8th league “B” vs. Edenvale

First on was Peter le Roux (first and only person ready to play at 6.30pm) playing at No 2. Three close games, but superior skill, patience and better execution of his game plan, eventually led to a convincing 3-0 win.

Next on was Digby Chapman, fat and bloated following a decadent weekend in Phalaborwa, playing at No 3. His opponent looked like he should have been on the catwalk in Milan, well groomed in a fancy outfit (nothing like our chamber kit). No match for Digby who cruised into a 2-0 lead. After taking a breather in the third, he took a deep breath and cleaned up in the fourth, for a 3-1 win.

Gavin Martin at No 4 had no problem getting around his opponent, although he also seemed to be suffering from the after effects of the long weekend and was not as sharp as he usually is, but a comfortable 3-0 win.

Graham Vermaak arrived without his squash kit (these things happen when you’re in love), had to go home to fetch it and just arrived in time for his game. Playing at No 1, he did not have the best start. After being thumped in the first game, he complained that he had not warmed up properly. The marker reluctantly game him a few extra minutes to knock up before the start of the 2nd game. He went on to win games 2 and 3 and it was looking like a clean sweep for the team. Then things started going horribly wrong for the poor man, he started complaining about his opponent barging into him and not allowing him to play his shots, lost the plot and the next two games, going down 2-3. His opponent (the barman) allegedly played for the 7th league the night before, and was just helping out in the 8th. In mitigation, he did have two or three beers before the game to try and even out things, but this clearly had the opposite effect.

Final score 14-4

We then proceeded to enjoy a leisurely dinner at a local Italian restaurant, which rounded off a good evening.
