2nd LEAGUE vs Old Eds

A cold night at the Ice Chamber. First up, Willem against prima donna Paul. Willem seemed very rusty at first, and was 6-12 down in the first before he started moving fluidly, caught up and won the first. Then won the 2nd comfortably. But Paul fought back and won the next 2 to make it 2 all. (After the first game, with Paul doubled over, Toby offered R50 to any takers that the match wouldn’t go to 5.) The 5th was close and hard, got to 13 all, but Willem managed to win the next 2 points. Great win!

Next was Gary against Toby (and it was his birthday – I served out once as a birthday present). A 58 minute 3-1, with Gary the winner this time. (Jeff said he’d only play if he could wear his shorts and play Toby. He could have had his wish.)

Stan then had a run against Brad, no problem for the champ who didn’t drop a game.

Last up, Mike played Greg. Mike lost the 1st, but fought back to win the next 2. Mike narrowly lost the 4th (13-15), and then lost the 5th.

We’re still lying 2nd with 5 matches to go.

Stan: 3-0
Willem: 3-2
Mike: 2-3
Gary: 3-1

 Match result : 14 - 6

4th League vs Wits

Vevek playing at number 2 against Andreas lost the first then played well to level matters in the 2nd, ran out of legs and lost in 4 games against a very fit opponent.  Flip played Udo next at number 3 went down 2-1 before taking control of the game but losing concentration and throwing the match away in the fifth. Dave back at number 4 started casually but was too crafty for the youngster Ushir winning in 4 games against determined but somewhat frustrated opponent. Ryan played Vimal last at number 1 but made lots of mistakes and did not really get into the game, lost 3-0. All in all a reasonable competitive match against the log leaders.

Final Result

Ryan      0-3
Vevek   1-3
Flip         2-3
Dave      3-1

Match result : 6 - 13

5th League “the G Team” vs Randburg

The G-team played Randburg – a very odd team. 2 very good players at Nos 1 and 4 and 2 very weak players  at Nos 2 and 3.

BigG drew a short straw by electing (no insisting) on playing at No 4. His opponent served better than the Silver Fox at his best and when BigG did manage to return his serve it was cut off and killed masterly. At 2-0 down and half-way through the the 3rd, BigG feigned a groin injury and withdrew to the bar for solace and comfort (not given I hasten to add).

Wonder G or kpmG or G(hit) – we can’t decide on a G-name for him yet played a devastating length with power and precision to annihilate his opponent (watch out next season 2nd lge boys – this boy is going to give you a run for your money) giving him a total of 13 points in the match.

G-spot recovered from flu and a wonky hammie had no excuses in this match – except for giving his oppo 28 years advantage, and having to contend with dagga smoke filtering through the ventilation system onto the court – but did manage to win 1 very important game. Oh….. and did I mention the marker was blind!!

So the pressure was on LG for a 3-0 to win the match. That he duly did with a little wobble in the 2nd (LG objected to last weeks comments that he fell asleep). So “life was good” for LG and the team.

Match result :  9 - 6

6th B League vs Chamber A

This week saw the second round of Chamber v Chamber, this time with Chamber 'B' picking up the tab. But you know, that's fine, because 'B' klapped 'A'. Again. Bragging rights will will definitely not be shared!

1. Bruce v Gerhard - a tight game saw Bruce just pipping it 3-1.

2. Mark v Gavin - Mark suffered a smash and grab on 14-14 in the first game courtesy of a baffling let call and spineless marker, and was sufficiently confused to completely lose the plot for the rest of the match. Down 0-3. In my defense (I was the marker), I was simply respecting seniority (age) when granting Gavin the let.

3. Phil v Manie - Rustiness on both sides made for some fairly unattractive squash. 3-1 win for Phil.

4. Lyal v Louis - Inspired by two weeks farting about in the Nevada desert, Lyal played some inpsired squash to steamroll Louis 3-0.

A 12-5 drubbing for the 'A' team then! Better luck next season chaps.

Match score: 12 - 5

7th A League vs. Randburg

Match report – with nothing to report.

Received  the proverbial  5-45pm  phone call from Randburg  advising they couldn’t get a side together and that was that.

