 3-2

Caroline 3-2

Claire 3-2

Janine 0-3

They equalled us in games, had more points than us but we won more matches

Poor Caroline was the last to play and the pressure was on her - playing Lynda de Villiers who is very good at reading your game

Overall result 12-9

Ladies 4th LEAGUE 01 vs Pirates

Lisa won 3-0

Julie won 3-2 (after a hard weekend in Nelspruit)

Jenny won 3-1

Chrisna won 3-0

Overall result 16-3

Squash Court Repairs

The door of court 5 has been replaced with new (very expensive) hinges. Although this sounds like a simple job, it took Chris van Heeswijk many hours to complete as the new hinges were a slightly different size from the old ones. Thanks a lot Chris.

The holes in Courts 1 and 2 have been patched. They haven’t been painted yet until we see how the filling lasts. Thanks to Geoff Vienings for doing this.

Weekly Update

The highlight of the week appears to be the phoenix like appearance of Ron Hagger who started his comeback with what was supposed to be a gentle knock with the 5th league team who had a bye. Did he take it easy to start with – don’t be daft, once on court the competitive streak clicked in and Ron gave his all (which admittedly wasn’t much – but hey, you have to start somewhere). Amazingly all muscles survived to play again. And play they did - in the Nelspruit Masters tournament over the weekend. Watch the web-site for the tournament report and photos.

12th LEAGUE vs Pirates

Pirates phoned on Wednesday morning to say that they could not raise a team and either we could take the points or re-schedule.

We took the decision in a general meeting of members that as there are no more bye's this season we would be inconvenienced by rescheduling and therefore we would take the points and possibly try and arrange a friendly at the end of the season. We all know this won't happen though!

So the RESULT was a WIN - 16-0.

Final result lost 16 - 0

11th LEAGUE vs Wendywood

Wendywood rochambeaued us something horrible. Galling stuff. And no I'm not making excuses, but I swear the paint on their walls was extra sticky or something - ball was coming off at right angles. Definitely not Dulux Wall 'n All.

But glad to have Nigel back - he walked his match no worries.

Phil A: 2-3 (after being 2-1 up!)
Nigel: 3-1 (comfy return to action)
Greg: 2-3 (fought hard, winning the fourth 10-9)
Keith: 0-3 (hard luck Keith! Your opponent should've been playing two at least)

Result: a 7-13 kick in the nads to bring us back down to earth.

Final result 7 - 13

10th league vs. Randburg

Earlier in the season Randburg extracted a rare tie against us by taking the final match 27-2. Although keen to avoid a repeat, we started on the back foot by being without our No 1 and No 2. No problem for the under-rated 10th league side …. 3-0, 3-0, 3-0 inside the first hour! The only player who met any resistance was poor Dylan. The Randburg No 1, who ensured they tied last time, is clearly not your average 10th league player. Despite Dylan playing to his usual energetic high standards he went down 0-3, but he played well enough to get 5 points in the match. Well played again lads and thank you to Naren for filling in for us. Now where are those 9B players hiding ……….?

  1. Dylan 0-3
  2. Naren 3-0
  3. Phil P 3-0
  4. Paul 3-0

Match result: 123, to the good guys

9th League A vs. Bryanston

Nailed Bryanston again but they have got better (16 in the first round, 12 this time) or has George “smoking” Bowen got worse. George, only looser on the night, graces the court and disgraces his advertising tin logo. Next Michael, keeping the clean sheet in tact, carries on from where he left off at his overwhelming, awe-inspiring, tremendous and awesome Lower Leagues Tournament Championship triumph and celebrates in a less noisy fashion so as not to disturb Chris. Nick plays well enough to win after his opponent called for one in the third; match and game points were exchanged three times. Standing out (as he always does) Paul made an appearance just in time to score the match, thanks, and earn himself a beer. Mark, team accountant using a hybrid 2048 by 4096 cell spreadsheet (for a small fee you can contact him for franchise rights), won for the third time this season. Doppio Zero was the nosh venue for a serving of burnt sole of pizza, later kindly replaced with a less burnt take away. It was the hatching of an idea from Nick to assist with purchase of the courts and land to alleviate the potential swallowing up by the Council à la Pirates and he would also like to know who is responsible for the lavender scented, purple soap in the men’s shower. Its aroma on returning home begs too many questions.

