Ruling on PAR Scoring in South Africa

2nd February 2009

To all provincial Chairpersons: players.

PAR SCORING

The WSF, which is focusing on the Olympic Bid, decided that as from 1st April 2009 all World Championships will be played on the PAR Scoring.

PSA and WISPA already use the scoring system.

They did however suggest that : PAR to 11 scoring be used for all National and Regional events : that PAR to 15 or HiHo (the present scoring system – hand in hand out) be alternatives.

The European Squash Association will use PAR to 11 scoring across the board.

Canada, New Zealand, Australia have proposed that all national and regional events be PAR to 11.

At the Convention held in Johannesburg in November 2008 it was agreed that :

National, Provincial Open events should be played with PAR Scoring . S A Schools had adopted PAR scoring as from 1st January 2009 with the length of matches being carefully monitored and any necessary adaptations made.

A panel of players agreed to adjudicate the system after some consultation.

At a National Coaching and Refereeing Workshop hosted at the offices of Squash South Africa from 23-25 January 2009 attended by representatives from 12 provinces and 5 Associate Bodies, the following was unanimously proposed and has been accepted by the panel (3-1) which was formed at the Convention in November 2008.

PAR 11 to be used for : Jarvis /Kaplan Cup All sections

SACD All sections

National Championships

A sections of Provincial Open/Closed Championships

A sections of Grand Prix/Satellite events

Men’s and Women’s First league in major provinces

PAR 15 to be used for : All Lower sections of Provincial Open/ Grand Prix/ Satellite events

For 2nd and lower men’s and women’s league PAR 15 .

Junior Championships PAR to be used throughout with the under 14’s, 16’s ,19’s playing to 11.

Masters will consult and revert to Squash South Africa as to what they recommend. It was proposed that the A sections play PAR to 11. Other sections PAR to 15. A reminder that at 10 all or 14 all the winner will be the player who goes clear by two points.

It was felt that:

2 systems would confuse both the players and the spectators.

By using either PAR to 11 or Par to 15 it is the same system – earn a point whether serving or not.

Competitive play should be PAR while the recreational player can use the system they prefer.

A number of juniors play senior league so there must be uniformity.

The match time is already showing signs of increase as the players get used to the PAR system.

Every point is now important so the level of the standard of play could improve.

It is an experimental period world wide.

It is proposed that all provinces adopt the proposal and implement as soon as possible as a number are already starting league.

Provinces are requested to provide Squash South Africa with regular feedback on the questionaires which will be sent out.

2008 Chamber Exiles Summer League - Some Pictures.

I have been a bit slack in posting the pictures to the website, and after a quiet chat with the chairman, I understood the urgency, so here we go.

Here are some pics of the Summer League Tournament we had a while ago, and reported on in a previous blog posting :

And here are some of the other hooligans.

2009 CHAMBER SQUASH CLUB HANDICAP TOURNAMENT RULES

HANDICAP TOURNAMENT RULES

The rules of this tournament are simple - if you understand them - similar to cricket rules i.e. one team goes in and the other goes out and when the team that is in is out then the other team goes in etc.

The winner is the person that drinks most during the tournament.

1. Best of 5 games

2. The STRONGER player must win the match within 40 minutes, with the exception of those listed below whose time limit is either 35 or 30 minutes. If the match has not been completed within these time limits then the weaker player wins the match no matter what the score is.

Strong Weak -13A 0A -5 0 +6

3 If players with the same handicap play against one another there is no time limit.

4. If two AMERICAN handicaps play against one another the American part of the handicap is cancelled and the handicaps subtracted so that the lower handicap player starts off zero.

5. If an American handicap plays against a straight handicap NO ADJUSTMENT IS MADE.

6. If two STRAIGHT handicaps play against one another the handicap is subtracted so that the lower handicap player starts off zero.

7. Under no circumstance does a PLUS handicap change.

8. Handicaps may be adjusted up to and including the second round (on the remote possibility that the dis- organiser has made an error).

9. It is wise to phone your opponent before the match to confirm he has the correct time, day, year and century.

10. If you don’t understand the rules – ASK THE TOURNAMENT REF

11. LAST RULE - DEFINITELY NO POOFTERS.

SPECIAL TIME LIMITS:

35 MINS - Men with +1, +2 and +3 handicaps
30 MINS - All Ladies

Final Results... SNAKES ALIVE

And so..................that was that for another year.

For those who weren't at the prizegiving yesterday, the sad news is that the "popular" Sidewinders were pipped at the post, not by one team but by 3 teams.

Well done to the Black Mambas
who slithered thr
ough at the death to beat the Vipers into 2nd place by 1 point and the Anacondas by 2 points.

Hope everybody enjoyed it, there were some great matches over the Summer League and culminated in a marathon doubles match yesterday between Gary and Paul vs George and Manie. Gary and Paul eventually winning 17-16 in the 5th.

Joanne Giles got the best record award and Chris van Zyl the worst record award.

Sportsman
of the year was awarded to George Palmer for his efforts at putting the club on the map by developing and maintaining the clubs web-site.

Keith Arnott got the COTY award for not only wearing the brightest kit on court yesterday but also for packing his racket away (and the ball) when 2-1 down in a doubles match. He had to be dragged back on court by his partner to finish the match - was a beer calling Keith?.

Watch the web-site over the next few days for the photos.

Thanks to everybody for playing - see you next year for the Handicap Tournament.