Match score: 16 - 0

7th B League vs. Edenvale

This was a bad night for Team 7B and the freezing temperatures did not help matters either.

We could only muster up 3 players due to the normal excuses of sick, lame and lazy. We tried to get players from other teams but a trip to Edenvale in freezing conditions was not appealing.

Fillmore played 1 and lost miserably 3-0.

Chapman won an entertaining match 3-1 against a strong female opponent.

Hamilton started off promising but an ugly argument with the marker finished off his zeal and he lost 3-1.He left immediately after his match but later to discover that there had been an unsuccessful attempt to steal his car with the thieves getting away with his laptop.

On this point the parking area at the club is unsafe as it is not lit and there is no guard. We recommend that Chamber Club boycotts playing matches there until Edenvale Club gives the assurances that it has taken steps to improve the situation.

Having lost the match 13-4 and with no arrangements by Edenvale for supper the last two standing, Fillmore and Chapman left and had an enjoyable supper with Teams 6A and 6B at Doppios.

Cheers.

10th LEAGUE vs Edenvale

Played at Edenvale

No1 – Brian - played lawyer Leon, who was still in recovery mode for a torn retina operation and not really of number 1 ranking so Brian had little trouble conceding only 9 points to win 3/0.
No2 – Johan – played Nick, who also is not really a number 2 but did make Johan sweat somewhat by quietly pulling back with some sneaky cross court drops but in the end Johan was too strong for him winning 15/12; 15/10 and 15/10.
No3- Des – played a new boy on the block, Steve, who was no match for a determined Des who won easily in three.
No4- John – played an old stalwart of Edenvale, Ronnie. This was the most evenly contested match of the night. John won the first game, lost the next two, took the fourth with an impressive effort but faded badly to lose the fifth.

A good win on a very cold night, dear reader.

Final result : 14 – 3

Ladies 3rd LEAGUE vs Wits

Heather won 3-1.
Audrey won 3-0.
Julie won 3-0
Fefi won 3-0 with a walkover

Overall result : 16 - 1

NELSPRUIT SENIOR MASTER WEEKEND

The intrepid Chamber Nelspruit team (Gary, Dave, Chris, John and Helena) once again travelled to the Lowveld to battle it out for HUGE prizes on offer.  To our shock and dismay, the half-way stop for a cup of tea near Machadadorp (Millie’s) had burnt down and we had to resort to the small café instead.

The captains meeting on the Friday was a complete success with Dave firmly putting his foot down stating we would NOT play in the A-section. Luckily they had no intention of putting us in the A-section so Dave sat down. There were other important issues discussed apparently but Dave couldn’t be bothered to tell the rest of his team.

Saturday morning dawned with only minor hangovers and after a hearty breakfast of toast and rusks, our first match was against the Samoosa 45’s from Witbank.

Chris playing first at 3 waltzed into a 2-0 lead only to relax in the 3rd and 4th before winning the 5th. (Nothing like a 5-setter to start off a squash weekend)
John next had an easi-ish game winning 3-1
Helena also had a comfortable 3-1 win
Dave at 2 was extremely unsporting, making his opponent look foolish with his boasts and lobs and winning 3-0. The highlight of this match was Gary and John trying to mark this match neither of them having a voice to speak of.
Gary on last with nothing to play for decided to rest his legs and lost 0-3.

Saturday afternoon saw a sterner task against Midlands.

Chris on first again, again went into a 2-0 lead, lost the 3rd and with his legs starting to wobble badly, just managed to clinch the 4th for a 3-1 win.
John on against a guy nick-named “The Gecko” for the way he climbed up the walls to play tight shots. A few scares but another 3-1 win.
Helena had no answer for her tall, well-built, hard-hitting opponent. Went down 3-0.
Match of the day was Dave against Sjors – a shot-player of note. After losing the 1st from a winning position, Dave got a strict talking to from the team and a lesson in self-belief. This worked wonders as Dave won the 2nd. However, coming off court with his racket in hand sent shivers down the team – was Dave going to concede (it’s been known to happen before!!!!!). After another team-talk and persuasive phrases such as “don’t be a woos” and “no Millers if you don’t go back on”, Dave took to the court and pulling himself towards himself, proceeded to play magnificently to win the next 2 games.
Gary on last again with nothing to play for got whipped by a 25kg overweight Mike Short. This guy will be magnificent when he’s had the baby. This was a lesson in anticipation – wherever Gary hit the ball, Mike was there to play a winner.

