With both our regular Captains out of town we the workers are not paid to think. We pitch up only and play and then drink!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Herewith results for last weeks game 11th League played Suburbs. We were a tad lucky as all 4 there members were playing only their 2nd League match and hence we were able to BULLY them a bit with all the results and yes even John’s going our way. Johan playing his first game for the A Team also won 3-0 and I believe that was his first win in a year. Johan welcome to a winning team.

10th LEAGUE vs Wits

After a good 13-3 win in week 1, the 10 th league was motivated to keep the good form going against WITS at home.

Motivation died a bit as 19:00 came closer and no signs of our opponents! A quick squiz at court 2 and a bit of maths showed more than 8 players so I (Mario) walzed over and casually asked if there might be any 10th leagers and to my surprise there were 2 10th leagers enjoying the good exhibition being displayed by the 8th or 9th league.

Their no. 1 and 4 players were not there as yet so Nushrah went on 1st at no.3 - WITS were quick out of the blocks and lead the 1st set 8-1 when Nusrah all of a sudden hit more wall than tin and simply destroyed his opponent 3-0 and pretty much set the scene for the remainder of the night. I, playing 4, followed this up with a quick fire 3-0 only giving away 6 points in the process (One where I drove the ball straight back at myself after changing my mind from the drop shot).

Gabrielle asked to be demoted to play at 2 due to an apparent injury - his opponent is still wondering about it as well as the opponent found himself doing all the running and quickly running out of steam to loose convincingly and another 3-0 victory to Chambers.

Last up was Doran being moved up to play 1 - Doran showed that he is a pretty decent player and seldom found one foot of the T as he dominated - well this should go quickly as Doran moved 2-0 ahead. In the 3rd there were some serious signs of the lack of fitness and Doran stared at a 11-14 deficit - There was no ways that he would be able to make a 4th or 5th so he pulled out some moves that would have made the Silver Fox proud he slowed the game down with some nasty lobs and boasts frustrating his opponent to no end and eventually taking the 3rd 17-15.

So a great start to the season with a 16-0 win in week 2!

The only embarrassment of the evening was when I found Nusrah and Doran giving their opponents some real squash lessons even doing some drills with them afterwards, hope this does not come back to bite us in the return leg - A definite COTY nomination if we end up loosing the return league!

Final result :16-0

8th league “B” vs. Pirates

Chambers 8B played Pirates at home on Wed 17 March:

First up at No 4 was Chris van Zyl. He played Max, the wily old Pirates campaigner. A good performance by Chris in only his second league game. He was always in control of the game and quickly rapped it up 3-0.

Next on was Pete le Roux at No 2, against Andrew, who apologised about the outcome before the game started- “I really haven’t been playing much…” sounded like a Nic Papa comment, but proved to be correct and an easy 3-0 win for Peter.

Digby on at No 3, against a so-called “runner”, but his running didn’t do him any good, the trick is that you have to also hit the ball. Digby rapped it up 3-0 and was disgusted at the weak opposition.

Graham at No 1 probably had the best game of all, but his opponent seemed more concerned about keeping his pants on and in the end it was a comfortable win for Graham.

Unfortunately not the strongest opposition, which took at little away from the satisfaction of a 16-0 overall win. I think the Pirates team also felt a bit disgraced and declined our dinner invitation. So it was dinner for ONE (team) at Doppio’s, joined by team mates Pete Fillmore and Dave Hamilton, who came to support and had a game of their own.

Match result : 16 - 0

8th League “A” vs. Wits

So it was that I arrived early at Wits, thinking that maybe they would not have a team, it being vacation/study break time. Only to find their entire team (plus reserve) there already and new boy Gary warming up. None of these guys are students or staff, they are an old Wits Park team, who now just happen to play for Wits U. By the time Captain (Whispering) George arrived we had exhausted the possible permutations of playing positions and were confused. So new boy Gary was voted 2, George could only drop to 3 after playing 1 last week, Lyal insisted on 4, which left 1 … damn. All my efforts and insistence that I should be 3 or 4 thwarted.

Gary played wily Roy (the only opponent’s name I can remember). Roy plays some really mean boasts, which Gary consistently managed to pick up much to Roy’s surprise. However Roy had a few more tricks up his sleeve and it ended badly for Gary. Lyal played at the same time and was just too quick, powerful and consistent for his opponent. Another easy win for Lyal.

George played at the same time as me and ended up with the same score line. Both of us went down in flames.

The formalities over, the restaurant wrangle ensued. “We go to Gino’s in Robertsham” said our host captain. “ No @#$%$$ way!” said George. Too far to travel says the man who goes to London, Cape Town and Durban to run marathons. So after about 6 minutes of travel to the near South, Gary and I ended up having a very sociable dinner with our hosts, while George and Lyal went to some place 5 minutes away in Melville. I bet their bill came to more than Gino’s modest R290 (for 5 of us!).
