New Membership Cards

Hi all Chamber members,

It is very sad and dis-heartening that black marks are appearing on some of the courts (Court 2 and 5 especially) and this can only be due to NON-members playing in black-soled marking shoes (I can’t believe any members would consider playing in marking shoes). We take pride in keeping the courts in good condition and the fact that cleaning of each court costs R1500 and sanding probably R4000-R5000 per court makes this a very expensive exercise when the courts are abused.

In the past we have been very relaxed as to the number of guests that members are allowed. From now on a member can bring a maximum of 2 guests to play and the member MUST be present the entire time.

This is an effort to stop the court abuse and all members must also use the on-line booking system to book courts (even in non-peak times) so that court usage can be monitored. This is not difficult.

So that Collett knows who is a member or not and who to sell tokens to, we will be issuing all members with membership cards.

We will also be changing the code for the entrance gate over the weekend as well and will let you know the new one when complete. Please do not tell non-members what the code is.

PLEASE if you see anybody playing in, what look like, marking shoes, take the members details and kick them off the court.

I know that 95% of the members are not abusing the membership but as always in life it is the last 5% ruining it for the rest.

Squash Summer Leaque 2022

With league coming to an end soon, it’s time for the Chamber Summer League again.

For those who don’t know, this is the social internal league for both guys and gals, with a few invited guests. Starting from October 4th (once a week – mainly Tuesdays) with the finals in early December.

As usual the teams consist of 6 players ranging from strong No 1’s to “not so strong” No 6’s. Playing times are semi-fixed and vary every week – one week early evening (5h30 or 6h10), one week latish (6h50 or 7h30), and every 3rd week will be doubles at about 8h10.

Send a mail to me to enter at chair@chamberexiles.co.za

If you know of any non-members who you think would enjoy, please forward this mail to them

The cost is a mere R200.  This years theme is still to be finalised. If anybody has any bright ideas please let me know.

Some Club Maintenance Updates

Just to keep you updated with ongoing maintenance at the club:

·         The floors on Courts 3,4 and 5 were scoured (not sanded) last week and are looking good.

·         Alex Palmer has cleaned the walls of all courts except 1 (which he will do sometime). Thanks Alex.

·         Courts 4 and 5 tins have been taken for sponsorship – court 3 still vacant.

·         Jeff’s handy-man, Vusi has painted the ceiling of the foyer and will carry on through the club (kitchen, bar, change-rooms etc)

·         Some of the mans shower roses have been replaced or serviced (Thanks MikeM and MikeH)

·         Mens urinal has been fixed (Thanks MikeH)

·         LED lights have been generously supplied by Raydian Power Solutions (recommended Solar Power suppliers) and will be installed soon – Thanks GeorgeP for organizing

Regards

John

Chamber at The Jock Squash Tournament - Nelspruit

What follows is the initial tournament report:

The Lowveld Master's Tournament in Nelspruit & surrounds has been around for 23 years now. But don't be fooled into assuming that we are any where near being Masters of the Art of Squash

The only qualifications of entry being that one knows which end of a racquet to point at the ball,  ability to socialise and be mildly competitve - dodgy knees come as standard -  and to be over 35 years of age.  Buying beer for The Chairman helps with the selection process.

Exceptions can be made for younger ringers who squeak in below the age group... Afterall, we need someone in the squad who remembers what running is about! Chamber Exiles historically send a huge team, and our women's brigade often ally with other Gauteng players from Modders and thus, insist on being  called Chamberfontein... it's just easier...

Teams compete from all over the country and often 1 or 2 from beyond, and I don't just mean  Fish Hoek - we only very occasionally have the need to raise a glass to our opponents!

No team wins and no team loses at the end of the weekend. It's just squash in foreign climes with friends, a disturbingly decent level of squash and the very commonly regular bloke in a skort.