The day was finished off at the White River Barnyard being entertained by a band who had lost their lead singer. They were rubbish but after a few beers, who cares. Helena certainly had her dancing shoes on and it showed the next day. Or was it the Poncho's for all???

Sunday morning, what a dreary morning after such a night before. We had the Wolves as our opponents, and that they were a Northerns side who ultimately won our section.

Chris on 1st again at the old Planet Fitness. Shame. Played a Duracell bunny of note. Chris had no legs to force a win in 5. A fine effort by Chris over the weekend.

Sadly Julie’s dad passed away on Saturday, so John was not available to play. Luckily we managed another long hair to play in his place – taller and much more handsome then Gary, and younger, plus a better player, and..... Paul won 3-0.

Sorry for Helena. Opponent too tough. Comments were made by certain spectators, one of them, “this lady can play”. He’d obviously never seen the game played before.

Dave went on to throw away match point in the 4th. Helmet (sp?) would dive for Dave’s drop shots, and more often than not, get them up. After much running and diving about, Chris calling foot fault more than once, causing much consternation, Dave then threw away 3 match points in the 5th. Even served out on one of them. Dave then mumbled to his team something about regretting not having stayed in the gents after the 4th, which was totally ignored by all.

Gary went on last again, just wanting to win one match and raised his head to the squash gods. And they answered him. Gary played his best match of the weekend to win a hard running match in 5.

Then off to lunch and prize giving at the News Café. We were pipped into 3rd place by Midlands, who we actually beat on the Saturday afternoon. Red wine as a prize for all. Helena and Julia (Gauteng side) were given an extra gift for playing in the mens sections. Some sort of anti-aging cream, maybe hair remover!!!

And so we went home exhausted.

Other Chamber players who played were Jeff playing for the victorious Gauteng A team, Julie playing for the Ladies Gauteng B and “traitor Gerhard” playing for Old Eds.

2nd LEAGUE vs Wits

We played the first game after the break against Wits, who phoned late and said they only have 3 players.
Willem played Tagara, but wasn’t in the game and lost in 3.
Jeff played Michael, managed to win a game, but was always the underdog.
Gary played Jacek, was 2-0 down and managed to come back to 2 all, but couldn’t keep the same pressure for the 5th and lost.

We’re still lying 2nd but won’t keep this position if we don’t win.

1)      Willem: 0-3
2)      Jeff: 1-3
3)      Gary: 2-3
4)      Ryan: 3-0 (walk over)

 Match result : 6 - 12

4th League vs Parkview

Chris playing at number 3 got on first against Baron, after losing the 1st game got into his stride and played well to take the next 3 games. Vevek still recovering from flu (not an excuse) played Andrew at number 4, threw away two match points losing in 5, poor performance in a match he should have won easily. Flip played Gordon at number 2, lost in 4 games, led to 12 points in two of the other games but could not finish. Dave playing at number 1 for the first time played well in patches, but his opponent Darryl too young and fit, lost 3-0. Team stayed for supper and a drinks at Country Club with little to celebrate.

Final Result

Dave      0-3
Flip         1-3
Chris      3-1
Vevek   2-3

5th League “the G Team” vs Dainfern

Having been beaten by Dainfern in the 1st round, revenge was on the cards.

Our new member Andrew (got to think of a “G” name for him) went on first at No 3 against Lucy who had beaten FurG in the 1st round. Andrew won convincingly 3-0, not letting Lucy see much of the ball.

G-string on next, finding some semblance of form, won a hard fought 3-2

Tactics saw LG playing at 2 to let the Silver Fox play a youngster. He won comfortably 3-1 – falling asleep to lose the 2nd.