Rumour has it that the 9th league B side are all well and last week’s postponed match maybe played on Monday 30th.

Squash Commentary of the Week

When playing an Old Fart you must drop because he cannot get there. This is an erstwhile quote from one of the team members, no names mentioned as it was Nicked!

#1: Mark played Clarke 3-0: 10-8, 9-6, 9-4

#2: Nick played Gerald 3-0: 9-5, 9-7, 9-8

#3: George played David 0-3: 6-2, 2-9, 4-9

#4: Michael played Che 3-0: 9-1, 9-3, 9-7

Match score: 12-3

8th League v Bryanston

Good evening for Chamber 8th league. Up against Bryanston. Andy on first and he used all the old tricks to win relatively easily 3-1, although he did stumble in the third. Then on went George. He won the first 10-9 after being 7-2 down, then lost the second 1-9. Won the third 9-7, lost the fourth 7-9. George was looking tired and his unbeaten record looked vulnerable. So he was quite chuffed to take the last 9-7 (although it has to be said that his opponent was 7-2 up when George got him to pull a hammy). No comments on the scorecard and George is still unbeaten!

Then Manie went on against his squash twin. Same backhand, same style, same everything. Unfortunately Manie went down 3-0 although the game was closer than the scoreline suggests.

Then on went Duncan against a rather talkative opponent. Things were in the balance for a while, losing the second 9-4 and winning the third narrowly 10-8 and the last 9-7. Didn’t have any legs left so it was a good thing it didn’t go to the fifth.

So Chamber up 12-7.

Match result: 12-7

th League vs Wits Univ th League vs Wits Univ 7th League vs Wits Univ

Rollin' Rollin' Rollin', keep them doggies rollin' RAWHIDE!

For all you Blues Bros fans out there, the Blues Mobile was back on track last night after a brief derailment (pardon the mixed metaphors).

  • On first at No.4, non-playing captain Bullen turned on an unusually stylish performance to whip a young pretender 3-1 (Dylan, apparently no relation to Bob), having given the first game away due to severe disorientation (2 hour drive in the Blues mobile back from Sun City).
  • But the good start was soon undone, when Flip at No. 1 was given a lesson in squash by Zweli - who seemed to have legs as long as Africa and the running capacity of a Kenyan marathon runner. Despite some nice shots, Flip could only repeat the defeat of the first half and went down 1-3.
  • So it was up to the Gavins once more, and there was no disappointment. Gavin B was on first, promoted to two, and played with conviction and focus to force out a competent opponent 3-0, letting go of only 6 points in the process. Ruthless. Just how I like them doggies!
  • Gavin G was a little harder on the nerves. Having let the first game go quite easily, he struggled to win the second game, but that at least gave us the match victory. When he won the third quite easily it seemed as if his opponent had given up, but no, Gavin was in a generous mood and gave the fourth away. In the fifth he went 5-0 up, before letting his opponent back to 5-6...then there was never more than one point in it until Gavin finally finished him off on the 6th(?) match point, 10-8.

Match result 13-6 and Jake and Elwood will be performing live and in person next week at Southern Suburbs...book now.

Was that really Ron Hagger at the club last night, really playing squash? Surely my eyes deceive...no sign of Loake though?

Match result : 13-6

4th LEAGUE vs Old Eds

4th Played Old Eds’ 2nd Team in 4th league

Our second loss of the season, to a strong Eds side made up of 3rd league extras who then took the bye position in 4th.

Seems experience won on the day with the “older” players winning.

Jeff is still unbeaten in 4th (although he’s only played 3 games).

Willem lost to Dean Pike 0-3

Gary beat Wayne Platt 3-2

Trevor lost to Rob Halstead 1-3

Jeff beat Kevin Smith 3-1

Next week we play Germiston in Germiston; the only other team to beat us so far.

Match Result: 7-11