With the match in the bag, G-spot started off like the Silver Fox of old, lobbing dropping and outwitting his young opponent and quickly won the first 2 games. But the youngster started reading the game and came back to 2-all and won a close fifth ( a bit of a cold and a tender hammie were my only excuses – of course if I’d needed to win, I would have!!!!!!!)

Match result : 14 - 6

6th League A vs Modderfontein

Gerhard took this one in 5 despite looking at no more than 80% of his obvious talent, 3-2.

Gavin was always in control and beat Sean 3-1.

Stuart beat a cripple Ishmal 3-0.

Louis continued his leaque form with a 3-1 drubbing of Piet.

Match result : 16 - 4

6th B League vs Old Eds

Second half began with a gurgle for 6'B' (which sits above 6'A' in the standings if you must know).

We played top of the log Old Eds A, whom we beat narrowly 8-7 at home during the first half. This time welost narrowly 7-8, thanks to yours truly not picking up a game despite being way ahead twice. Many thanks to BigG for filling in at 1, and winning (just) against frog-in-the-blender, 20-a-day, nearing-retirement-age Mr. Manton.

7th A League vs. Wits

The pipes of peace had sounded and a cease fire was observed. The long cold winter of our discontent was endured. But now, the call to arms has again been sounded and unto the breach once more we must go…if only this tale had a happy ending and not this one of woe.

No: 2 – I headed up the battle against foul-mouthed Roy and things looked promising for the first few points and then the rot started to set in. Failing to find a good length and anything assimilating a tight shot I resorted to the short game and running Roy was up to the challenge. Lost the first, pipped to the post in the second I managed to salvage some pride in the third but was pipped again in the forth. Not a great start to the return-leg season and still with the loosing streak monkey firmly clinging to my back - not even Chicken Licken can shake off! (1-3) 10-15 14-16 17-15 13-15

No: 3 – Karel steps up to the plate against the sweet-hitting silent Sanjay and Karel is so tentative with his shots (completely out of character) that he tins most of his drops and boasts. His inability to hit the ball with any intent fails to put his opponent under any pressure and quite the opposite happens - when a disputed point between player and marker sees Karel loose his rag and in the subsequent point the unfortunate Sanjay bares the brunt of a shot that should have been held. Karel manages to find some composure in the third and then loses a hard fought game in the forth. (1-3) 11-15 13-15 15-9 14-16

No: 4 – Two-nil down and things look bleak until Michael, dressed in his “Father Christmas” red tracksuit takes to the stage against Jaycee and the highlight game of the evening ensued. Michael showing-off his full repertoire of shots; drives – lobs – drops and a host of sneaky cross your body thingies made for an entertaining game to watch and mark. Problem was that Jaycee was a pretty good match to Michael’s repertoire and fetched and retrieved and caught Michael short on his legs and not seeing a good many boasts. Same pattern for the evening as Michael salvaged pride in the third but then frustratingly succumbed in the fourth. (1-3) 9-15 10-15 15-11 14-16

No: 1 – Papa (the Greek) back from a long injury lay-off playing the “never met him before” Mark (soon to be married to a Greek)! Nic starts well and was probably the only team member to find a decent length – played a good and close fought first game but then fell apart in the second without much of a fight and George thought that he was going to see his first ever 15 zip game and was almost disappointed when Nic pulled back a few points. The third saw some fight but in the end it seemed like the mountain was just too hard to climb and Mark was a pretty tidy player! Not a good season for Nic thus far or maybe the monkey just likes us continental types!? (0-3) 13-15 4-15 13-15

Not the result we wanted at all. Although we are no contenders on the log, we do, however, have to keep our “B” team in their place below us on the log or suffer a fate worse than death – becoming the A “B team”.

The only positive news to report on the evening is that Steph played his first “match practice” match against George and thumped him. Well done and welcome back Steph – this after trying to spatchcock his finger with a circular saw.

A good hearty get together was had at Gino’s made all the heartier – YES HEARTIER – by whispering George and the play of the day must go to Michael for his passing line to the waitress who, to her credit, smiled brightly while taking his comment in her stride. Don’t worry Gerda, Michael was far too young for her anyway and her boobs weren’t as good as Michaels Savanna Dry thought they were!!!

Thanks to the good-spirited Wits team and just to confirm whether we can negotiate double the BEE scorecard points when we play (and loose to) the mighty Charos?

7th B League vs. UJ

We got whupped……..finished and klaar…………Oh………
I believe that Graham Vermaak (GV), Pete le Roux and Dave Hamilton have given their racquets away, chucked out everything and anything else to do with squash and have taken up trying to improving their marriages……….not a bad idea………….
Should you be thinking that maybe in a years time you would like to make a come back……….I believe Poffadder 9th’s are looking for some players

Lets take a look at the results……….

GV managed 28 points in a 0 – 3 whitewash
Pete le Roux managed even less in a 0 – 3 whitwash
Dave Hamilton could and should have taken a game……….but didn’t and got a hiding 0 – 3
So that leaves the “Sports reporter”……..wait for it……….DISHED OUT A HIDING OF NOTE 3 – 0 and only gave away 23 points………thank you very much.

Cheers

2nd LEAGUE vs JCC

First game of the 2nd half was a home game to CCJ. Almost the same side as the first half, with Jeff sitting out for Willem this time.
Stan postponed his game as he’s playing a tournament in Pretoria (as is their number 1).
Gary played first against Arthur, was 2-0 up but Arthur fought back, won the 3rd and the 4th was close with Gary just sneaking in.
Mike played next against one of their 2 Mikes, games were close but Mike Baldwin was in control throughout.
Willem played last against Alan who was no gentleman on the court. Willem was 2-0 up when Alan started turning and hitting the ball on Willem’s serve which resulted in Willem running out the way and Alan winning the point. So he kept doing it. Willem came off the court to discuss it with the marker and the marker (Arthur) gave the game against Willem for leaving the court. Willem lost the 4th but managed to hold it together and won the 5th comfortably.

1)      Stan – postponed
2)      Mike 3-0
3)      Willem 3-2
4)      Gary 3-1

Result: Could be a 16 if Stan wins again (and he did win – by default)

 Match result : 16 - 3

4th League vs Parkview

Vevek went on first against Hano suffering from a bad bout of flu and his performance reflected it, did not offer his opponent much resistance, lost 3-0 serving out 7 times (if not more) in the process.
Ryan went on next against a very competitive and fit young Nicola, played well to level the match at 2-2, but then gave it away in the 5th with lots of unforced errors.
Dave playing at number 2 for the first time this season continued his good form winning 3-1 against Ronald.
Flip who was just recovering from flu lost the first two games and then staged a great come back to win against Colin who hasn't lost a match yet this season.

1.       Ryan v Nicola (lost 2-3)
2.       Dave v Ronald (won 3-1)
3.       Flip v Colin (won 3-2)
4.       Vevek v Hano (lost 0-3)

Hi Rats Squashers,

  1. “Giant Killers”

Big effort last night from the men of Rats 5th league to topple the previously high flying nerds from Chamber.  All matches went to 5, with the Fat Boy and yours truly both coming from 2 sets down in the final two rubbers to clinch a cliff hanger.  Big thing to come for the second half of the season!!

  1. Ginge Breaks Record!

Ginge broke his own long standing record last night for the most times the F-Word expletive has been shouted during a Gauteng Squash match.  He surpassed his previous best of 143 F-Words with a new benchmark of 168.  Ginge has vowed to push on and aim to be the first league player to break the magical 200 barrier.

His effort last night included a staggering 62 F-Words in the final game alone, as well as an impressive match high 35 F-Words used in conjunction with the C-Word, and coupled with his 7 racquet throws made for a truly stand out performance.

  1. Don’t Mess with Buck

A bloodied Ant “Buck” Illings rocked up for a quiet beer last night on his rest night from playing.  Ant had apparently head-butted a fellow motorist in a violent bout of road rage after a night out with Big Ron during the week.  By the look a Ant’s still bloodied and battle scarred head, it was much more than a head-butt, and as yet the bashed in front of his car is still an unexplained mystery.  I guess every club has one (although with Ginge we have at least two in our team!)

  1. Ginge Stoops to a New Low

Imagine my surprise when I got out of the shower to find Ginge struggling to try and put on my jeans.  Battling to button up (because he has a fatter arse than me) Ginge was quickly trying to put on my jeans and duck to the pub before being caught.  It seems that his jeans were either misplaced or stolen and he was desperate to make another plan and not have to walk around in his underods for the rest of the night.  Big Ron you have been fingered as the likely thief of Ginge’s jeans from the change rooms so if I were you I would brace myself for a few nasty surprises next time you play. Stay tuned.....

  1. Earl Rose Award

The Earl Rose award for the worst player of the evening therefore goes to the thief who stole Ginge’s Jeans

  1. Stu Dickinson Award

The Stu Dickinson Award for worst ref go’s to........Ginge. And he didn’t even mark a game!!!

  1. Story of the evening

Golf with Mikey Schultz (from Ginge of course)

Thanks to John and the lads from Chamber.  It is always a good evening.

Have fun guys and next game only in August

6th League A vs Wanderers

Bad day on the courts
Louis on first and never seemed to get in the game was down 2 and then managed to steal one but lost the 4th so 1-3
Gerhard went on next and also struggled somewhat - same picture down 2 came back for 1 and narrowly lost the 4th  so 1-3
Gavin on next and got thumped 0-3. Iit was one of those games if he did manage to get a good shot in, it would be returned into the nick
Fergus on to restore some pride or so we thought. Before he opened his eyes he was 2 down – he then switched to masters mode as he was playing a youngster and took the next 3 games (great running and never giving up) 3-2
 5 points for the night

Match result : 5 - 14

6th B League vs Bryanston

Busy courts and relegated from the glass back of court 1 to the bar-side comfort of court 4. Up against Bryanston who has given us a bit of a drubbing in the first round. Enter the underdog.

At 1: Mark v Nick: Great game to watch, complete see-saw ding donger. The younger Nick eventually just pipping Mark 3-2.

At 4: Lyal v Ian: Another fantastic running match, with Lyal performing some acrobatics to stay in some of the rallies.
Every game except the last going down to the wire. Lyal came back Rafa-style to take the two games he won, including the fourth, which gave reason to shout and cheer and generally be excited. But then he lost the fifth and went down 3-2 (16-14; 13-15; 14-16; 16-14; 7-15). Two great games so far, but Chambers yet again on the wrong end of 5-setters.

At 2: Phil v John: An undercooked opponent with a replacement racket seemed a little out of sorts, and Phil managed a 3-0 win. Game on.

At 3: Bruce (post Comrades) v Brad: Bruce's 100km-older legs took a few rallies to get going, but once they did he proved too strong for his opponent, winning comfortably 3-0 in the end.

So, a good end to a loooong night of squash. The only downer was the barney developing on court 1, which stole some of our loyal support.

7th A League vs. Winchester Hills

What a champ, 10.51 Comrades and 6 wins out of 6 matches. Guess who?

The Winchester boys arrived complete with their social skills pack. Gary was up first and lost the first. “Ear Ear” played well but did not get “there there” and lost the next two.

On goes George after being let down at the last minute by Karel, shame on him, and eased away to a 2 nil lead. He wanted to make quick work as he was due to attend the “Aches and Pains” party at his Florida running club. Sadly he dozed in the third, woke up in the fourth, had match point, blew it and had to play a fifth and did not Grant (excuse the pun!) his opponent 5 points. One match all and looking good.

Paul, hoping to boost his 14.29% winning record, gamely took on their number one. Lost the first two but came back in the third, could not keep the momentum going despite some valiant body-wrenching dives, and lost 3-1.

Last but not least, Mike, eager to salvage some pride for the team takes on Pule who drilled him 3 egg in the first round. Revenge was on the cards. Good start with Mike winning the first game, next two were lost and the fourth was won easily to 3. Yes 3! False sense of security prevailed and Mike lost the fifth to 12.

The team lost to the better team (sports wise) on the night and like ghosts in the night the Winchester okes had voomed. Dopi Zero beckoned for the three musketeers which was the same number as our 2nd league side whose opponents also did not pitch for some reason that Willem and Gary was sharing with us!

Yes you guessed right, the “who” is George. Well done for the Comrades and he will have to decide, Chamber or Florida!
